Photographing Kanarra Falls | Kanarraville | Utah

Photographing Kanarra Falls, Kanarraville, Utah by Nikhil Shahi ( Website | Blog | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | see his previous guest posts):

Every few months, I would come across a photo of this gorgeous waterfall in Southern Utah, nestled in a slot canyon with towering cliffs, bathed in striking reflected light. I had vowed to visit Kanarra Falls near Cedar City, Utah someday, and over the last two years, I finally got the chance to visit the falls not just once, but on four separate occasions.

Kanarra Falls, once obscure and only known to the locals, has gained tremendous popularity in the last few years, thanks to social media. In May 2018, to combat potential damage to the ecosystem and control crowds, the town of Kanarraville instituted a $12 per person fee to hike the falls. 150 tickets are issued each day with the popular Summer months sold out weeks in advance. The 3.8 mile round trip hike (to the Upper Fall) is considered moderately strenuous and can take between 2 to 5 hours to complete.

The Nikon Z9 is tough

I received this email from a reader (credit: Igor Todisco):

“Hello! If you are interested, I have an experience to share as an NPS member. My Nikon Z9 inexplicably fell off the tripod during a work session. A loud and dramatic fall. Bayonet detached, lens (14-24 2.8) detached, pieces of iron came out of the body. Yet the Z9 continues to work and after a bayonet change + a change of the memory card holder made by the NPS service, with 180 € I have the Nikon Z9 perfect again. 14-24 perfectly unharmed.”

Meike 35mm f/0.95 APS-C lens for Nikon Z-mount review

Meike 35mm f/0.95 APS-C lens for Nikon Z-mount review by Bill Hall (see his previous reviews):

I just got a Meike 35mm f/0.95 lens, and here’s what I think of it.

This is a manual APS-C lens. For full-frame cameras, the 50mm focal length has long been considered to be the ìnormalî focal length. Lenses with a greater than 50mm length compress the apparent distances in an image compared to our eyes, while a smaller than 50mm will expand them. Thatís for full frame cameras, but this is an APS-C lens. APS-C lenses have an apparent ìmagnificationî factor of 1.5 for Nikon cameras. That means that the compression factor for a lens on APS-C acts like the compression for a lens that is 1.5X the focal length. The result is that a 35mm lens on APS-C is actually the ìnormalî focal length.

Sigma did not announce its first Z-mount lens today

Sigma did not announce its first Z-mount lens today – they only released a new Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens for Sony E-mount and Leica L-mount. Of course, it is very easy for some to make comments and predictions after the official announcement (Monday morning quarterback). I went back to my previous posts where I clearly reported that I expect Sigma to announce new Z-mount lenses in 2023. The last report came from Nokishita via Digicame-info and indicated that the new 60-600mm lens will come together with a new Z-mount lens:

“Rumors are circulating online about Sigma’s next E-mount new product and Z-mount entry.”

It is unknown which will be announced first: the first Sigma E-mount lens to be released in 2023, or Sigma’s entry into Nikon Z-mount lenses”

I just wrongly assumed that both new products will be announced together and obviously this did not happen. My exact words were “The first Sigma mirrorless lens for Nikon Z-mount could be announced next week:

Nikon Japan announces price revisions and “open pricing” for some products

Today Nikon Japan introduced price revisions for some accessories (hot shoe covers) and “open pricing” for most Nikkor lenses.

My understanding is that Nikon will no longer enforce suggested retail pricing and will let retailers determine the final selling price, which in most cases will mean a price increase, especially for the newer, hard-to-get products. Please note that for now this strategy is officially announced only for the Japanese market. Here is the full text:
