CIPA’s September report is out and it is not that bad




CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their September report (orange: 2019, black: 2018, blue: 2017, click for larger view):

For the month:

  • DSLR units shipped: 453K units (highest of the year, but 19.2% below last year. August was 414K.)
  • Mirrorless units shipped: 418K units (highest of the year and 12.6% above last year. August was 288K.)
  • Compact units shipped: 621K units (highest of the year but 22.5% below last year. August was 599K.)

Calendar year to date:

  • DSLR Units  -34%
  • DSLR Shipped Value -43%
  • Mirrorless Units -9%
  • Mirrorless Shipped Value +6%
  • Compact Units -20%
  • Compact Shipped Value -16%
  • Lenses for smaller than 35mm Units –28%
  • Lenses for smaller than 35mm Shipped Value -26%
  • Lenses for 35mm and larger Units -13%
  • Lenses for 35mm and larger Shipped Value -1%
  • Mirrorless unit share (of Mirrorless + DSLR) 44.5% (was 36.8% YTD last year)
  • Mirrorless Shipped Value share 59.8%
