In the last days of 2017 I have nothing interesting to report, so enjoy a few Nikon related YouTube videos:

    I love the fact that D850 is a camera that can do anything.. just look at the content made by this camera shared in social media.. the diversity of genres is amazing.

    • I agree – I am doing stuff with the D850 that I never did before (time- lapses, slow-mo, stacked images). It was all possible before, but you had to put much more effort. The D850 makes it easy for lazy people like me 🙂

        That boat sailed with digital. We’ve all become lazy. We make more exposures because we don’t have to pay for film and processing and it’s easier than doing the work to get the perfect shot up front. Sitting at a table using Photoshop is a lot easier than mixing chemicals in a darkroom and waiting for a print to develop to see what changes you have to make for the next attempt.

        While there’s nothing that looks better than a true silver halide black and white print, I can’t ever imagine myself back in the darkroom. I salute those few who still do it. I’ll accept the “lazy” label.

        • yes, same here – just for fun I still shoot 3-4 rolls of film every year but I get back a CD with the scanned images… I cannot even get them properly developed…

          Your images would have been better back in the day, had you the luxury of unlimited bulk film, and second,third,fourth chances in the moment versus chimping at the frame number window instead of the LCD.. It has nothing to do with lazy. The basics of the capture are the same.

            Absolutely wrong decentrist. I had a bulk film holder which was a pain to use. I tossed it in my closet and never took it out again. One, it was way too heavy and bulky and the camera was not balanced; and 2) it forced one to shoot in many different lighting conditions, so developing the film is a specific way would be a compromise. Many great photographers worked with 36 shots, 24 shots, and even less on medium format and only one at a time on view cameras. I worked as a still photographer in film for years.

            Some of the basics of capture are the same: Composition. Knowing what shutter speeds to use and what diaphragm to open to as well as how to hold the camera are similar. But nearly everything else in digital capture is different today.

            I used to shoot differently depending on the light and the film used, and then I used to develop the film differently depending on the type of light I was shooting under.

            I could choose b&w negative film, color negative film, positive slides (both b&w and color and some which had to be shot under Tungsten lighting.) And each film required specific study and specific development (which would be manipulated depending upon the type of light and quality of light captured in the exposed film.) I would also change the manufactures selected ISO to one that I felt would look better depending upon lighting conditions.

            Today, the sensor you have is what you use for every shot. The sensor is your film. No thinking about which film to use. No need to really have more than one camera with you except as a convenience to to change lenses; or if you like the effects of different sensors.

            There was no auto ISO, no white balance (unless you covered windows and other light sources with gel filters) and there were often no second chances. A motor drive, at the fastest speed, allowed 5.6 fps, but they were heavy and when you carried three or four cameras with you, you thought twice about taking all those drives. Today people whine that 5.6 fps is too slow.

          The better the upfront shot, the less time at the computer. I work two jobs besides the occasional paid photo shoot, and don’t have unlimited time to adjust images. I also came from a film background in the 80s, so that discipline of composition is still there.

          I’m grateful to be still working in the centre of Amsterdam where my lab (SilverHands)is only a 7 minute bike ride from my office. The developing, the contacts, the prints, all first class handwork, and the scans come by email.
          I just received a slightly battered copy of Creative Camera Yearbook 1975, ten bucks through Amazon, the University of Texas at Austin library stamps still there, and leafing through it I realised once again how much I prefer 400 ISO b&w 35mm film to digital. But doing one roll in two weeks, the developing, the contacts, the scanning and the inevitable beautiful prints, it just gets too expensive compared to the expense already there with an 850, primes and LR…, and the occasional print.

        Right. I think Kai was a bit unclear. He seemed to be saying that the D850 would have been the camera of the year if it wasn’t for the Sony A7rIII, but he didn’t quite say that the A7rIII was the camera of the year either. Not that it matters what one person thinks because if choosing between those two cameras, the one that is best is the one that’s going to be the most intuitive and comfortable to use and that’s going to be different depending upon who the photographer is, the size of their hands, the cameras they’ve used before, etc.

        The weird thing is that in spite of his critical comments about Canon, which I (and I would guess everyone here) agrees with, Canon is still apparently doing a lot better in terms of sales than either Nikon or Sony. One interpretation is that brand loyalty may be more important than quality, although Nikon continually losing market share seems to indicate that there isn’t necessarily brand loyalty.

        I wish all of these videos would indicate what cameras/lenses they’re using to make the video. Some shots looked great and some looked really soft.

        Those Nikon D850 shots taken with a long exposure in almost near darkness were amazing.

          I have taken some shots where the foreground was a black silhouette, and in post processing I can pull out fine detail in wood grain from those shadows. I’ve only been back in the hobby for a year- all my prior experience was film/darkroom, and let me tell you I could NEVER pull that kind of detail out of shadows from film when I printed. Not a chance. Maybe the Sony is just as good, I have no direct experience with it. But the D850 is phenomenal in my opinion.

          Re:Canon – Nevermind what the nerds say, they are doing a lot of things that matter to the end users. Dual pixel AF is so important to the tens-or-hundreds-of-thousands of vbloggers out there. You don’t need 4K to get a few 100K followers on YouTube. But you need good video quality, nice colours and AF that works smoothly. Anyone who wants to do video and upgrade beyond a mobile phone, I’ll say “Canon” without any hesitation.

