Put this lens on a J3 and you have probably the best low cost dedicated portrait setup. It is not going to beat a D600/D800 with the 85mm f/1.4 or even the f/1.8 for depth of field (f/3.2 equivalent) but it might well be better on some other measures.

If you were taking passport photos for a living, not a bad choice. Could work well for street photography too.

But the price is rather higher than I think most were expecting. The 35mm f/1.8 DX is only $200, I think people were expecting something more in that range.

    • Andul

      “low cost”? ^^

    • rearranged

hmmmmm…. how about a used d90 with a new 50mm 1.8 G and a new 85mm 1.8 G? Or a used d5000 if you want a rather modern sensor? This set would be cheaper than the j3 with the 32 1.2… Nah, these are propably too oldscool. ;) Better stick with the new hi-tec toy. For 250€ the lens would be buyable just as the v1 is now buyable 250€ used. Everything else is ridiculous.

      • tertius decimus

I own D5000 + 50 mm f/1.8G combo. Good for portraits but nowhere as good as full frame setup. Miss those film days.

        • rearranged

that for sure, but it’s still cheaper….

    • Mr. Mamiya

It’s not exactly cheap, but on the other hand many people choose an 85/1.4 over an 85/1.8, stupid too.

I must say that I love my V1 since day one. It’s a fun little compact system that works amazingly well, and this lens is a great addition, albeit being a bit pricey. I’ll use my Zeiss 35/2 instead.

    • Mike

D3x00 with a 50mm f1.8 is much, much cheaper. Even with a 50mm f/1.4 it would be cheaper.

    • Can’t Believe It

And you could probably make a tidy sum using it to do Facebook, LinkedIn, and dating website portraits as well. It’s the perfect size for that kind of thing. And think of the baby portraits you could do when you don’t have to worry about dropping a big old D4 into the crib!

This lens is not at all intimidating, so it would be much easier to get people to relax and smile; it will be even better when the special Hello Kitty edition comes out. Think of it, pink lens on a red or blue body, pull that out and you can easily get the lighthearted portrait shots that people will want to buy.

You guys need to think of this lens in terms of the freedom it will bring you–no more monstrous lenses and fat, ugly camera bodies.

      • Jorge

I have the freedom. I leave my Nikon D800, D700 and all the glass at home and only schlep my Fuji X-E1, 18-55 and the 35 1.4 Easy peasy. Done.

        • Can’t Believe It

Jorge, could you answer a serious question. How would you personally rate the pictures from the Fuji in comparison to those from the D800? If a D800 with the 24-70 is 100, what would you give the Fuji and the 18-55? Is it 90 percent as good as the D800? 70 percent? 50 percent? I know that there are a lot of variables, but overall, what’s your opinion.

  • Spy Black

    $25 for a lens hood?

    • lorenzo

I wouldn’t give more than $25… for both camera and lens – if new!

      • hg

you are cheap..or just too “awesome” I guess

    • rerranged

      Probably it is included.

    • http://micahmedia.com/ Micah

      Wow, pretty damn reasonable actually.

    • PhotoAl

      It’s included

  • MB

One more product from Nikon that will not sell …

  • Incessant Troll

shipping implies that someone is going to buy it. not going to happen until it sells for $500 max

  • Santiago Villamil

Hmm I want that lens even before it was released. Perfect for concerts, portraits, street, low light. But I’m sure it will low its price.

  • PhotoAl

Looks great, can’t wait to play around with it.

  • HotDuckZ

Price of small things is too much. :P

  • Pablo Ricasso returned

It looks like they could have made that lens a lot smaller.

    • Fiatlux

It has a SWM AF. This add bulk – see the latest AF-S primes for FX bodies.

    • PhotoAl

I haven’t handled one in person yet but judging it by the size of the J3, this lens is tiny for a f/1.2 lens. I’ll play with one next week but I’m sure I’m going to be surprised by it’s small size.

You can put lipstick on a pig

You can put a 500hp engine in a corolla

Or you can put this lens on a Nikon J1

    • Can’t Believe It

I would LOVE a 500hp motor in my Corolla. That would be a blast! It would be just like back in the 1960s when people installed Chevy V8s into motorcycles.

  • JPaul Johnson

Ordered mine weeks ago. Can’t wait.
