Spike in DSLR camera shipments in April

CIPA DSLR vs mirrorless camera shipments
Last week Sony published an entire press release describing how successful their mirrorless offering is. There is no doubt that Sony has done a lot in a short period of time, but this is mainly because (I think) they remained unchallenged by the major players (Nikon and Canon). CIPA published their data for April and it seems that DSLR camera shipments actually had a significant jump in April. DSLR sales are falling down – we all know that, but mirrorless cameras shipments appear to be generally flat since 2013 and mirrorless still represents only a fraction of the DSLR market. It will be interesting to see how the dynamic will change when/if Nikon announces their own full frame mirrorless camera.

Here is the breakdown of camera shipments by region – DSLR sales still dominate the US and EU market:

The D810A could be the best low light/high ISO DSLR camera Nikon has ever made *UPDATED*

Nikon D810a DSLR camera for astrophotography 1
I received this from a reader – two striking findings about the Nikon D810A camera:

1) It *IS* appropriate for general use photography, indoors or outdoors.  There is not an obvious color cast, at least not one that is as pronounced as the coloration differences that occur when you change from say a Zeiss lens to a Sigma or Nikon lens.

2) This might be the best low-light/high ISO DSLR Nikon has ever made – see the attached screenshots and linked RAW files comparing the D810A with the D810 (both taken with the Sigma 50/1.4 Art @ 1/200, f/2.8, 9000 ISO):

Update: sorry, one of the photos was taken with NR on which could explain the difference in ISO performance.

Update on the secret Nikon iOS project

apple-logo Nikon-logo
Few weeks ago I reported that iOS engineers were working on a new secret project with Nikon USA at the main Apple campus in Cupertino. Here is an update: there will be a new iOS app (I presume from Nikon) that will add special/new camera features through Wi-Fi. For example, you will be able to purchase new features (filters?) from the app and they will be added individually to compatible cameras based on an upcoming firmware build. Not sure if this will be for the Coolpix line or it will include also DSLR models.
