Wish one day, they put all the data about any lens in a memory chip inside lens itself, and whenever you put that on a body, lens start telling that body: “Hey, that’s how you should fix my optical shortcomings.”

    • T.I.M

Nikon lenses already have a chip with informations (aperture, focale, distance, etc…)

    • then you have to update every lens alone 😛

    • nwcs

Basically, some mirrorless systems do that now. Tags the raw files with distortion corrections that can be applied or not.

  • T.I.M

Nikon distortion control is great, I always use it when I take pictures of my mother in law, now the kids are not scared anymore !

  • Andrew Bearman

I’m getting a McAfee virus warning (“”) with the Windows version of the download link. Be careful.

    • T.I.M

Too late, you are already infected, now your Nikon cameras and lenses will turn into Canon….

  • catfishb52

I installed it on my D610 with no antivirus warnings. All went smoothly

    • Wally Brooks

What do you think of it in camera vs in post with lightroom, photoshot, or other editor?

      • catfishb52

        Sorry I haven’t used my camera since installing the update.;

  • Spy Black

Unless your images really need it, you don’t really want to use distortion correction, because image detail is always lost in the process. Wideangle FOV is diminished as well.

  • Nikos Charpantidis

112.23 KB only??? the file cant open

    • rckirk

      Can’t open either.

      • stesk

        No problem with Mac.

    • Juan José González Cruz

I am wondering, why the 2.013 version of the distortion correction firmware file is so small compared to the previous one, 2.09 version? Has anyone notice this? I did successfully upgrade the firmware on my D610 and D7000 but the concern remains ….

  • vousplaisentezouquoi

If it is a new version why the D610 firmware is always the same as one year ago (C:1.01)?

    • Sebastian Rasch

Distortion data are the ‘L’ firmware, not C. However, you need C 1.01 on a D610 to be able to update the L firmware.

  • TheInfinityPoint

Updates worked fine for me on my D7000, D750, and D800.

    • rckirk

      PC or Apple?

      • TheInfinityPoint

        PC (Windows).

        • rckirk

Got it to open with my wife’s MAC. No problem then loading onto D800. Windows remained a no go.

  • David Matei

It worked fine on my D810.
    I can’t make update on my D800 with the same card/PC/Win 8.
    Any solution ?

    • TheInfinityPoint

That’s odd. I loaded the bin file (from Win7 x64 Pro) onto a crap 2 GB SD card and stuck it into all of my cameras and it worked fine.

  • Clifford Martin

Wonder if Adobe will make use of this new file to update their distortion control in Camera Raw?

  • RIT

I followed the “more information” link above and read the update then took the link at the bottom of the next page to “Download Center” …D800E… Software (to update my software as opposed to firmware) … on to the Product Description and only these lenses have been added:-
    • AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR
    • AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
    • AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G
    • AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR
    • AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR
    • AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G ED
    • AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR
    • AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR

No such listing is given under the Firmware update Product Description but it’s probably safe to assume both updates are the same. I had hoped for better distortion correction across the range and inclusion of the wonderful 20mm f/1.8G but perhaps it doesn’t need it!.

I never use Nikon’s distortion correction as I find it lacking so I’m reluctant to install it. I only ever correct Fisheye distortion and then by using RectFish by AcaPixus which I find far superior to anything else (Still waiting for that new Fisheye!). I’ll try posting an example:

  • Spr Cmd

update went through fast on D610, no problem.

  • Judith Toth

It can’t make update on my D800.
On My D810 went very fast, blink of an eye.
    Any ideea ?

    • rckirk

Did you format the card after installing firmware on the D810 and then download the D800 version and try insralling?

  • Judith Toth

I succeeded to make the firmware update for D800 . . . but only with a Mac laptop.
