Nikon achieved top market share in Japan for the first time with the release of the Z5II mirrorless full-frame camera (Nikon has been gaining market share for a while – see previous reports):

“In April, Nikon won the monthly top share for the first time in terms of sales volume of full-frame mirrorless cameras. In this category, Sony has always been at the top. → The Nikon F3 camera is 45 years old – read the whole story here:

“The Nikon F3, which was under commercialization in conjunction with the development of the NASA specifications-based cameras, was released in March 1980 as the flagship electronically controlled aperture-priority AE SLR camera. The body color was black only, and the suggested retail price was 175,000 yen (with 50 mm f/1.4). The exterior of the integrated camera body and motor drive MD-4 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The novel design aiming at a simple form with a concave section on the front of the body for gripping and the impressive red vertical line exerted a large influence on subsequent camera designs.”

The Nikon Zr will be the next Z-mount camera with RED tech (R for RED)

I have been reporting for a while that the next Nikon announcement will be for a cinema camera with Z-mount and RED tech inside. The name of that model is rumored to be “Nikon Zr” or “Nikon ZR” (R for RED). This is what we know so far:

  • Brick-shaped, video-oriented design, without pentaprism and EVF – a combination of the current RED models design, the Sony FX3, and the Nikon Z30
  • Many features and tech from RED will be incorporated inside (not a new RED camera with Z-mount – we already got that)
  • Z6 III sensor inside
  • Very large LCD screen
  • The official announcement is expected later this year, most likely in the third or fourth quarter of 2025
