Speed that changes everything

Nikon 1 cameras achieve a level of speed and accuracy that once was unimaginable, and the Nikon 1 V3 takes that performance even further. Capture thrilling views of sports, fast action and spontaneous moments with game-changing continuous shooting speed: 20 fps at full resolution with full autofocus performance. When using fixed focus, increase that burst rate to a mind-boggling 60 fps and capture sights other cameras may miss. The Nikon 1 V3's Hybrid AF System uses 171 AF points for contrast detection and 105 AF points for phase detection to lock onto your subject the moment it enters the frame with virtually zero lag on the camera's LCD display. Few cameras are better suited for fast action photography than the Nikon 1 V3.

Image quality that inspires

Nikon's CX-format CMOS image sensor is one of the most exciting innovations in image sensor design and the secret behind Nikon 1's unrivaled speed, image quality and elegant design. The Nikon 1 V3 pairs an enhanced 18.4-MP CX-format CMOS image sensor with Nikon's new EXPEED 4A image processor for spectacular detail and color rendering, blazing-fast speed and brilliant low-light performance. Shoot sharp, clear, noise-free photos and videos up to ISO 12,800—continue shooting in fading light long after lesser cameras have been put back in their cases. The Nikon 1 V3 delivers exhilarating performance that will invigorate your passion for photography. Its tilting touch display has virtually zero lag, making it easy to shoot at unusual angles. Combined with an outstanding Hybrid AF System, every fleeting moment can be captured with incredible precision and accuracy. With 171 contrast detect focus areas and the center 105 areas supporting phase detection AF, the V3 provides super-fast AF response and accuracy when capturing still images or HD video in addition to exceeding the AF abilities of many D-SLR camera offerings.

The Nikon 1 V3 also features elite imaging specifications that help ensure superior image and HD video quality and impressive low-light performance, including the addition of a high-resolution 18.4-megapixel CX-format image sensor and new EXPEED 4A image processing engine. Together, they help render true colors and incredible detail, whether shooting an exotic safari or the local swim meet. The V3 can also capture slow motion video at an impressive 120 frames-per-second (fps) in high quality 720p HD. Additionally, users can capture full resolution still images during video recording, rounding out an impressive and comprehensive stable of video features at the user’s disposal.

In another first for the Nikon 1 series, the V3 features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity*(2), helping users seamlessly share every unforgettable moment. Another innovative addition to the Nikon 1 Series is the V3’s new tilting, touch-panel 3-inch LCD monitor that allows photographers to compose brilliant images and HD video from various new angles. This thin and versatile monitor is a convenient tool for adjusting settings on the go, affording the user the ability to quickly trigger the shutter when capturing a photo or change the focus point when capturing video by simply touching the screen. Looks like a massive improvement over the V2 in all respects.

  • jenny

    Compressed 12-bit NEF (RAW) ?…..wow

    • stesk

      The same for the V1.

  • AlphaTed

I really wish Nikon 1’s flash is compatible with CLS.

    • stesk

      Wish again :)

      • AlphaTed

        I’ll keep on wishing man.

  • ulysse

Beautiful Camera, love the design. The grip is a very nice touch and seems to offer an extra wheel for aperture controls, but the LCD seems somehow flimsy. They should offer different packaging, I would love to see a V3+32mm 1.2 combo for 1199$ !

  • Mansgame

The sample pictures the “professional” photographer took in the youtube video look like they were taken in a very controlled environment and either hot lights or reflectors were used. You can see it in the hurdler’s eyes and lack of shadows.

Now I ask you, if this is meant to be a serious camera and not a toy, why do that? In the Olympics, do you see a crew of lighting assistants running after the runners with giant lights and reflectors? No. That’s why this is a useless toy.

  • http://www.gordonmoat.com/ Gordon Moat

I think the body designs now outnumber the lenses. So far still only one f1,8 lens, which is a shame because the wide aperture really helps in low light. Also, where is the flash adapter to use a normal flash, or trigger a radio trigger? Nikon is repeating the mistakes of the DX system.

  • Neopulse

Looks good the camera, although surprised they didn’t release a new FT- adapter? Think a lot of users want one to use it with their DX/FX lenses.

    • Ken Elliott

Why do we need a new FT adapter? I own the existing FT and I see little about it that could be improved.

      • Neopulse

The only beefs I have are that autofocus works with AF-S lenses only. Meaning only manual AF with AF-D lenses (my old 80-200mm wouldn’t work on it unfortunately) and not sure is manual focusing is comfortable with this camera in comparison to the Sony a7. And the second thing is AF points. The LAEA4 has many more AF points while the FT-1 only has the center point :-/

Note: And as I recall not too long ago they added AF-C to the adapter so that is a plus.

        • stesk

But the AF-C is so fast when you compare with a D-SLR. The AF-C is only fast with 1N lenses.

        • Ken Elliott

Now I understand. Almost all my lenses are AF-S, as I switched out almost all my AF lenses for AF-S.

In Sony’s case, the LAEA4 has the phase detection autofocus in the adapter itself – it uses a semi-transparent mirror. The Nikon FT1 is an extension tube with electrical contacts at each end. All AF if performed by the camera. But you are correct – they could build one with a focus motor inside – along with a battery. Doubt they’d do that. I’m sure they’d rather you buy updated lenses.

          • Neopulse

Yeah exactly my point, you gotta update your lenses to use it properly :-/ I really like the 80-200mm AF-D lens with it myself. It would be good to have a similar lens adapter like the one Sony has with the multiple AF points and built in motor.

  • Ken Elliott

I’m surprised Nikon didn’t style the EVF like an F3 pentaprism. As it is, it looks like it was just stuck on by a third-party manufacturer. Here’s a quick PS job to illustrate.

  • Gpereir4

Whats the flash shoe situation? Did they end up going with the standard mount?

    • http://www.gordonmoat.com/ Gordon Moat

Same previous Nikon 1 flash mount. On the far left is a pop-up flash. An add-on flash cannot be used when the viewfinder is in place.

  • KnightPhoto

Nikon Canada has a body only price – $899, as compared to the entire kit here which is $1299.

Perhaps implies a USA body-only for around $799.

  • Roger Martin

I will only get one if it has consecutive 4GB sement recording like Panasonic.
1080P 60 is great on the D5300 but the 10 minute limit is much too short

  • Eric Bowles

I’m looking at this a little differently. What other camera can deliver 18 MP images at 20 fps? AF is already pretty good and this is an upgrade. This camera will produce 12×18 inch native prints – that’s better than images in most magazines and books you’ve purchased.

The V3 is different. It’s the third generation of a new technology that promises lots of benefits. You can nit-pick features, but this is a remarkable camera for $1200.

This is not a compact camera and should not be in that price range. It’s a small, powerful, interchangeable lens camera. Its a viable part of my bag that includes a D800E and the other top Nikon lenses. If I want to photograph professional golf tournaments – I want the V3. For birding, the V3 and new 70-300 makes a great kit. If you want a good travel camera – the V3 is a great choice. If you need silence – such as during a wedding ceremony or a prayer – the V3 is the choice. There are plenty of other applications.

There were a lot of photographers that were slow to move from film to digital. There are plenty that do not use a camera phone. But mirrorless cameras provide a lot of advantages and you’ll be using one in the future in place of your DSLR.

    • Chris Weller

      Agreed on all points!

  • http://photojht.com Jonathan Truong

looks like they listened to people’s feedback and responded…..if only they did this for their dslr lineup.

    • stesk

They didn’t listen. Who has asked for a higher speed, more MP, microSD card and an optional EVF???????
For this price you can find other alternatives.
However who says you have to buy a new camera every year???
How much can you improve your photography with a new model???
