New Nikon Zf 45MP full-frame retro mirrorless camera for $2,000 sounds too good to be true – I am now skeptical

I still do not have a confirmation that a new Nikon Zf 45MP full-frame retro mirrorless camera for $2,000 will be announced tomorrow – this rumor just sounds too good to be true.

The latest tip I received indicates a 24MP sensor, dual memory cards, and an announcement later in August/September.

Usually, the lack of solid leaks and rumors indicated no official announcement anytime soon.

Nikon is also rumored to release a major autofocus firmware update for the Nikon Z6II and Z7II cameras alongside the new Zf.

The official release date of the Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens will be announced on August 17th

Nikon Japan will announce the official release date for the Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens on August 17th (the previously reported dpreview forum post was wrong).

I was told that the demand for this lens has been very high and the pre-order lists are very long. Yesterday I reported that Nikon Japan already posted a warning on their website: “Due to the large number of orders for the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR, it may take some time to deliver. So thank you in advance for your understanding.

Here is the translated release from Nikon Japan:

Update: the translation is not very clear – it seems that Nikon will announce the lens release date on August 17th.

Nikon announcement on August 2nd? (the latest Nikon full-frame mirrorless retro camera rumors)

The Nikon full-frame mirrorless retro-design camera (Zf?) I have been reporting for a while could be announced as early as next week (on or around August 2nd maybe?). I am still not sure about all the detail and the exact announcement date, but here are the latest rumors (contact me anonymously with tips):

  • August announcement (most likely first week of August?)
  • 45MP sensor (?) update: I think the 45MP sensor will be from the Z7II and not from the Z8. We shall see. I do not expect to see Z8 performance for $2,000
  • Improved autofocus compared to Z6II/Z7II
  • A few different lens kits/bundles will be available in the $2,000-$2,500 price range
  • Will come with a new SE lens One of the bundles will be with the Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 (SE) lens
  • Price for body only: $1,999
  • Very similar to the Nikon Zfc in terms of design/layout
  • Update: small LCD screen on top for aperture display
  • New 3rd function on the sub lever of the shutter speed dial (besides photo/video) for B&W mode
  • Has a little grip/bump like the Nikon Df (see the mockup pictures included in this post)
  • Single SD memory card slot
  • Better build quality compared to the Nikon Zfc
  • Fully articulating screen
  • Code name N2137

The Z8 is already in stock in most stores, so it makes sense for Nikon to introduce a new camera and keep the revenue stream up after the drop from the Z8.
