Nikon D90 replacement may have 100% viewfinder coverage and dual memory card slots

The Nikon D90 replacement may have a 100% viewfinder coverage and dual memory card slots. FYI: the current Nikon D90 has 96% coverage and the D300s has 100% coverage. No idea if the dual memory card slots will be SD+CF, like the D300s, or only SD. I cannot give any rating for this rumor, since I found it online  – it was indirectly mentioned on a website by one of the people I have been following for a while.

This is a good news for all DX users. If the new D90 gets better specs than the D300s (and so far that appears to be the case), I would be very curious to see what the D300s replacement will look like when it comes out next year.

Weekly Nikon related news/links #72

  • In case you didn’t know: Nikon has been using Phase One cameras to take some of their press images for a while. Some of the Nikon D3100 press shots were taken with a… Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III (see here, here and here). My only explanation is that those photographs were taken by the PR agency:

  • Digitalrev and other websites are actively spreading rumors about a Nikon D800 camera. I hope this time they have a better source than last year when they wrote about a D750 and a D400. You should know my thoughts on this by now – do I think a D700 replacement will be announced soon: YES, do I have any reliable information to backup me up: NO.
  • Another NikonD3100 introduction video after the break:

Nikon now producing their own sensors?

The new 14.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor in the Nikon D3100 could be produced by Nikon

Thom Hogan has an update on his Nikon D3100 post indicating that based on one of his sources, Nikon has indeed started to produce their own sensors. I already mentioned a quote from Nikon’s website that the new 14.2MP DX-format CMOS image sensor from the Nikon D3100 is “developed by Nikon”, although from the press release it is not clear if it was also produced by Nikon. The whole sensor fiasco started  few weeks ago when rumors started to float around that Sony will stop producing full frame sensors, which could put Nikon in a difficult position.

Q&A session with Nikon Denmark: 16MP Nikon D90 replacement before Photokina, no other DSLR

This is the transcript of Nikon’s press conference in Denmark. After the event, there was a Q&A session and here are some of the interesting Answers from Nikon Denmark:

“10:02
Svend Erik says that Nikon was out of the crisis in six months
10:02
since the first April, sales exploded and there are now problems getting products to stores …

10:08 [Comment from Soren Reinke:]
When will the release a camera like the D300/D700 class, that can record Full HD video?
10:09
@ Soren: I think we will see at least one more launch before Photokina. But the question is whether it is a new D300 or D700. I doubt it. I think the D90 stands for replacement within.

10:14 [Comment from Poul:]
Which sensor sits in (referring to the new D3100)
10:14
@ Paul: A 14-megapixel APS-C sensor. I think that it is a Sony sensor

10:21 [Comment by nicholas:]
will be the successor to the D90 use the same sensor?
10:21
@ Nicolas: it’s hard to say. But muligeden there. But one could also imagine 16 megapixels

Recap

First, a note: the comments are going out of control again. Unreasonable Nikon bashing will not be tolerated. Comments like “Nikon sucks” or “I am switching to Canon” do not bring any value to the discussion. Please use common sense and show your arguments in a logical way.

The new products from Nikon are now covered all over the Web. Here are some more quick links (some of them from our own readers):

  • Quote: “The D3100 is equipped with a new Nikon DX-format CMOS image sensor and a new image-processing engine, EXPEED 2, both developed by Nikon” (source).
  • Engadget has a hands-on with the D3100. Check also Bob Krist’s blog – he has posted some samples photos from the new 28-300 lens.

Sample video taken with the D3100 and various Nikon lenses after the break:

Capture NX 2.2.5 should be coming soon

The sample images provided for the Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4G lens were processed with Capture NX 2.2.5. The last official version of Capture NX was 2.2.4. Now you know what’s coming. I guess Capture NX 3 will take some more time.

Some last minute Nikon D3100 updates

I got some info about the mystery switch on the Nikon D3100 – the body has two new controls:

  • To the right of the mode dial is a sliding switch which arcs around it (similar to the Panasonic G1, GH1, G2).  This selects drive modes between Single, Continuous, Self-timer and Quiet (which holds the mirror up until you let go of the shutter release after a shot).
  • Above the multi-selector on the back and a bit further to the left towards the screen is a lever to activate live view, and inside the pivot point of the lever is a red button to start video recording.

And some more video details:

  • Video options: 1080 24 fps, 720 30/25/24 fps, and 640×424 24 fps.
  • The D3100 video is H.264, with 16 bit 24 KHz audio, in a .MOV container.  The 24 fps is actually a proper 23.976 fps that video professionals expect.
  • AVCHD video codec : the D3100 just stores a single .MOV file for each movie in the same directory as your still photos, so it is technically not AVCHD, but it uses the same technology.
