Vote for the “Imagine the Nikon D4″ contest winner

I received a total of 69 entries for the “Imagine the Nikon D4″ contest where you can win a ThinkTankPhoto Airport Airstream roller. I decided to allow readers to vote on all 69 entries instead of me selecting the top 20. All entries can be seen on flickr. Simply note the picture number (#) in the title and vote for that number (for example if you like "Imagine the Nikon D4" contest (#67)" you will vote for #67). The poll is embedded after this slideshow of all 69 entries:

The poll will close on August 19th at midnight (US Eastern time).

#44 … I want a bigger screen on the back to see more details

    • Posted August 15, 2011 at 8:29 am | Permalink

Oh boy, this was a tough one. My favourite was #26 — Broxibear’s second entry. I ended up voting for Jürgen Pfeiffer’s FM3a (#11) since he was the first to come up with a minimalist Nikon. By the way he arranged the buttons on the back of the camer I’d say he must be an absolute genius.

I love the FM2 concept and idea and have been talking about it for a couple of years now. I just think it will be a $2000 camera.

It’s actually a perfect way for Nikon to continue to make use of the 12 MP sensor.

Imagine a FF 12 MP FE/FM body with no in body focus motor (should still be able to drive AFS lenses ie… d5000).

This should be Nikons answer to all the retro throwback micro 4/3rds sensor compacts……they could even do 2 versions. One with DX one with FX. Same FE/FM style body (prism and shutter/mirrorbox design issues with this though right?)

Would be a perfect compliment to my old AIS 20 f2.8 / 50 f1.8 and Tokina 90 f2.5 for a compact 3 lens travel kit.

      @The invisible man

Yeah, I voted for your version of the elusive D4 plus the D4X and D4XV (2k to 4k video), but alas it vaporized or got lost somewhere between reality and the ‘nethers’, so perhaps you materialize and then we will laud you with a 48megapixel taser (lol) and make you now – VISIBLE.

EPIC transmission fail – lost in another dimension or maybe clueless to us inferior earthlings – so said the ROBOT – - -> what an eenteresting monster or are you merely a PUNY carbon life form and is that your communication device – TAKE me to your leader.

BUT my leader is invisible – POINTS to an iPhone – OK, says the alien invader – I’ll take FIVE – so you poke him in the eye(s) with your five fingers and it kills the dimwit – LOL!!!

      Next:

You now becoming ‘visible’ makes your formerly adoring wife go -Uuuuuuuugh.

Cover him up or worse – WHO IS THAT?

Be vewwy, vewwy, vewwy careful – Elmer to Bugs !

You might get your wish for and it kills ya – LOL!

My name is ‘MUD’ and MUD backwards = or spells DUM – ok

What does ‘invisible’ backwards mean or spell ???

-OR- what is the antithesis of invisibility?

Reality or dementia – dreams or being positive?

      Let me stop!

Invisible as in maybe – one does not count or an undercover agent, sleeper, Web site owner and BORED, as in waiting on sales or such – got it???

but actually a horrible idea. swivel screens are so easy to break. not built for rugged field usage at all. the d3 series were known for being especially well built. weak swivel screens would compromise it, while the screen would still be too small to justify it versus an external shoe mount large screen lcd.

      • jerl
        Posted August 15, 2011 at 2:14 pm | Permalink

Well, I did say interesting, not practical. Typically the D* models don’t even have a pop-up flash, a rotating screen would be completely out of the question.

  17. Posted August 14, 2011 at 9:30 pm | Permalink

Whoever designed the D3 has a serious self esteem problem. What a totally impractical camera to take anywhere. (This is not sour grapes. I have one and it’s a love/hate relationship.) There’s no reason it has to be that big and heavy to house a sensor 1 x 1.5 inches. Ludicrous.

Even the D700 is oversize and overweight. I want the smallest, simplest camera I can get. A ruggedly built D7000-sized camera would be perfect. The only bell/whistle I care about is that it should have a high resolution articulating screen that’s as large as it can be without causing the camera to be bigger.

Alas, there’s no chance. Testosterone rules and the D4 will be another monster. I will sell my D3 and get whatever the followup to the D700 is.

Personally I really like the D3…it’s got a real purity to it.
I’ve never had an issue with the size, fits my hands where smaller bodies don’t… each to their own I guess.

      • Posted August 20, 2011 at 8:53 pm | Permalink

        Hi Broxibear –

I’m glad you are comfortable with your D3. And there’s no doubt it’s a magnificent bit of workmanship. And, I never said it wasn’t beautiful. It is. When you use one, you feel the rock solidness of it. Certainly inspires confidence.

And, by “designer”, I did not mean the person who decided how to make it look beautiful. I meant the person who made the decisions that made it so gigantic.

