    Focus Distance: 5.0m vs. 4.4m
Nice, now I can focus on my cat’s eye from shorter distance

  • Plug

I suspect that a significant difference will be in balance, with the centre of mass further back increasing handlability noticeably.

Hello ! I would have expected a larger Maximum Reproduction Ratio with a smaller Minimum Focus Distance and same focal length ?

    • Russell Ferris

It must breathe to get that close

  • 3.8 kilos is the big for me – thats a significant improvement

    • Disqus-t

Wow, that is a whole another lens or camera body difference in weight!

Hi admin. Is the Nikon rumours forum down or something? Have not had access to it for days now… 🙁

    • No, the forum is up. Try to access it with another browser or clear your browser’s cache.

      • tobi

After resetting my cache I lost connection to the blog too for a bit.. now I am back here but still cant get access to the forum keeps saying timeout. tried windows, linux and android.. all not connecting to forum. Has the site blocked my IP ?

        • No, if I have blocked your IP, you wouldn’t see the blog either. I am sure the problem is on your end because I would have hundreds of complains by now.

          • tobi

I can get access to the forum using the free proxys ( but its slow and full of popups 🙁 ) can I send you my IP in an email to see if its blocked ?

            • I am not blocking IPs.

  • I was initially confused by the order reversal on this table relative to the 500mm comparison and the MTF ordering. Interesting to read though — maybe I’ll get to rent one of these beasts one day.

  • ckuklbac

I wonder what this would look like as a PF version?

  • neversink

Though I want to sell my 500mm f/4 here in Kenya and pick up the new one (due to the incredible MTF chart which beats out the 600mm chart) but the price tag is ridiculous…. Still need to test each lens….

I’m upgrading from the 500mm f/4G. I’m worried that I’m straying into the category of people my father used to describe as having more money than sense. But I’m looking forward to the weight reduction, the ability to turn off VR with a button, what appears from the MFT charts to be improved resolution, and the advertised improvement in VR and focus tracking. Also, I’ve found in the past that my expensive lenses have held their value well when I’ve decided to sell. On that score, my 500mm f/4G, as-new USA model, is for sale on eBay for $6295 to people with continental U.S. addresses. My user name there is gwhitehurst10. Looking forward to actual test charts and user reports on the new lens.

Looks very nice. Hopefully the prices on the older lens at rental stores drops. I would love to try this lens for a few hours for wildlife at BIF.
