Updated Nikon D800 specs

I am now 99% confident that the remaining unconfirmed specs from this Nikon D800 post and the D800 pictures are real. Here is the updated list:

  • 36 MP sensor (7360x4912)
  • 100% viewfinder coverage
  • Improved AF with face recognition – the D800 will still have 51 points AF point
  • CF+SD memory card slots
  • USB 3.0
  • ISO range: 100 – 6400, ISO LO @ 50 and  ISO HI-2 @ 25600
  • The screen will be larger than 3 inches (probably 3.2 in.)
  • The D800 will not have built-in GPS
  • Expeed 3 processor
  • There will be two different D800 versions/models, one with the antialiasing filter removed
  • 4 fps continuous shooting, about 6 fps in DX mode with optional battery pack
  • Video modes: 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24
  • Headphone jack, can input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder
  • 86k pixels RGB sensor
  • 200,000 shutter cycles
  • Uncompressed HDMI video out (just like the Nikon D4)
Still no idea about the exact D800 announcement date.

I keep wondering the sales ratio of the two cameras below, theoretically both available in the market & priced the same.

    D800 – as rumored
    D850 – sensor from D4, 7 fps, else the same with D800

About 50-50 % or something different?

Why this D800 is not good for wildlife and reportage. I mean better to keep my D700?

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevline/ kevline

If you’re like me with my d90, d800 of course is awesome even with the low fps (same as the d90). But if I was you and I had the d700 i should keep this one, rather than spend money for some improvements maybe but not so big, or buy the d4. I talk for wildlife photo. this is my opinion, i’d like to see what the others think. And wait for the official annoucement we’ll see if there will be others surprises or not ;)

      • Birding

Thanks for your answer. Indeed if i had the choice (i mean money :-) ) i would definitely buy a D4 but this is not affordable. It may happens that some second hands D3S reach an acceptable price compared to the new D800.
Like you i will wait the announcement and the first tests to decide!

If other readers have comments. Welcome :)

Would be nice if the D4 were to also be 36 MP, with the option of notching down to 16 MP when requiring faster shooting rates.

    “Improved AF with face recognition”

Unless the AF points are spread all over the frame and not placed in center (like the current ones), that feature is useless. My S95 would do a better face recognition…

I think the face recognition would be done by the 86k-point RGB meter.

all these new cameras are amazing just unaffordable to me

With that MP count I wonder how it will handle aliasing in video mode… regardless of optical lowpass filter that’s a tricky thing to handle. Fingers crossed it will handle video ok.

Is there really no market for a full frame 18-24mp camera with 5-6fps? I was planning to buy whichever mfr offered a body like this with a new generation 100-400 zoom. Couldn’t care less about video or face recognition. I guess new zooms will show up eventually, but neither Canon nor Nikon seem interested in the likes of me any more. $5,000+ pro bodies are not an option.

Looks as if I’ll stick with my crap (cropped) 40D and ancient 100-400 until I give up and just buy a used D700 (assuming NIkon ever replaces their 80-400 zoom), or perhaps I should forget about wasting more money on SLRs and use an iPhone exclusively.

wow! Let me tell you that those specs weren’t what i was thinking about when I was expecting the new D800. 36MP??? Seriously? I’m a wedding photographer, I would need now at least the double amount of cards for this camera only. D700 was 12. why they can’t put a 16 in there? More MP more ISO noise to be noticed :-/

    ISO= -6,400-> 25,600 same as D700??

I’m not trying to insult you, but I hope you are wrong in this specs.

      QUALITY!
      NOT QUANTITY…

If D800 has got uncompressed HDMI video out, it’s my camera. NIKON WELL DONE. Again created a mark in the history of image capturing to be first in DSLRs. None of the big names had the courage to do that- whether Canon, Sony, Panasonic or anyone else. As all these companies believe in a slow release of technological advancements to the public and besides they all produce high end video cameras, Uncompressed stream of video out through HDMI or DV/SDI interface may cannibalize their high end stuff. I’m now not selling my Nikon glass.

sorry for a nob question, How could the 2nd version hurt or help?

“There will be two different D800 versions/models, one with the antialiasing filter removed”

(I shoot only in RAW, it is something I should consider?
My photography is a little of everything, Wedd, Portraits, and some product.)

As all these companies believe in a slow release of technological advancements to the public

That’s one reason why I love RED – they work hard and give us the best possible cameras that professionals can afford (the main reason I love them is of course that their cameras are superb, judging from the output that I have seen).

  • JULIET

I may be missing something here but is the D800 supposedly full frame like the D700?

Yes. It is the D700’s successor.

  • Frank

At 36 MP, aren’t you exceeding the resolution of any 35mm lens out there?

  • Pikemann Urge

At 36 MP, aren’t you exceeding the resolution of any 35mm lens out there?

No. But to make use of that resolution (same photosite density as a D7000) you need good lenses.

  • Milen

Just a short question about the autofocus points of the D800:
Why “just” 51 autofocus points if the new V1 has 73? From what i’ve seen so far every new Nikon (pro) generation has had major improvements compared to the former. And i mean not only little gimmicks but always real huge steps. Take the ISO revolution which came with the D3 and the miraculous D3S… Everybody thought, they’d made a mistake with the zeroes.
The competition has increased theirs in the new Eos 1D X if i’m not mistaking…
Let’s hope, it’s just going to take a few more days till we know.
For me it’s a little bit like Christmas when i was a kid, we never knew what presents we’d get, but they’d always be great… :-)
    We’ll know soon enough!

So with 36MP does this make zooms less relevent? Just use a prime lens and crop. Faster, simpler, sharper…

    What am i missing?

36Mpx means that you have more room to crop. However, cropping down to APS-C size leaves you with 17Mpx which is less than half the number of pixels. Not bad, but go down too much further and you’re down to less than 8Mpx. When you crop, you lose pixels at an alarming rate.

  • jit

Any idea about the shutter speeds?

  • http://domfoto.com Alex Kay

I am wondering how long it is going to take for the next Nikon camera release (after D800 is released) :)

  • dnguyen

18MP in my opinion is the sweet spot. Work on better dynamic range. Smaller lenses is better than a smaller body. What’s the point if you can’t have proper balance?

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevline/ kevline

I’m ask myself 86k rgb sensor is it right ? because d7000 have just 2k for example, 86k it’s a really big improvement too big maybe to believe :/
and it useful for something? or is it just for marketing ‘we’ve more than other camera’…
