Oh no they didn’t…

Today Nikon posted this on their Facebook page:

"A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Do any of our facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses? Which is your favorite and what types of situations do you use it for?"

what a fucking retarded thing to say, Nikon.

    • cdrross

What else would they say when all they have coming up is a single DX lens release and still no real camera upgrades in either DX or FX for the foreseeable future!
      This SUCKS!!!!!

      • A Thought

        calimero…

        • Tom

          Calimari!

          • Calibrator

            Caligari, The Cabinet of Dr.

      • Ryan

Oh how quickly people forget. Why do you think the camera/lens are delayed……maybe a huge Tsunami? Cut them some slack and go troll somewhere else.

        • nikon

          yep

        • Mock Kenwell

Did the Tsunami sew their mouths shut? No. Then tell us when to expect the FX for shit’s sake. We can be reasonable, but their random upgrade schedule is frustrating.

    • didaskalos

Ah, come on, Glum. Nikon’s statement was retarded, but your characterization of it is also, well . . . .

  • http://engtopics.ru/ Sam

I am sure it is just one person’s fault and not Nikon’s opinion.

    • teko

His job is to sell and promote products. It’s understandable. All marketing talk is like that.

  • http://www.spark-creative.co.uk/photography.html Mark Astle

Jesus you lot, lighten up. Who really cares about this, it’s just a tiny slip on a Facebook page. Really must be a slow news day. Go out and take some pictures.

    • A Thought

      +100

  • oh dear…

time to move on to hassys…

  • Marcin

    They should write:
“Photograph is as good as used equipment. Man, usually called photographer, is completly redundant.”

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/diverso/ Eduardo Romero

If that’s true then we should all move to Leica!

      Leica is overrated

  • ThatCanonGuy

So Nikon are trying to get people NOT to buy their new mirrorless or something?

  • David La Roche

    this makes me crankypants.

  • Nik

Thank God! I’m not a facebook fan – so they are not talking about me!

  • broxibear

Whether you agree or disagree, think it’s important or irrelevant, think it’s funny or stupid, posting this line on the Nikon facebook page has an effect. That effect is hundreds of negative comments and negative articles on various websites.
Nikon just spent millions on marketing for their new mirrorless to create a feeling about their brand, the negativity across the net caused by these comments are not going to help brand Nikon they are damaging it.
They were very quick to put out a statement when Reuters hinted a Nikon mirrorless was about to be launched, I’m surprised they haven’t removed this from facebook yet.

    • broxibear

P.S. Just to give you an idea of how quickly this has gone viral here are a few links…

broxibear, I think I need to hire the same marketing company for NikonRumors :)

    • Midnight Lost Child

I agree that this statement hurts Nikon and someone must have fallen asleep in the marketing department. Unless Nikon is now trying to brand itself as a gear head brand and start trash talking the works of all the great photographers that never used a Nikon product.

  • Jabs

Photography is about the IMAGES and not the Social Media madness.

Here is an example of WHAT Photography is all about.

    http://cdn-7.nikon-cdn.com/en_US/IMG/Images/Learn-And-Explore/2011/Nikon-World/Summer-2011/Farther-Out/Media/lizard-woman1.jpg

When you can produce this type of an image, then we can talk!

    Get your focus right!

    • Nik

I love the lizzard in the red dress!

      • Jabs

        LOL.

        Yeah – funny too.

  • Brian Davis

I know tons of people using top of the line gear and producing crap. I was out-shooting them with a D90 and some cheap Tamron lenses!

If it’s all about the gear, why doesn’t Nikon actually put some fast AF motors in their prime lenses or release some new pro camera bodies instead of this mirrorless bullshit?

  • http://www.joeythephotographer.com Joey

Really Nikon! That’s just insulting. I use a couple of 40-year-old primes and a Tamron.

  • joe b low

After having announced the biggest piece of FAIL in recent years, I’m sure they need to shift focus towards something else. Even Nikon must see how putting out an overpriced powershot contender is just extreme hardcore failing.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilovewalkman/ Abhinav

    Nikon apologies

  • Ken

If Nikon had said everyone was a fantastic photographer and you didn’t need Nikon so much they were just the medium used to show your wonderful expressions in print or screen you’d all complain about that too..quit complaining, as someone said earlier go out and ‘shoot or shut up’. Another day passes by and more wasted waffle from the trollers.

