Eyewitness report: Nikon D80 – warehouse out of stock

From someone that works in a major US authorized dealer:

“Our warehouse is totally out of D80’s, which hasn’t happened for a very, very long time. Take that as you will.”

I take that and the previous post as a clear indication the Nikon D90 is coming soon (they may also call it Nikon D80x, but I doubt that).

Nikon rep to a major US Nikon authorized dealer: Nikon D40 gone by Christmas; Nikon D80 should be sold ASAP, replacement coming

A reader who works for a major US Nikon authorized dealer reported on a recent meeting with Nikon reps:
“When asked about the future of the D40, he said we ‘may have a few left’ by Christmas time but that it would remain current until the end of the year. The basic message was that the D60 would move toward being the new entry-level DSLR and that its price point would lower to reflect that Kind of like then the D40x was being discounted so heavily that at times it was the same price as the D40, causing the lesser model to become a silly choice. As far as price point goes, a few numbers were tossed around, anywhere from $300-$400, the latter possible indicating Black Friday-type sales.
Another associate beat me to the punch by asking about a D80 replacement. The official response was that a replacement was definitely coming, and that we should sell our D80’s in stock ASAP. When pressed for a more definite time frame, he indicated that if he told us how soon it would be, we would have serious problems with left over 80’s. Evidently the 80 is as cheap as it is going to get, and the D90 will come in at the original price point, probably a little over $1k at launch, but within a few months come down to the $900 range
Another odd thing was how much the 16-85 was downplayed. much like the 18-55 VR originally was. In the past, they have done this when a kit lens is released before the body it will be paired with, and typical Nikon glass shortages might cause orphan bodies to sit on store shelves. I’ve seen grumblings that the 16-85 is too expensive to be used as a kit lens, but I can only point out that the pricier 18-200 is already being used as such with the D200 and D300, and that the $400 18-135 is being offered in a D80 kit for only $200 above the body price.”
fyi: here is the current pricing for D300 (just dropped $50), D80 and D40 on Amazon (prices are dynamically updated):

Nikon comments on the D700 leak – they confirm the rumor!

This is from CNET Asia:

“As usual, we were told no comments for now, but that Nikon “will say more when the date draws near”. The spokesperson did volunteer that the pictures were taken at the agency where the brochures were printed.”
What? They admitted it!

Plausible prediction of Nikon announcements

DSLRGossip has a very plausible prediction of Nikon announcements (I am still a bit disappointed on the lenses selection):
The rumor is that Nikon is going to announce 5 new products on July 1, 2008. Of the 3 products are sure to be announced. The rest 2 are not clear. Here are some possibilities:
For sure these will be announced on July 1, 2008:
1. Nikon D700 FX – a 12.1 megapixel full-frame based on Nikon D300 body
2. Nikon 45mm f/2.8D PC-E ED
3. Nikon 85mm f/2.8D PC-E Micro ED
Option 1
4. Nikon D90 – 12 megapixel DX replacement for Nikon D80
5. SB-900 speedlight
Option 2
4. SB-900 speedlight
5. Nikon 200mm f/4 Micro AF-S VR Nano
Option 3
4. Nikon D90 – 12 megapixel DX replacement for Nikon D80
5. Nikon 200mm f/4 Micro AF-S VR Nano
The much anticipated Nikon 24 megapixel Nikon D3x will be announced in September 2008.

If Nikon doesn’t release anything, Sigma sure is

Those are the Nikon mount lenses Sigma has released this month:

18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM for Nikon Release Date 2008.6.20
APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM for Nikon Release Date 2008.6.18
APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM for Nikon Release Date 2008.6.11
I believe those are Japan’s release dates, since they are not yet available on the US web site.

Live View

It seems that Live View is the topic of the day (see previous post).
Today Canon released its new entry level model Canon EOS Rebel XS. This camera is almost identical to the Nikon D60, except the Live View – see comparison here. Sony is also actively pushing Live View and soon will offer cheap FF DSLR.
At that point Nikon does not have a cheap(-er) DSLR with FF sensor and/or Live View (both Canon and Sony do). I am not comparing cameras here, I am just noticing the trend – so let’s don’t start any brand name wars. This should give us some indications what will be coming out from Nikon by the end of 2008.

Pop Photo Editors Predict What’s Next for Nikon DSLRs

Popular Photography & Imaging speculation:
“The D3 and D300 knocked us with a one-two punch. So we predict that rather than try to top those cameras, Nikon will likely upgrade the D80, bumping up the sensor to 12MP and adding Live View, and keeping the price down to under $1,300.”
