Lets just hope Sigma doesn’t screw this lens up with its poor quality control. I Really wanted to get this lens…but I’m scared :/

    • Matt

I’d be more concerned for Nikon’s quality control as of late.

      • sucks

Quality control sucks at both Nikon and Tamron/Sigma… I had to send all 3 new Nikor f 2.8 lens for AF- tune-up. And there are brand new. After tune-up, it kicks ass in focus…!

I may be the only one who thinks the 18 instead of 16 will turn off many potential buyers.

    • VikingAesir

You may be. Going down to 16mm would have been great, I doubt anyone would complain about it, but since there is no other lens even close to 18-35 @ F1.8 for people to choose from I don’t think starting at 18mm is going to turn off anyone who was considering it in the first place.

    • Mike

I think you are. Lol. “Uh, dude, it’s a 1.8 zoom”. People will not stay away because it’s 18mm. They’ll flock to it because it’s f/1.8. Zoom.

      • istreetshooter

Obviously, it takes a lot to pry my hands off a Nikon and onto a Sigma, even at f1.8!

  • Morris

    next i hope 300mm 2.8 or 4 prime ‘S'(sport) versus the 300f4VR

    • JamesX

      How about a 200mm F2.0 OS HSM under $2k?

      • rt-photography

we can always dream. shit thats a lot of sand.

        • Kynikos

          Under 4k suits me.

        • boing

          shit sand?

  • Mr Predictable

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a you-know-what to mount it on?

    • FDF

      D3300 ? 😛

I would have liked to see a Dxo comparison of the Sigma with the Nikon 16-35 f/4 rather than a cheap 18-35 Nikon glass.

Interesting use of the 18-35 on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera with use of a speed booster:

An 18-35mm f/1.8 zoom makes a lot of sense on FF. But on APS-C?
    WTF was Sigma thinking?

    • Kynikos

Given the dearth of quality DX primes, I think it’s genius.

    • Maji

it is 27-55/2.8 equiv on FF. What is wrong with that?

      • segfault

It is a 27-52.5/2.8 equiv on a DX sensor.

        I wish it was a 24-70mm equiv. (16-47)

    • Deep_Lurker

I think that Sigma was thinking that lots of DX shooters want 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 30mm, and/or 35mm f1.8 primes – and if they can’t have that, then this zoom makes for a pretty good alternative.

Now I’m a DX shooter who’s not much interested in that focal length range. What I’d like is a 35-70mm f/1.8 DX. I don’t know if such a beast is even physically possible, but it would be nice if it were.

    • J. Dennis Thomas

They were staying within size limits. A full-frame 18-35 f/1.8 would be HUGE. On DX anything wider or with a longer zoom range would also be huge.

I’ve been using one for about a month now and as it is the lens isn’t small. It’s quite big and heavy on a DX camera.

It’s a great lens even with the limited zoom range. It’s not really a great “walk-around” lens, but if you use it for what it is, a special purpose lens, it’s perfect for night shooting or live music.

      • Guest

John Thomas, your perceptions of what’s “big” or “huge” may well be distorted. But I suspect Mrs JT has been telling you that for years.

    • It’s pretty much the perfect lens for nightclub photography where 50mm is generally too close, 35mm 1.8 DX is good, but can be too cramped at times, 12-24mm is too wide and dark. etc.

  • Jacob King

anyone try this on FF yet?

    • J. Dennis Thomas

      Only works at 35mm.

      • Tim

Works down to 24mm 😉 And at the moment its almost the cheapest 35 for Full Frame

  • Jimmy Blue

Waited so long for the Nikon mount that i am no longer interested in buying it.

  • I put my Sigma 18-35mm on my D7100 2 months ago, still haven’t take it off, I love it that much. At first I thought the lack of reach would be an issue, it isn’t.

  • Lars N.

Anyone see comparisons with 18-55 on XE2 (or xpro)? If no d400 on 17th, Fuji will get my cash.

  • Neopulse

    Damn, they took forever :-/