          Observe some of the BTS of those top-earning YouTube celebrities peddling cosmetics, fashion and whatnots. If they are not using mobile camera(s), it’s Canon(s). And if they have their own little crew doing the videography, it’s also Canon. Good colours and AF trump resolution. Canon has also become the gear of choice for entertainment startups and companies producing short video clips for publishing on YouTube.

          On the still-photo end, wedding and portrait photogs should be lighting their shots with strobes and lights anyway. So Canon’s perceived lag in DR does not bother them as much as gear nerds think it should. Differentiation now comes to things like reliable gear, lens selections, customer support (an ouch for Nikon).

          The EOS-M system is priced very competitively against competitors and lens selection is complete enough for 95% of “non-pro” users looking for a compact travel camera. EOS-M also outguns all the M4/3, Sony and Fuji competition in price-performance ratio. Just check prices of a Canon 22mm and 11-22mm against what the competitors are offering. I’ll rather recommend a casual user or beginner to pick up an EOS-M than any of the other brands.

          As of today, if anyone asks me to recommend a camera for causal or beginner use, I’ll say “Canon” 90% of the time unless the user has some specific requirements such as never ever using video. And even if they only do stills, I may still say “Canon” because of the great Canon colours.

          Nikon also probably has very little PR compared to Canon.
          In my country, there are ads and stores for Canon EVERYWHERE, even in small towns and big department stores.

          Nikon are hardly anywhere and mostly on big cities… zero ads.

          So its obvious that the majority of people would rotate towards Canon cameras.

          Other problems are PRICE…
          Canons are pretty close to US prices here.. Nikon prices are almost TWICE what it costs in the US.

    I dont believe any tech specifications and loud words i have heard same thing about d810,then i bought it and was disapointed with color render and skn tones which are much more worse than had d200 and worse than D3 had

    “nothing interesting to report” holds for the entire year. It’s Nikon’s 100th anniversary, and nothing aside of a new coating appeared that was more than a gradual “processing further” of known products. No Df2, no mirrorless, no new concepts, no answers at all to the threat of smartphones. Nil.
    To me, the D850 is not the camera of the year, but the Hasselblad X1D (some annoncement in 2016 doesn’t make it a camera of 2016). Or the Fuji GFX.

    Nikon filled a patent for components initializing in mirrorless that results fast startup.. but the mount they introduce has 12 contact pins (its actually 2×6). Its as many as Nikon CX has. Maybe they change the throat size, but reuse​ the Nikon 1 communication system.

      I wonder what percentage of Nikon patent filings for camera body and lenses actually appear in products that are for sale. I suspect nobody has counted, but some smart person might have a good estimate.

      And what is the average lag time between a Nikon patent and the product appearing on the market?

        I’d like to put that here too, but I thought nobody is interested in kit looking lens designs.
        Apparently Nikon wants to make its new 18-55 the slimmest 18-55 they’ve ever made.

          Seems to me that a large percentage of the lens patents that Nikon files that are very detailed are more of a patent of a SKU they plan to actually produce (and thus discourage counterfeit knockoffs of) rather than any kind of general technology patent.

          Nikon could use some slimmer/shorter lens designs, they produce a lot of bloated monsters these days. (24-70, 16-35, etc)

          I remember the days when 80% of their lens line – even the f/2.8 ones and some f/2.0 and f/1.4 ones – used 52mm filters..

              I might agree with you if you eliminated the concept of “perfection” and if weren’t for the fact that Nikon’s competitors oftentimes release as good or better performing lenses that are smaller/lighter than Nikon’s version.

              My impression is that a lot of people disagree about whether the optical performance of the Nikkor is better than the Canon. In fact, a lot of people right here on NR complained that it was even a step back from its predecessor in various optical respects.

              Regardless, they are most certainly in the same class of optics, but the Nikon is a monstrosity compared to the Canon. It looks more like a 200mm lens than a 24-70mm lens to me.

              (As a matter of fact it actually is longer and much heavier than both the Nikkor 180 f/2.8 AF-D, and the Nikkor 300 f/4 PF. It is an astounding 40% heavier than either of them.)

              Why you are obsessed with this outlier lens? Compare 70-200s, they can’t be smaller than what they are.

              Perhaps I should remind you that I simply mentioned that I thought it was excessively large, and you started the argument by suggesting it had to be that way because of “physics”.

              Yes it is an egregious example, but that is why I said in the first place that it would be nice to have a more reasonably-sized option. (The 24-120 VR could have been that lens for those who don’t need f/2.8, but its performance is nothing to write home about. Even the old 24-105 L Canon outperforms it optically from what I have heard.)

          I’m interested. I suspect that there are others. Even kit lenses are important, if they lead to significant sales and add to Nikon’s viability.

      “Numerous” firmware updates in less than one year does not inspire me any confidence. On the contrary, it only demonstrates to me the inability of Hasselblad to produce a really usable product before putting it on the market, and I find this behavior very indecent for a toy of this price.
