Nikon D7100 and a compact DX camera announcement in few hours

In few hours (around midnight EST) Nikon will most likely announce the D7100 and a new compact camera. As I already mentioned few weeks ago, the D7100 will have a 24MP sensor and 100-6400 ISO range with body design similar to the D600. The new compact camera will have a fixed 18mm f/2.8 lens (28mm equivalent), APS-C sensor, EXPEED 2 processor and Wi-Fi support.

Stay tuned for detailed coverage.

Update: Nikon D7100 detailed specs.

wow, if it is so, them Nikon must have sealed their mouth really well.

  • khaled tolba

Here hoping the D7100 will inherit the 51-point AF system from the D800, I can live with any other shortcomings

    • Raj

+1. That would be absolutely phenomenal but I don’t anticipate it though.

Nikon is likely to leave the 51 AF for D400. If they include it in D7100, that will be the last nail in the coffin for the Dxxx DX series

      • khaled tolba

There’s a spec list on Canonrumors forum that looks legit and lists the AF as the same as the D300s which is 51 point

        • Raj

I saw that too, after posting my response. Looks very slick, it’s good thing I cancelled my D7000 order few days ago :).

          time to take the plunge.

        • http://sonaten.se/ Jonas N

          Yup. I don’t think there will be a “D400″.

    First????

  • sam LeDogge

    Upgraded AF?

  • Poony

Finally It’s here!!! The compact everyone have been waiting for…ahh I meant the D7100.
Can’t wait to see the full spec, more fps, bigger buffer and better built I’d pick one up in a flash! How much do you think its going to cost thats the big question!

  • Fred Flintstone

Nikon won’t rock the boat – unless they announce the new 16-85 f/4 to go with it as the new kit lens

  • Rhonbo

Well here’s hoping the output is even better than the D5200 with no banding issues and good shadow pull / DR along with an improved AF system. If it’s too pricey then it will be a refurb D600 for me.

  • wildlifethailand

I am hoping the 7100 will not disappoint me, but somehow I have an inkling it may.

  • Scott M

The FPS question is the question.

    • Fred Flintstone

And the buffer is the other

      • Scott M

        They do work together

        • Fred Flintstone

          Like love and marriage!

          • Scott M

Answer is 6fps and 100 for the buffer

            • Fred Flintstone

Should be sweet, maybe there will be no D400 after all

      • khaled tolba

Looks like it got a decent buffer, 6 FPS up to 100 shots, not sure if this is JPEG or NEF but combined with a 24.1 MP sensor that’s pretty respectful.

    • rhlpetrus

      6fps

Looks pretty slick, based on the spec sheet from Canon Rumors (who would’ve guessed it). 51 Point AF to boot.

  • Fred Flintstone

Say what you like about Uncle Ken, he’s right on one thing – whatever its specs it won’t make you a better photographer

  • JikoJiko

24.1-megapixel sensor without using an optical low pass filter. This is the big deal.

    • Tags

I was thinking that they could do that to really differentiate this camera from others. I would be giving this a hard look as a landscape cam vs d600 if it lacked an AA. I personally find the difference between AA and sans-AA to be quite noticeable. I hope you are correct

  • Scott M

Wow, This like a D7100E. Sounds really good all around. Either Canonrumors is having fun or Nikon has a winner on it’s hands

  • Fred Flintstone

Of course some people might find a wide angle prime could come in handy – and maybe a fast tele zoom, and a fast mid zoom, etc. Seems DX is not dead yet but buyers might want a few lenses to go with that thankyou very much

    • Fred Flintstone

Like a 17-55 VR and a 50-150 VR or something like that

  • vFunct

Nice. Looks like they’re using a Pro AF system from the D300s, instead of the slower D7000 AF system. Interesting that they’re going with no AA filter as well.. very pro-oriented.

      What are you reading?

      • khaled tolba

Canonrumors forum, that’s where you get your Nikon rumors from

  • Fred Flintstone

This might also set the bar higher for the D400

    • Aldo

Dont look like there will be one sir… from the specs this camera will be superior to the d600 except in iso

  • Aldo

There you go… nikon delivers again. Stop whining and crying

    • Fred Flintstone

Boo hoo! I wanted 4K video!

