Which one is it going to be? (Nikon D700s or Nikon D700x)

At, that point it seems that the chances of a Nikon D700s (D700+video) are higher than a new Nikon D700x (D700 + 24 MP sensor).

Nikon Australia seems to think so – a technical rep said to a dpreview readerWe’ve just heard, there will be no D700x“.

PhotographyBay caught another tip from Southern Photo Technical Service (this site have been posting weird Nikon rumors for a while, so I am not sure how reliable this info can be):

As I mentioned before the Nikon D700 has been deleted from Best Buy inventory system. Maybe it did not sell well. At the same time they still carry the Nikon D300s (which is also a pro camera, not to mention that they were the first to get it in stock in the US). Here is the proof – the Nikon D700 status is “Deleted”:

Reminder: Nikon D300 was also deleted from Best Buy inventory system aprox. 3 months before the D300s was released. On their website they still have the D700 listed as backordered.

Nikon D300s @ Best Buy today

A birdy told me that my local Best Buy will get the goodies today (Thursday, August 27th). The Nikon D300s and D3000 just came out of the box when I got there – they were still charging the batteries and I did not have a lot of time to change the settings – the videos were shot with whatever the default setting was right out of the box.

Nikon D300s and D3000 @ BestBuy:

This is how 7 fps looks/sounds like:

This is how the AF-On function works during video recording – basically you hit the AF-ON button during video recording and the camera autofocus automatically based on contrast-detect (a feature that the D90 doesn’t have):

The jelly effect is still there:

Nikon Camera Control Pro 2.6.0 update released

Here is the US link. What’s new:

  • Support for the D300S been added.
  • Macintosh:
    • Support for Mac OS X version 10.5.7 has been added.
    • An issue that caused Camera Control Pro 2 to stop responding (freeze) when a RAW image captured by a D1X camera was selected in the Viewer has been resolved.
    • When images were captured with Rotate all downloaded images by 90 degrees CCW or Rotate all downloaded images by 90 degrees CW enabled and displayed in the Viewer, thumbnails may not have been displayed, or Camera Control Pro 2 may have quit unexpectedly.  This issue has been resolved
  • Windows:
    • Support for the Service Pack 2 versions of 32-bit Windows Vista Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Enterprise/Ultimate has been added.
    • When a folder on a network drive was selected as the download destination under Windows Vista, an error occurred.  A network drive can no longer be selected under Windows Vista.
    • When the camera was disconnected from the computer during time lapse shooting and then reconnected, an error occurred when the Time Lapse Photography dialog was closed.  This issue has been resolved.

If you don’t want to spend money on Nikon Camera Control Pro 2.6.0, try those free alternatives.

Nikon D700 no longer available at Best Buy

Update: Nikon D700 is listed as backordered on bestbuy.com.

Best Buy discontinued the Nikon D300 approximately 3 months before the D300s was announced. Two weeks ago I received a tip that Best Buy has discontinued the Nikon D700. Today a NikonCafe member (registration required) confirmed that. He was told by the Best Buy manager that the “Nikon D700 was no longer available as the SKU number had been deleted and there were none available”.

Could be a sign of things to come.