  • Simon

What Nikon says it true, try to take a good photo with a crap lens, or paint a picture with a brush without good bristles.
A masterpiece is made from good tools!

    • Oly

Right, so Picasso’s work is crap compared to modern paintings because his equipment was ancient, right?

Ansel Adams photos are crap compared to anything taken with a D3….

I don’t think so. Not only is beauty in the eye of the beholder, but without a creative eye and talent, a photographer will never be great no matter how good the equipment they use is. Same goes for painting, I can spend top dollar on painting equipment, but still be horrible at it because I suck at painting, whereas an incredible artist can buy a kids painting set and make something leaps and bounds better than I can.

  • D800 postponed …

    See “D800 postponed until Apil 4, 2012!” at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&thread=39471953
That seems to be a good indication.

  • its called marketing

seriously? Who cares. Have you seen all of their other ads? Claiming that you can take professional photos if you just buy the newest camera.

All of you are taking this way too seriously.

  • Jabs

    WARNING – WARNING – WARNING !!!

There is no such thing as bad publicity.

You got snowed or fooled and look how this has gone viral.

Got you talking and posting, eh?

And then bigger idiots are now comparing large sensor compacts to this smaller sensored camera – LOL

    OWNED!

    By Nikon too!

Outrageous statements designed to go viral and then when it does, you again complain.

Lifeless and now clueless too – LOL.

What did they say – There IS a sucker born every minute!

    • JY

I love how they all feel insulted with the comment, yet most of these people are the one who keep coming back and whinge about the lack of the new DSLRs announcement :)

    • Mock Kenwell

So wrong. This is a flat out mistake. There’ll be a retraction. Watch.

      • Jabs

        LOL!

Yeah and how do you retract a viral comment Dr. Who?

Do you go back in time and fix it Mr. Spock or is that possible?

        Where’s you DeLorean bub?

Riding to the rescue on a silver horse, eh???

LOL – you figure it out Sherlock!

  • Mark

I always say: “Loads of gear no idea……….”

  • Mo

My gear is Nikon F-601 with Tamron Lens and Holga 120N with black tape and rubber bands.
According to Nikon’s statement, I’m doomed.

  • Michael Devonport

What I picked up on was this statement, “A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses”. Tell me Nikon Rumor fans, how many of you are women photographers who finds this offensive? To me that statement was really dumb.

  • fiod
  • Roakaka

“A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses”

So basicly what they’re saying is to avoid the Nikon 1 cams? :-)

  • jk

All of you are complaining but then at the same time you are also complaining about no new releases.

    So what is it then?

    • Roakaka

That comment made absolutely no sense at all. What you are saying is that you can’t complain at more than one thing at the time? luls

  • Anna

Let’s not forget that all photographers are male.

  • scurvy hesh

    Pats F4 loaded with XP2

    • Jabs

      LOL@ patting F4 with XP2

Use instead Neopan 100 and filters

      • http://www.dungbeetle.com.au/ Scurvyhesh

I like to use true B&W film but I get C41 processing for almost free. For .99 cents a roll and 6 rolls on a disk @1500 pixels wide for $2.99. More than enough for internets and if I want to make a print I have a negative!! If you are in the Seattle area its the Target in Northgate. I want to spread the word and get people using it before they decide they dont want to do wet lab anymore.

        • Jabs

          @Scurvyhesh

I was just teasing the person, as long time film and now digital shooter here.

I am familiar with both the C41 process Ilford XP1 and newer XP2 as used them a lot plus they saved me lots of frustration especially in smaller towns without real B&W Labs. I now just had to run around the Mall for about an hour while the low paid person figured out what they did WRONG – lol.

Sometimes people would screw things up and you get sepia colored prints instead of B+W or someone goes – Sorry sir, but we messed up your prints and threw them away, so we have to refund you or will not be charging you.

And you fly into a rage or shock and then ask – where are my negatives?

THEN, they sheepishly bring you your prints and then say – We did not know that you could print Black and White film in color chemistry or on color machines plus we even checked our machines and called Fuji Labs and then even re-calibrated our machines, but your photos were still B+W.