  • Scott M

    The Canons are weeping again

    • Raj

Doubt it. Canon crowd will have their own 7D upgrade soon.

I, for one, am looking to the Nikon after having sold my canon APS-C gear recently. Can’t stand the indoor AWB (too much work in post processing).

      • cobby64

Ya.. A Real 7D upgrade that feels good in the hands. D300s updgrade.. :(

  • Scott M

If they give it 6fps base and 7 or 8 with the grip, it looks like this could be a combination D7000/D300 replacement. They could price it at $1500 and not introduce a D400. 7 FPS would be the minimum I would consider purchasing it with. Although doing the math, with a single EXPEED 3 I don’t think 8FPS is possible (based on the D4’s specs).

  • http://www.facebook.com/reilly.diefenbach.54 Reilly Diefenbach

Looks like Canon Rumors stole a march there. How did that happen?

  • Rhonbo

Still seems odd that there have been no leaks on these two camera this time. I hope Nikon does not price the camera too high since it’s in a D7000 /D600 level body. Looks like a camera I would be interested in depending on the pricing.

  • Fred Flintstone

Funny that Canon Rumours has the grab on the specs :-)

  • Scott M

Full time autofocus for HD video.

  • js200022

This may be the D300s replacement.

    • Fred Flintstone

Now now this is not the place for such rumors

  • GlobalGuy

Nice news. But why ANOTHER mid-price 6400 ISO camera? When are we going to get a low-cost ISO 12,800 or more?? Low-light ability is so much more important than a few extra megabytes.

    • Aldo

      Oh god

      • Aldo

Its dx sir and you want fx iso performance… give it time

    • Raj

We have A58 in theory to deliver that. Whether 12,800 ISO picture is worth even capturing is another story.

I, for one, am looking for a usable 6400 ISO and will be happy with that.

  • Scott M

If there are more FPS with a grip, it probably is

  • Aldo

    Rip d600

    • http://twitter.com/NickAroraPhoto Nick Arora

      really?

  • Tom Malewicki

“and a new viewfinder with a low-power consumption OLED display element for bright, high contrast data readout and provides approx. 100% frame coverage.”

    wtf?

    • Arkasai

I wondered about that too but since they didn’t go into any detail on it, I figure it’s the typical exposure information at the bottom of the viewfinder.

Adm., looks like there were two different SKU# s needed after all.

    • js200022

      Good job, Admin. Again.

  • Andrea

Why so many people argue that this is the D300s replacement? This is the D7000 replacement, isn’t it obvious?

    • Arkasai

The leaked press release starts off with “meet the new flagship of Nikon’s DX blah blah–“

    FINALLY. Good Nikon GOOD.
In one moment I though what the D5200 was the top of DX cameras.
    Where is the cashier???

  • benZ

WOW ! If this is TRUE, I salute Nikon.
DAMN ! NIKON is so air-tight , no leaks on this up to now ! Where have all the internal sources gone to ?

    • Danonino

They have been fired of course. But what I dont understand is why everyone is talking about the extremely boring mainstream dslr D7100 when there is more exciting stuff coming for the real photographers??

  • http://www.facebook.com/ceasar.sharper Ceasar Sharper

NR, well I still see Nikon as having a DX gap after looking at the leaked spec for a Canon 7DII. Wow, 24mp, 10fps with GPS at a cost of $2,199. I really don’t see a D7100 as the top of the DX line in comparison to a 7DII

    • Neopulse

Remember reading that they weren’t going to make a 7DMKII, but in fact merge the 7D and 60D to make a 70D. And I also think the 7DMKII specs are amazing (not the price though), but my wildlife camera’s gonna be the V2 combo in the end :( (around $1500)

    Boo, wheres the DX camera?

Well.. I hope the screen is not green

where is the compact mirrorless camera!?!?!?!

      It’s coming.

      • duo

Looks like they’re saving the best for last… lets hope it will compete with DP1m…

  • John

And where is this compact DX camera then?

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

      It’s coming… soon probably
