Nikon announcement in 24 hours (CES 2013)

Nikon-announcement-CES-2013-show

In approximately 24 hours Nikon will have their announcement at the 2013 CES show for the Nikon 1 J3, S1two 1 Nikkor lenses and probably the introduction of the D5200 in North America. I do not expect any other surprises for tomorrow. The official announcement should happen at, or around, midnight EST on Monday. I think some “more interesting” products will be released during the CP+ show in Japan (January 31 – February 3). Stay tuned for detailed coverage.

Today’s guest post on aerial photography is by Matt McCarthy (more aerial photos can be found on flickr):

We may not all get the chance (or want the chance) to shoot from a small plane someday, but if the opportunity ever presents itself, it will probably be over before you know it and there will be a lot of things you wish you’d thought of while you were up there. Here are a few tips that apply to a typical high-wing Cessna (click on image for larger view):

Nikon’s patent for a hybrid, semi-transparent LCD screen

28

Nikon filed a patent (2012-257100) in Japan for a semi-transparent, see-through, rotating LCD screen. The idea behind this patent is to overlay the camera’s live view on a semi-transparent LCD display. This will allow a better tracking of fast moving objects and the photographer will be able to observe the entire scene beyond what is being shown in live view (similar to a rangefinder where you can see outside the frame lines). Nikon is basically trying to create a LCD screen version of the Fuji X100 hybrid viewfinder where optical and electronic display are combined into one. The patent includes several different solutions. Detailed description from the Japanese Patent Office (machine translated):

Nikon patents a lens for mirrorless APS-C camera

Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens patent

Nikon filed a patent (2012-220827) in Japan for a Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Egami reports that this lens was designed for a mirrroless APS-C based camera. It will be interesting to see in the next few months if  more similar patents will show up online. I seriously doubt that Nikon will introduce a new mirrorless camera system any time soon. I think there is a better chance for something like the Pentax K-01 that will be compatible with all F-mount DX lenses – I cannot see Nikon supporting another mount in addition to the CX and DX/FX.
