    “→ First red Nikon D5.”

    And hopefully last.

And man is it ugly! Looks like my little olly tg-4’s big plasticy brother. But at least, my tg4, I can hide underwater 🙂

    • lol 🙂

I don’t remember who did these, but the image I’ve saved of them goes back to late 2007. While most aren’t my taste, I think these were done well. As far as I remember, I think these were real and not just Photoshop mockups. IIRC. there were lots more of these. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/61feeeb4f261224453574818b5f7e2bfc0cb667636d2aaf560203960281c221d.jpg

The camo one is cool 🙂

        • nek4life

          I’d by a camo Nikon.

          • TwoStrayCats

            I’d go right by it.

      • All you need to do is add 100th anniversary print to the gray one and voila, you have your collectors piece. And save some money too.

How to make a D5 look like a Pentax entry level body 101.

Happy father day, enjoy your family time.

    • CaMeRa QuEsT

That’s exactly how I got smitten into the world of photography: by sneaking into my grampa’s study to play with his cameras, which he used entirely to document my upbringing. Wonder if my kids are doing the same thing with my cameras when I’m not around the house… Happy Father’s day to you all!

A great video about the new most powerful electronic microscope:

Those 10-20 samples are looking very impressive to me. Only a little bit of corner deterioration at 4.5 and then only when depth of field is being pushed kind of hard. Pity so few Nikon bodies take the AF-P lenses.

    • Captain Megaton

They’re okay I guess. Nothing technically bad, but images lack contrast and crispness.

Holding off a final opinion until some better samples come along.

      • CaMeRa QuEsT

If you take into account the focusing distance at which each image was taken (by looking@where the focusing point is located), then they all look ridiculously sharp and contrasty from corner to corner (given the DOF), especially for a $309 UWA. I’m definitely switching from my already very nice Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 to this new lens.

        • Captain Megaton

I’ve just noticed that the NEF files are available to download.

From what I can tell: Good overall, excellent in the center when stopped down, fairly distorted at the wide end, corners are messy wide open and imperfect even stopped down. Objectively, it’s what I was expecting and commensurate with or somewhat above the asking price. I was just hoping for a little more magic aka the 6.7-13 N1 nikkor.

(the sample files are really a long way from ideal – mostly shot straight into midday sky with severely underexposed foreground)

          • “fairly distorted at the wide end, corners are messy wide open and imperfect even stopped down”
This is becoming nikon’s hallmark lens design motto these days. For wide angles i.e.

          • Eric Calabros

            You haven’t tested 6.7-13 on a 24mp sensor.

            • Member

I tried but it just don’t fit on any of my 24MP camera bodies. 🙂

            • Captain Megaton

I could downsample the D5600 images to 10MP if it makes you happier, it wouldn’t change my observation that the N1 wide zoom has lower distortion, particularly in the middle of the zoom range, and better contrast and colors overall.

I don’t want to harp on this though – overall it looks pretty good and a very solid entry considering the price, size, and features.

    I want a Whore Red D820/850…please.

  • Spy Black

The 360-1200 is cheap compared to a 1200-1700mm. What incredible craftsmanship though. An era gone by.

    • EnPassant

If that 360-1200 had been $1.1k I would have bought it as it would look good together with its little sister, the 180-600/8 ED: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a7642bfc67ef32fc25919d2b2924df78f10332d6ff0ee629dca39cc36a02d957.jpg

Really wish Nikon (and Pentax, for that matter) would make some DSLRs dedicated to manual focus with interchangeable screens and proper huge viewfinders with high eyepoints so some of those old gems (and maybe some new ones) could really be put to use without compromises.

  • BukkakeComet

I want a custom color camera badly but a DSLR is the last thing I am going to trust someone opening and returning to its exact state of functionality before the coat of paint.

  • Nikon King

Not really impressed by the 8-15mm to be honest…14-24mm is a far more useful and sharper lens.

    • They are completely different animals. Maybe the 8-15 isn’t for you. My guess is it’s someone else’s dream lens.

    • Chris

Have a look at the 400FL, much sharper than the 14-24

  • Amir

peter griffin: Mama Mia!! I wonder who is gonna pay for that out dated, grandfathered Nikkor zoom 360-1200mm f/11 for $11K??Oh,ya,oh,ya..I called KEH camera store and they told me that they would pay only $500 for it,hehehehe…

  • EarlFargis

Any idea when the ‘released’ Nikon fisheye lens will actually be in stock in the U.S.?

    • It’s already shipping, but it is still out of stock.
