Nikon’s “lens-only” rebates are coming back in March

There is a very good chance that the popular Nikon "lens-only" rebates will be available in the US next month (March). The new rebates will most likely be applied on top of the lens price drop we already got few months ago. My guess is that after the D500 delay, Nikon decided that they will need some extra revenue at the end of their financial year (March 31st). The amount of the rebates will depend on how much they are hurting 🙂 Stay tuned for details.

I welcome this news! My wife on the other hand thinks I have too many lenses already. Looking at a 80-400 AFS.

      What wife doesn’t?

Only because they end up using your new lenses more than you. What’s yours is theirs, what’s theirs is theirs.

      • nwcs

My wife. 🙂 She wants me to buy more lenses since it makes me happy. 🙂

        • T.I.M

Maybe she think buying more lenses will help you to focus more on her….

          • nwcs

Lol. Maybe but she’s happy in that department too. 🙂

Bet there’s about to be a hell of a rebate on the new 24-70

    • Thom Hogan

      Hard to tell. Here’s why:

What I’d add to what NR posted are a few things. First, the sudden and unexpected yen appreciation against the dollar means that lenses that are in current product and high demand aren’t likely to have much, if any, discount. Second, it’s clear to me that any deep discounts in March mean that Nikon is micro-managing their financials again, trying to drive product out to and thru the subsidiaries. This point is in contradiction to the first, so it’ll be interesting to see how Nikon juggles it. Third, with the D5 appearing in March, demand for the new 24-70mm is likely to be up. Finally, it also depends upon how much old 24-70mm inventory they have around. Clearly, they want to move that, though that won’t help their financials much if they do. So again, another point that is contradiction.

In other words, it’s tough to predict what happens with the 24-70mm VR.

Now if you had said 80-400mm AF-S VR, I might have agreed. I’m sure sales on this lens are down some as it has now been around for awhile and the 200-500mm has pulled some users away. But I’m also sure that Nikon wants to keep the 80-400mm in production, so…discount to goose demand a bit.

80-400 vs 200-500 is definitely a one-or-the-other for me for birding with a D500 + D810 kit, and a tough choice. The 200-500 sounds surprisingly good for the price based on first reports. If there’s a significant difference in AF speed that might make it the 80-400. Decisions, decisions.

        • nwcs

The big thing is portability. The 80-400 is far more portable an option and much easier to handhold. I’ve used it before and after using bigger lenses (Nikon 200-400, Sigma 150-500, Tamron 200-500, Tamron 150-600) it felt a lot smaller.

  • Pat Mann

The 16-80 certainly needs a rebate if it wants to go into my bag.

    • fanboy fagz

should sell for $700 at most.

    • KnightPhoto

The Canadian kit price of the 16-80 is $400 off with the D500

      • Pat Mann

Perhaps Nikon USA will wake up if they get a look at the preorders for the D500, only 3 of which include 16-80 lens. That amount might make the difference for me, and I already have the 16-85.

      • Allen_Wentz

When I ordered the D500 the Nikon rep hinted to me that the 16-80 would also get a USA kit deal.

        • KnightPhoto

Yes I heard rumblings of a reduced USA D500 kit price from someone who attended the Nikon D5/D500 demo. Maybe that was you 😉

          • TylerChappell

            I would expect the D500 + 16-80mm kit to be $2500.

  • Politics_Nerd

Hoping for the 20mm 1.8 to get a drop. That and I need to file my taxes so my refund can get here in time. 😉

    Hi admin,

Any chance the rebate will come in before February 27th? It will be still under 30 days then that I got my Nikon 35mm f/1.8 FX during which I can have a price match.

    • I have no date for now, sorry.

    • Thom Hogan

Unlikely. Nikon has had some end-of-month programs transition on Saturdays, but they tend to do it on Sundays.

Any chance for body only? or body+lens combo?

  • fanboy fagz

on one hand raising prices, then on the other rebates.

just give a good price and be done with it. prices should be much lower with the weak yen.

        • nwcs

But with a profile pic like that how can you go wrong? Looks trustworthy to me.

  • Photobug

Boy did I get this one wrong when I predicted no lens rebates. I see where they are coming from and agree with Tom Hogan’s comments.

  • whisky

hopefully there’ll be something for everyone — so it’ll be a win-win all around.

  • MichaelSNC

Any idea when they are supposed to start? I need to buy two lenses, soon. I had planned on ordering one tomorrow. Now I will probably put it off. Thanks for all you do!!

    • wait for another week, I do not have any other details

      • It’s March 1st, any word?

        • no updates, sorry

          • Thanks! Just checking… Appreciate all the info though!

            • I still believe they are coming, I just don’t when and what exactly the savings will be. Nikon usually start the rebates on a weekend.

            • Thanks for looking out. I’ll try and be patient. Lol. Have a great weekend!

            • come back here on Sunday, I think I will have the details

  • jojo

Coming back? Would be nice to get them for the first time in UK, instead of cashback offers on just a few specific items. On the other hand, Fujifilm are offering some good CB deals that are really tempting and also encourage multiple purchases – much better marketing in UK.