As you said, “each to their own”. I can appreciate the D3, but as a working tool, I find I grab the D7000 instead any time I have to either be in public (so as not to make a spectacle our of myself) or when I have to carry my kit any real distance.

I’ve been working with both size of pros & semi-pros cameras from Nikon and the only thing I could complain would be the weight of the Dx compared to the Dx00.

The handling is far better, having a D300 (or D700) with a grip doesn’t compare to a D3, s or x, because the commands are further away from your thumb, and it’s doesn’t feel as solid, really.

I have had the D200 slip twice from my hands (lucky I had the strap around my wrist both times). This never happened with D2h, D2Xs and D3s. But at the end of the day, I do feel my arms sore :-)

Even with a 50mm on it I’d rather shoot with my bulky D3s. I have big hands but the D300 is a backup, nothing more, I really like the size of the D3s as it is now, it’s great to grab it tight when needed and not have all my fingers on top of each other (I got my hands on a D3100, ouch. Could’nt hold it !)

Every Dx Press brochure from Nikon features a Giugiaro feature, a page talking about the design, check it out, page 26:

Personally, I am tired of all the wimpy people complaining about the SIZE of an already low weight camera.

TAKE some vitamins – get a life – get some BICEPS – some SKILL

      GET a spine BUB!

Nikon has a traditional size and feature function that PROS love, including me.

GO GET an iPhone or other such trendy devices and then ATTACH a 200F2 or a 600 F4 to it, or even an OLD 50-300 F4.5 Ed zoom – LOL (It has 95mm filters too)

      BUY a Sony NEX!

Idiots calling for tiny USELESS cameras are morons or ‘complanicons’ (lol – Transformer reference)- GO BUY a D3100, D5100 or a D7000 – as you probably DO NOT get the purpose of a D3 or D3s.

I really detest these ‘macro-NERDS’ fixated on the smaller is better mantra – GET REAL – LIFE is not what YOU want, but what YOU make of it based upon what is in front of YOU = reality.

Dr. WACKO to his Frankenstein ‘creation’ = Ahhhhh – I have ‘created’ da perfect ‘human being’ – JUST before it kills him – Deserves it too, as an idealistic moron.

WANT small – wait on the leetle bitty CoolPix Pro line and leave the man sized Nikon PRO bodies to us men or at least to the real ones not afraid to or unable to carry a five to six pound load – HELLO, a 5lb bag of sugar is easy to carry all day!

Sorry to be rude, BUT tired of this mindless dribble here about downsizing.

GET an ‘artsy-fartsy Leica’ and be done with it.

Ok, I don’t know where Peter/admin is usually he’s pretty quick in returning my emails so I’m just going to post this.
I haven’t got an image of the D4 itself, but what I do have is a couple of images taken using a Nikon D4.
Lets not go into how I found them but here’s the exif data as shown on two images
    http://i.imgur.com/6EVAO.jpg
    http://i.imgur.com/khoL2.jpg
The images are on a blog/site testing HDVR panoramas, most of the exif data on the other images has been censored, but for whatever reason they left two images with the camera data…the camera being a Nikon D4.
The images were taken in early January according to the exif data. Personally I think they just forgot to censor the exif data in those two, or they did it on purpose. I don’t see any reason for them to be faked since they were posted in a very obscure place.
I don’t know if it’ll be taken down but here is the site itself, http://www.hdvr.org/xe/index.php?document_srl=49272 use your own exif data viewer to check if you want ?

Did you realize that 6000X3000 = 2:1 ratio, while FX is not that ratio (36mm x 24mm roughly = 3:2).

Hmm – a video or cinematic frame grab, maybe.

Nikon must be giving us 2K Cinematic video or have many more ratios like we have in Cinema, Pro Videos?

6000X3000 DOES NOT point to 18megapixel BUT points to a higher native resolution DROPPED down to 2:1, perhaps.

        Eagle eye here!

      Hi Broxibear,

The original-size file is here: http://www.hdvr.org/xe/files/attach/images/2958/272/049/0495.jpg

It is an 18mp equirectangular 360×180 degrees panorama stitched out of several images. They always have a 2/1 aspect ratio. But it doesn’t necessarily mean the D4 file is 18mp.

