Sony rumored to announce 24MP APS-C sensor, what would Nikon do? (Nikon D400)

The current Sony a700 12.24MP Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor

The current Sony a700 12.24MP Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor

Amateur Photographer is not big on reporting rumors, but today they did just that: the Sony α700 replacement is rumored to have a new APS-C sensor with high ISO “up into the hundreds of thousands” and resolution of 25MP. The potential release is expected to be around September at PMA 2011 (now called CliQ 2011).

This upcoming sensor from Sony could be the base for the D300s replacement (D400?), unless Nikon really is designing and producing their own sensors now. Since the replacement of the α700 will be a direct competitor of the D300s successor, it will be interesting to see who will make the announcement first (my guess is Sony).

Nikontrol 3K is a free remote control PC software for Nikon DSLRs *updated*

Update: a new version of the program got released today. Please note that this software doesn’t work with RAW (NEF) files (yet).

I have been a big fan and supporter of free software for Nikon DSLRs, created based on Nikon’s SDK (Software Development Kit). The latest addition is Nikontrol 3K that can be downloaded for free here. The idea is that the official Nikon’s Camera Control Pro doesn’t support some of the latest consumer level DSLRs, not to mention its price tag of $150. The software works by connecting a Nikon D3000, D40 or a D90 via the USB cable to a PC and can:

Lengthy interview with Nikon at CES 2011, not a single word on future products

If you were wondering what was going on in those Nikon meeting rooms during CES 2011, here is the one and only Nikon report from CES by Imaging-Resource in the form of an interview with Nikon’s Senior Vice President David Lee. Kudos to Imaging-Resource who asked the right questions and tried on several occasions to extract some valuable info about future products. However, Mr. Lee was definitive with his answers: “we really never talk about future products before they’re announced“.

Few quotes from David Lee after the break:

Weekly Nikon related news/links #92

A quick note to all Facebook “friends” of NikonRumors: three years ago when I started the [NR] Facebook page I wasn’t smart enough and set it up as a personal account. This was not a good idea according to Facebook’s TOS. Anyway, the old account is all gone and 4k+ contacts are lost. Here is the new [NR] fan page – hit the like button to stay updated:

Otherwise it was a slow week for Nikon news with CES 2011 currently going on (I did not see a single report on Nikon from CES):

Nikon D5000 RIP (officially discontinued by Nikon)

Nikon Japan has a listing of all discontinued Nikon products. The latest addition? Nikon D5000:

The next candidate for this list is the Nikon D90 (probably in a matter of weeks, maybe even days).

A Nikon D5000 replacement is expected soon and could be announced with the Coolpix refresh in mid-February.

Possible Nikon D4 sighting at a hockey game

A reader sent me those two pictures of an unidentified Nikon camera and lens taken at a recent NHL game:

The camera looks like a D3/D3x/D3s. The body and the lens are both covered up, but the shape of the pentaprism is what got me interested:
