Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX detailed review

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

  • small and compact design with a metal bayonet
  • good image quality at the edge of the frame to stop more than the f/2.0
  • very good work under severe light
  • quiet and efficient autofocus
  • good value for money

Disadvantages:

  • poor image quality at the edge of the frame to the vicinity of maximum opening
  • distortion could be less
  • clear chromatic aberration
  • spore vignetting – this was the google translation (?), a reader translated that as “noticable vignetting”.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 10-18mm f/4 G ED N?

I will be updating this post as I get more info on this potentially new lens Nikon AF-S Nikkor 10-18mm f/4 G ED N.

  • Origin: someone claimed that the picture was found in QQ groups (QQ is something like MSN messenger in China).
  • jeff-c could not confirm or deny this rumor on dpreview.

  • Here is a comparison between the two lenses (10-18mm and 14-24mm), once scaled to the same size and the 14-24mm is placed on top of the 10-18mm (sent by a reader – thanks SM):

  • Could it be fake? Here is a comparison with the 14-24 and the 12-24.

  • I think this next picture is the money shot – it looks real to me, but again the question is: does it make sense for Nikon to produce this lens?

  • I do know one thing: our polls have always been accurate:

Missing Nikon lens model numbers

A post from a reader in response to the missing Nikon HB-44 hood:

“Here’s another missing number (at least in the U.S):

The 16-85mm, released February 08 was model #2178 (link)
The 18-105mm, released August 08 was model #2179 (link
)
The 50mm 1.4G, released September 08 was model #2180 (link
)
The 35mm AF-S is model #2183 (link
)

Where is model #2181 and #2182?

It could have been assigned to another accessory and not a lens, but Nikon usually keeps these numbers pretty much in sequence (flashes are in the 4000 series, for example). So has #2181 and #2182 already been assigned to lenses we don’t know about yet?”

Thanks Z.

Confusion: another Nikon UK price hike in March

Email sent to customers of Grays of Westminster:

“As a uniquely Nikon-only shop, Grays of Westminster is the perfect destination for your Nikon needs. Now, as well as a full range of bodies and accessories, we are pleased to announce that we unexpectedly have in stock a very small number of the following sought-after, rarely available lenses:

AF-S 300mm f/2.8G VR IF-ED (available while stocks last at the special price of £3,299) – RRP after March 1st is £4,999
AF-S 400mm f/2.8G VR IF-ED (available while stocks last at the special price of £5,749) – RRP after March 1st is £8,199
AF-S 200mm f/2G VR IF-ED (available at the old price of £2,949) – RRP after March 1st is £3,849

This is certainly an excellent time to make purchases of Nikon cameras, lenses and accessories from Grays of Westminster. Due to the sterling/yen differential, an increase of price will occur with all Nikon kit on the first of March, 2009. However, we are able to offer our range of Nikon bodies, lenses and accessories all at very favourable prices at this precise moment, so there is not a better moment to buy the kit you have always desired than now.”

I guess as long as the yen keeps getting stronger against other currencies, we will keep seeing price increases.