As we know, a 3/2 aspect 18mp D4 file would be something similar to 5212 x 3472 px of Leica M9, but not 6000 x 3000 px. Still that pano could have done out of 18mp D4 images, who knows ;)

I really wonder if the D800 will be 16,18, 20, or 24mp. And whether it will have a 100% viewfinder. There is not a trace of info leaked yet :(

      • broxibear
        Posted August 15, 2011 at 3:45 pm | Permalink

Hi Landscape Photo how’s it going?
Thank for the info, I don’t know if it’s from a D4, as I was saying to Peter it seems an odd place and subject to fake the exif data.
Personally I was always leaning towards the D4 and D800 being 18MP. The reality is that all the 100% corner comparisons at 1600 iso that have infected various review sites have no bearing on the reality of taking images…it’s a device to convince people to buy the new model.
I’m not in the market for a D4, D800, D400 or mirrorless. My D3 does everything I ask of it, and it does it beautifully…the mirrorless is too little too late as I bought a competitor.
It’ll be interesting to see what nikon bring with their new cameras but I won’t be lusting after one…unless it comes with a free Esperanza Gomez (NSFW) lol.

Sorry Peter I know this is a bit of a double post, my fist post is awaiting moderation ? I want to get it on nikonrumors before it’s picked up by another site…and it’s 3:33am here and I need some sleep lol…

The exif data also shows a 18MP camera.

    • Posted August 14, 2011 at 10:54 pm | Permalink

Could it be that the images are stitched and this is why they are 18MP?

    • Posted August 14, 2011 at 11:13 pm | Permalink

Yes, I really think that two images were stitched together since this is a panorama shot, this explains the 18MP. The Nikon D4 part can easily be manipulated.

        I know why, they used two D2 cameras. D2 + D2 = D4
        :-)

      • Posted August 15, 2011 at 7:06 am | Permalink

1:2 aspect ratio strongly suggests the two images have been stitched rather than being SOC.

Good attempt , but this probably is a fake .

I just think it’s an odd thing to want to fake, If you’re going to fake something like that then why make it near impossible to find the images ?… you’d want to post it somewhere more public.
The website’s there so decide for yourself, I think I said it was Japanese earlier but it’s Korean.

Early january? Clearly stitched stuff! No way this could possibly be taken by a D4.

            Hi Victor Hassleblood,
Even if it’s clearly stiched as you say could it not be images taken on a D4 that have ben stiched ?
I’m not saying it was a retail ready D4 in January but I am sure they were testing before then…as I said decide for yourselves.
I’m only the messenger…If I come across anything else I’ll post it.

I’ve seen several photos with Nikon D4 in the exif in the past few months. Some do it for fun, others hope to end up on NikonRumors :)

When stitching images the exif data is from one single image (assuming it isn’t erased to begin with). At least that has been my experience when doing pano’s.

Because I want that histogram and info feature on the actual D4. Everthing else looks nice, but I would pay extra for a screen like that on the back of my camera. Add the LV/ record trigger from the D7000 and that is exactly what I want design wise for the D4.

Goddamn that info panel is pure sex.

63, 40 and a few others have that defect of a side swivel display. I think this may be do to people that have never used their camera outside of auto mode and thus don’t use the fancy buttons.

Hi I did #63, and I did think a lot about the screen covering the button. I do shoot 90% of the time in Manual mode with a D3s, in low-light conditions.

But when you do need the swiveling display, you are not handling the camera the usual way, so maybe you don’t access the buttons that often.

Look at #63 I took the time to make a montage of the D3S with the most recent pro lens, the 14mm f/1.4

Because I thought it would make sense to show the new camera with a recent, cool lens and I do think that most D4 promo shots will be shot with lenses that Nikon wants the pros to buy. Most of them already have 24-70 and 14-24.

    How to make a D4.

    Ingredients and instructions:
    1) Take an image of a D3, D700, or D300
    2) Fire up the good old photoshop
    3) Start messing with #1 and #2
    4) Once you can barely recognize #1 stop! You’re done
    5) Submit to NR Rumors to cause nausea to other Nikon fans

Seriously, I give credit for the try but ….
I can imagine that even the Nikon engineers are shaking their heads.

Just saw a D700 with a ruge discount in one of T.Tanaka(which use to be nikons official until nikon come officially to brazil) revendors, a departament store called FNAC. At the store a body sells around R$13.000 (which is around 8.000USD today) and now is R$8,500 (which is around 5,200USD), which is a pretty unusual discount around here, specially for this kind of dealer.

The D300s was without any discount but few other lens were with discounts such as the 60mm 2.8G, 10-24mm and a few others. but their discount were not liked the D700.

Kind of like the number 18, reminds me the F4!

Thanks everyone. That is what I thought too. I did mention this earlier but the camera is exactly the same size too. Once I started playing with it I realized how much room could be freed up with a little moving around. It is probably just me but I have always felt the record button gets too much space. I also use both a D3 and a D3s and I really don’t like where they added the info button since I always hit it by accident instead of pressing “OK” when switching between the two cameras. If you look closely the battery compartment has also been slightly shifted up to allow space for the multi-selector button.

I am by no means a camera designer but I thought the tweaks are subtle yet functional.
