Coincidence?

Update: Nikon Germany also announced the system maintenance window.

Nikon UK announced a system maintenance for the period of December 8th to December 10th, 2009:

This maintenance time window coincidentally matches the scheduled Nikon Event in Slovenia on December 10th (maybe they are updating their website with new products which has been a common practice in the past, before an official announcement). I don’t have high expectations for the December 10th event at that point – it just has been too quiet lately but nevertheless this is the rumor I have for you today. I also do not have any information for similar events in other countries.

Probability of new Nikon products being announced next week: 60%. We are talking about lenses here, no more DSLRs this year.

Maybe I was wrong: Nikon event on December 10th in Slovenia

nikon-event-slovenia-december-10th

Maybe I rushed to judgement with my previous post “That was it for 2009” because I just received an invitation from Nikon Slovenia for a Nikon event on December 10th, 2009 (Thursday next week). The email invitation is legit and was sent to NPS members and journalists. Google translation of the invitation (updated):

“Nikon Slovenia invites you to meet and have a pre-new year get-together with appetizers, alongside journalists, NPS and professional photographers.

The event which will take place on December 10th at 11:00 at Nikon Slovenia’s new building in Ljubljana, Leskoškova 9e; will have Rok Gašparič the co-ordinator for Slovenia at Nikon Slovenia, presenting among other things, Nikon’s most powerful professional camera – the D3s and two more news (remaining a secret for now).”

And two more secret news? Nikon Slovenia just moved to a new building and the mystery news may not be related to a new product.

If anyone else (from a different country) has received an invitation for a Nikon event next week, please drop me a line.

NPS survey in Europe – all about the D700 replacement

Update: this survey is now sent to registered Nikon users worldwide (not only to NPS). I will publish my own D700 replacement survey later on today.

NPS members in Europe received an email survey from Nikon today. The first few questions were pretty standard (what camera you have, what features are important to you, any feedback to Nikon, etc). After going through the rest of the survey, it was clear that this whole campaign was created to gather information/data for the Nikon D700 replacement. Here are some of the questions (those are not direct quotations):

  • What improvements you would like to see in the D700 or why did you not purchase one?
  • How likely it is that you will purchase a Nikon D700?
  • What would you photograph with a FX camera?
  • What are the most important features of a FX camera?
  • Are you interested in a FX camera (vs. DX camera)?
  • What is the largest print size you use?
  • Will you purchase a DSLR in the next 12 months?
  • There were few questions about pixel count – how important it is, etc. One of the example question was about a 15 MP and 25MP resolutions – not sure if they picked those numbers randomly or there is a reason behind it.

Now, I am not sure if this is a good or bad news – is Nikon just starting now to think about the D700 replacement? Maybe they just want to be sure that what they have in their labs is what people would buy.

That was it for 2009

In the past, Nikon has released new products in December only three times (excluding software and firmware updates):

You can clearly see that the first week of December is Nikon’s preferred time frame. The lack of any rumors and leaks as of today suggests that Nikon is done releasing new products for 2009. The only hope for new lenses in December (based on the rumor from Germany) is now gone (the AF-DC 135mm f/2 will probably still be replaced in 2010).

Here is a list of the new products released by Nikon Imaging in 2009:

2 entry level bodies, 2 pro bodies, 4 DX lenses and one full frame lens!

Given also the Holiday season, I do not expect a great amount of rumors in the next month or so. In the mean time I will continue to cover interesting Nikon related topics/news.

Amazon just got in stock the new Nikon D300s book by David Busch (bibliography | more info on this book can be found oh his website here). I happened to have two signed copies (courtesy of David Busch himself) of that book to give away. The rules are simple – just leave a comment to this post. I will close all comments in 24 hours and will randomly pick two winners. Of course I don’t believe in “US only” giveaways and I will ship those books anywhere in the world.

Fine print: The contest is void where prohibited by law. If you are not old enough to be eligible to win a free photography book, go live someplace else. All taxes are the responsibility of the winner. NikonRumors.com is not responsible for anything.
