I spent the last month in Costa Rica field testing the Nikon D5 in comparison to the D4S, which I have shot with extensively since its release. Below I have listed are what I consider to be the top 10 new features of the D5. The most impressive update is the addition of 4K UHD video. To demonstrate this below you will also find a real world highlight reel of 4K video I shot of wildlife native to the jungles of Costa Rica.

Nikon has started massive cost cutting measures all over the world

Nikon has started massive cost cutting measures all over the world. They already canceled many of their rebates after expecting a significant sales and income drop in the next 12 months. Here are some of the tips/rumors I have been receiving in the past few days:

→ Nikon laid off almost everyone at Nikon Nordic (Sweden) in oder to centralize their European offices. They only have few sales people left. Update: Nikon Nordic also cut several Nikon ambassadors (Nordics = Sweden, Norway and Finland).

→ Update: Nikon also had a big reduction of staff in Brazil (mainly marketing) which is strange given the upcoming Olympic games.

→ Nikon canceled their sales commission program in the US (also know as spiff). Other companies still pay commissions and you can imaging how sales people will now start pushing other brands.

Nikon D500 lens kit is currently in stock UPDATED

As I reported last week, a second wave of Nikon D500 cameras has reached US stores. ~~The D500 lens kit is currently in stock at B&H~~. It seems that even the second shipment was not sufficient to fulfill all existing pre-orders. Future D500 shipments could be delayed even further due to the impact of the recent Kumamoto earthquakes in Japan.

Great news: you can now repair some Nikon grey market cameras at third party US repair facilities

The D7100, D610, D800, D810 and D4s DSLR cameras were recently added to Nikon’s list of bodies that are authorized for repair in the USA by Nikon authorized third party repair centers. This means owners of grey market bodies now have a means for servicing them in the USA. A reader already checked with the two largest repair centers (APS and C.R.I.S.) and confirmed that both have been supplied with all the necessary info/certification/parts for work on the mentioned models and that both will work on grey market bodies. There are currently 8 centers authorized to work on the D4s and 7 on the D810 – you can see a listing of them on this Nikon page (first select category, model and then you see the list of available repaid facilities):
