Nikon D4 listed as discontinued, NEF codec support for D4s is already out

Crutchfield is already listing the Nikon D4 as discontinued. The camera is also not in stock at the major US retailers (B&H, Adorama and Amazon). The good news is that the new D4s is rumored to have the same price.

The latest version of the Nikon NEF Codec already supports the upcoming D4s model:

WEX Photographic in the UK also removed the D4 listing from their website.

Let’s see how much discount major retailers will offer on the discontinued D4, probably not much but hope springs eternal.

    • John

It looks like they all sold down their stock already in anticipation of the D4s.

    • I don’t think there will be any discounted D4 cameras – they have been out of stock for months.

  • Neopulse

Great job with the support ahead of time. That’s a good gesture proving that it’s just around the corner.

  • broxibear

There are a number of places with D4 bodies in stock in the UK, you might be able to negotiate a bargain if you’re after one…it’s what I did whith my D3 when the D3s was announced, got it for a stupidly low price.

    • broxibear

Calumet UK (one of the biggest pro dealers) no longer has the D4 listed at all.

      • broxibear

        oops, forgot the image.

      • Naval Gunfire

WEX still lists them on their site as in stock.

i have to salivate on d900…. d4s is expensive

    • mikeswitz

Then clearly it is ot for you. What’s wrong with the D800? Too cheap?

      • saywhatuwill

D800 lacks the carbon fiber body, 4k video, a switchable AA filter (on or off), Expeed 4, and two of the same type of storage cards.

        • Ron Keckwell

And a coupon for a large 2-topping pizza.

        • mikeswitz

You want 4k on your D800? Why? You want switchable AA filter because you’ve had so many problems with moire? Expeed 4 because we just need it. I mean who doesn’t? And while we’re at it let’s pay an extra grand for all this stuff because eeryone knows having to shoot with the D800 has f**ked us up so badly. And when we do spend that extra grand we can all complain how Nikon is ripping us off. ;=(

          • n11

Don’t forget “two of the same type of storage cards” which D4/D4s don’t have.

        • umeshrw

And D4s has all that? (That is if you have posted in continuation of OP). Even otherwise there is no featureset (even rumoured) available for D900 with these features.

          • saywhatuwill

No the D4s doesn’t have all that, which is why we need to wait for the D900.

            • umeshrw

“Even otherwise there is no featureset (even rumoured) available for D900 with these features.”
( Part of my reply from earlier post)

“and two of the same type of storage cards”

did you ever even saw D800 ? not alone touch one…

          • saywhatuwill

Guess you didn’t read very closely…”and two of the same type of storage cards”

The D800 has a SD AND a CF card. Guess you didn’t touch that D800 you claim to have. Same type usually means TWO SD cards or TWO CF cards, not ONE of each.

D4s isn’t expensive after I factor in how much money I can make with it.

      • Df fanboy

But you can get the same sensor for less money.

        • Mike

Less camera for less money too.

        • umeshrw

Only sensor does not make the camera.

  • Rafa R

I wonder if Nikon is going to give away XQD readers inside the D4s Boxes as they did with the first D4 s to come out back then.

  • gr8fan

It’s amazing that a high end camera gets discontinued only after less than 2 years! Wow!

    • Joseph Li

Yep..seems like yesterday that I just picked up my it’s discontinued? I remember I had my D3s for a long while before the D4 came along

  • Unfortunately I guess this means shopping for a D4s will be back up to RRP prices as opposed to the £4225 the likes of WEX is quoting here in the UK (with stock still available).

  • neversink

I’m pretty flabbergasted as to why they would even put out a D4s with very little change in the specs. There was quite a difference between the D3 and the D3s, much more so than between the D4 and the D4s. I love ny D4. i plan on getting quite a few more years out of the D4 before I upgrade. Maybe I will wait for a D5 or a D6. Can’t see upgrading to the “s” version when the D4 is nearly the same camera.

  • rabbit

It’s weird how we all want more features on these cameras and blah blah blah but what did we do when all we had was 35mm film? and medium format?

    • umeshrw

Very true. But that is human nature and habit taking over.

    • neversink

I agree with you…. I kept my F2 camera bodies for many years and still used them even when I finally “upgraded” to the F3. Funny, the F3 had the same exact “sensor” as the F2 and even the Ftn and I never heard anyone complain. In fact it had the same “sensor” as the competing camera brands!!!! And there were no complaints. But of course Al Gore hadn’t yet invented the internet! ;-/

  • Sleeper

Money grabbing whores. Pure and simple.

    D4s offers absolutely fk all.

  • E-Nonymouse A

“The good news is its for the same price” call me crazy but I can’t consider that good news at all, it’s overpriced as it was. It’s a really nice camera but it’s not worth the list price, plus they most likely will not have made any substantive improvements to this “new” D4 model compared to the old one..
