Nikon Capture NX 2.2.7 and Camera Control Pro 2.9.0 are out

Nikon released new Capture NX 2.2.7 and Camera Control Pro 2.9.0 versions today.

Capture NX 2.2.7 changelog:

  • Support for RAW images captured with the D5100 has been added.
  • In some rare cases, when the Highlight Protection function under Quick Fix in the Develop section of the Edit List was applied to RAW images, edges around highlights were darkened.
  • When the Image Dust Off function under Camera & Lens Corrections in the Develop section of the Edit List was applied to reduce reflection of dust on the image sensor in images, the results of this dust reduction were sometimes noticeable.
  • When RAW images captured with the camera’s auto distortion control function enabled were opened, or the Auto Distortion function under Camera & Lens Corrections in the Develop section of the Edit List was set to Automatic for a RAW image, Capture NX 2 sometimes quit unexpectedly.
  • RAW images sometimes could not be opened, or, when attempting to open a RAW image, Capture NX 2 sometimes quit unexpectedly.
  • Mac OS X only – When an image was saved with Capture NX 2, time of the Date Created information recorded to Exif data was sometimes not correct.

Nikon D5100 hands-on review

After the unboxing video and size comparison, this will be my last Nikon D5100 post. I will continue to post quick hands-on reviews of the latest Nikon equipment.

My first impressions of the Nikon D5100: the camera is very compact  – it handles like a big point and shoot model (think Coolpix P500). The viewfinder is small, it appears even smaller than other DX bodies like the D300s for example. The AF points are actually dots, good that they are illuminated otherwise they will be hard to see. High ISO performance is very good for an entry level model.

The new direct LV and video record buttons are conveniently located next to the shutter release. The camera can be operated with one hand since most of the controls are located on the right side of the screen (only the menu button is located to the left of the display). The 921,000 dots 3.0″ TFT LCD is excellent (introduced to Nikon entry level cameras for the first time). Be careful – in night vision mode the images will look much better on the LCD than on your computer. In the short time I had the camera, I hardly found any need to use the swivel display, but I am sure many of you will find it helpful.

Here are some of the new effects introduced with the Nikon D5100.

Nikon D5100 vs. D700 size comparison

Several readers commented about the small size of the D5100. Attached are few images comparing the size of the D5100 to the D700.

The D5100 (5 x 3.8 x 3.1 in | 127 x 96.5 x 78.7 mm) is slightly  smaller than the D5000 (5 x 4.1 x 3.1 in | 127 x 104 x 80 mm). The weight of the D5100 and the D5000 is the same (19.8 oz | 560 gr). The D3100 is still the smallest and lightest DSLR in the current Nikon lineup (16 oz | 455 gr | 4.9 x 3.8 x 2.9 in | 124.46 x 96.52 x 73.66 mm).

One month after the earthquake in Japan

A month after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, retailers worldwide are now starting to acknowledge a shortage of Nikon equipment. The rolling power blackouts have meant no production of various components from glass to chips, and they’re expected to last into September, possibly longer.

Wynne Powell president and CEO of London Drugs, a chain of Canadian retail stores, today talked about Japanese companies like Nikon running out of stock (source).

“They don’t have months of inventory on hand, and it’s now starting to show”

“Nikon, which is warning of camera shortages this summer, is another case in point, Powell said. The company had a lens factory near the epicenter of the quake. The firm was able to repair the crack in the floor and get the plant operating again, but had to shut down after running out of a small part that was supplied by a local family business.”

In Europe Nikon stock of certain items were difficult to find even before events in Japan, now retailers have no idea when stock will become available.
