RED ready to release a DLSR with video?

I think this rumor may have an impact on future Nikon models and that’s why I am posting it.

RED may be the third company after Nikon and Canon to release a DSLR with video recording capabilities according to its own CEO:

“I want to say that no one has any idea how incredible this announcement will be. Call this hype… please. I am quite sure that the announcement will be called a “scam”. Should be a lot of fun to hear the reactions. I can’t wait.”

The release date is November 13th. We shall see.

Nikon drops SB-800 flash

Thom Hogan has noted on his web site that Nikon SB-800 flash is now officially discontinued and Nikon USA has canceled all dealer back orders. Few weeks ago Best Buy was cleaning up its inventory and was selling the SB-800 dirt cheap – in some locations for $200.

Quick online check shows that Amazon still has it in stock for $319.95, Adorama for $314.95 and B&H for $314.95. If you were planning to get this piece of Nikon history, now would be a good time to do so. The replacement model SB-900 is currently selling for $415.

Black Silicon discovery could change digital photography

I guess the DSLR market will not be saturated any time soon… ISO 12,800 or more anyone?

“With the accidental discovery of black silicon, Harvard physicists may have very well changed the digital photography, solar power and night vision industries forever. What is black silicon, you say? Well, it’s just as it sounds. Black silicon. It’s what this revolutionary new material does that’s important, starting with light sensitivity. Early indications show black silicon is 100 to 500 times more sensitive to light than a traditional silicon wafer.”

Nikon SD digital rangefinder

This is an anonymous rumor I got from Japan – there is no way to verify the credibility of the source, but Nikon has done some limited edition series in the past (non-digital):

Nikon SD:

  • FF (35mm) digital rangefinder
  • Sensor/processing out of the D3
  • Full titanium interior/exterior body
  • Very compact/light – built for low light/discreet/art work
  • Retro styling, think SP meets 28ti meets.. Giugiaro
  • Very limited edition, 10,000 in total, 6.000 for domestic market ONLY. Strictly collector’s item (huge market here)
  • Only available as a kit with 31/1.8, 50/1.5 and 90/1.8
  • Possibly/likely separately a f/1.0/50mm at even more limited numbers and insane price level
  • Prices? mad… this is not a photographic tool, this is luxury. Expected to be close to US $13,000 for the ‘normal’ set but rumored to be a Leica killer in optical performance and handling
  • Same 1/1 viewfinder principle as the SP rangefinder
  • Center weighed or spot metering, manual and Av only
  • NEF RAW and Tiff. Jpg unsure….
  • Same High ISO performance as D3

Allegedly scheduled to be released to coincide with some important Nikon anniversary, though  have no clue what it could be…

Eyewitness report from PhotoPlus Expo

Eyewitness report (thanks AK, photo by MTW):

I was at the PDN (PhotoPlus Expo) show yesterday, and they were exhibiting the new Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4. However, they said that the lens they were showing was a prototype, not a production model, so they requested that people not take home any images from it.

If they don’t have a production model yet, that suggests (a) they won’t be shipping real soon, and (b) they may be wanting to change something about the lens before they ship it.

Also, they still have no idea about price or delivery date for the GP-1. They did not even have a demo unit.

Finally, I overheard one Nikon rep telling someone “Expect new cameras early next year.”

If you have any stories or pictures from the show and you would liket to share them, please contact [NR].