          Sorry sir!

Lol as this actually happened to me on several occasions!

For real B+W in B+W chemicals, I preferred Ilford Delta, Fuji Neopan and Agfa 25, but most of that has been replaced by newer emulsions and newer names. Tried T-Max but hated it, as most of the developing Labs screwed it up and then blamed you as it was new to them then – ouch! T-Max reminded me of Kodachrome in its’ response too. Sort of like Kodachrome without the colors added to it. ISO 3200 though was fun back then – spoiled shooters today don’t know what they ‘missed’ back then with film – LOL! – Yeah right they say – you can have it.

  • Worminator

It’s true. However politically incorrect it might be to say so.

People using compacts, or low end dSLRs with the F3.5-5.6 kit zooms are, once they get to a certain point, limited by their equipment.

No macro. No real shallow DOF photos. And the moment you try to do something that requires fast response you are left high and dry.

Of course running out to buy a D3s and 24-70/2.8 does not make you a good photographer. Also, a cheap manual focus prime lens from the 1970’s can hold it’s own against a $2000 AFS zoom lens. So “good” does not have to mean “expensive”.

But it is a fact that if you took away the 3x zoom 1/2.5″ compacts from people and gave them a V1 and said “go”, they would in aggregate get much better results…

  • http://www.djpaphotography.com John Yu

o..that’s why uncle bob or newbie with fancy camera is stealing us wedding photographers bussiness. because we are not as good as they are because we don’t carry the heaviest camera around to break our neck. i much prefer lighter body like D300s or even D7000 that the flagships when you need to have it on your neck all day long.

  • crizno

If photography is based ONLY on talent, then why is everyone so excited about new equipment? Just keep using your old D100; I’m sure your talent will make those 6.1 megapixels explode out of that craptastic CCD sensor.

when i start reading this article

  • Hhom Togan

Sincerely if you are “offended” by this you REALLY need to get a life… ASAP because there are real things to worry about and there is this kind of stuff which is irrelevant to anyone’s life.

  • MARK

I always say: All the Gear no idea……………….

  • http://www.photobymarkdavey.com mark

Of course with film life is easier I took portraits for a golden wedding a month ago with a Rolleiflex from the 1950s. Better than almost any digital I could have chosen. Been using the FM2N a lot this year, D700 is nice but somehow a camera that cost me a tenth the price is more pleasing to use. You can get a lot of film and processing for the spare £1500.
There’s no such thing as a bad camera, just apply the old rule “f8 and be there……….”
I run a course, every student on the current intake apart from one tell me they use Green Auto mode (Idiot mode) on their dslr equipment – so why do the manufacturers bother with all the other controls.
    I could go on……..

  • Nikon User

Some of you people need to crawl out of your mother’s basement and get a life or something. Many of you wouldn’t know a good photograph if it bitch slapped you in the face. But, you are bitching about a marketing guys absolutely minor snafu, if that. Ever read a golf industry ad?

I will also bet the ones complaining the loudest have pocket cameras. Go troll somewhere else, morons. The F&$king world today is full of jackasses with keyboard diarrhea all the while, they have their heads firmly shoved up their assholes.

Next time you complain, post your best picture so we can wet ourselves laughing. That should shut you clowns right up.

  • http://ThePhotoExperience.com Mike Dougherty

While a good lens is not essential, it sure helps, especially depending on the type of image you are trying to produce and the experience level of the the photographer. Even the old masters used some pretty good equipment. In fact, when I go to Yosemite, I still see photographers using great equipment (4×5, 5×7, 8×10) that is 50+ years old.

  • Ren Mockwell

Sincerely all those complaining and whining about what was written there: you are all really sissy… if something written affects you so much you need to get your head examined by a shrink, it is really idiotic for you to feel “offended” by something like this, there are in life A LOT of things more important than this crap.

It is PATHETIC that you whine, cry and let your emotions flow by something like this hahahaha :P…

    Silly dummy-dumbs :)

  • http://davidgadreauphotography.ca David G.

They are selling cameras and camera equipment, not photo’s or photography services, so of course they’d come up with something like that.
