Nikon 1 J5 mirrorless camera ($496.95) review by Eyal Gurevitch:

First came the J4

Last summer I spent a great, long vacation with my family at the beach. The kids love doing nothing else than going swimming twice a day in the sea and spending the rest of it in the pool. I had the Nikon 1 J4 with me on that trip. Rarely do I have so much time to spend with a camera (Hey, but what about the kids?) so I studied it closely and learned to love it. And hate it.

“Flash back to 20 years ago, when photography was just entering the digital realm. This episode of CNET Central from the summer of 1995 features the “B-2 Stealth Bomber” of digital cameras, a Fuji X/Nikon hybrid. Roughly the size of a volleyball, this camera packed 1.3 megapixels and a removable 131 MB card capable of storing 70 images, all for $20,000 or (equivalent to $31,000 in 2015).”

I received some additional information on the Nikon free maintenance service initiative: the emails were sent to about 4,300 D800/D800E owners, as well as to aprox. 100 D700 owners and around 100 D7100 owners. Unfortunately, if you did not receive an email, you will not be eligible for this offer. This service will not be offered to everyone. To make sure you don’t miss on any similar offers in the future, make sure your camera is registered with Nikon.

Update: for now the Nikon free maintenance service initiative is available only in the US:

A reader received the “free maintenance service initiative” email for his Nikon D700 camera. It seems that this program is not targeted for D800 cameras only and indeed is just a good gesture from Nikon to existing customers.

Is the new D800 “free maintenance service initiative” just another Nikon recall?

Today Nikon sent out letters to selected D800 camera owners to participate in a free “Nikon Maintenance Service Initiative”. I am not sure if this is just another phrase for a recall or Nikon simply wants to test a large number of D800 units in order to determine if a certain issue is present. My guess is that this has to do with the D800 left focus issue. This offer is valid till 1/15/2016.

Coincidentally, refurbished Nikon D800 cameras reached a new low price today: $1,649.00.

Update: similar emails were also sent to D700 camera owners.

Here is the full text of the email:
