Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD full frame lens with image stabilization announced

Tamron announced a full frame 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with built-in ultrasonic motor and image stabilization. Price and availability were not revealed.

Update: the price of the lens will be $1,274.00.

VC ( Vibration Compensation)
VC ( Vibration Compensation) is Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron’s VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC system (moving coil method)
Tamron’s original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens’s overall light weight and compact size.

Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the ultrasonic motor
In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

          i liked 35-70, it was also extending, but when beaten to the front, it didnt broked but collapsed.

              If I have to make a choice between optical quality and look, I prefer the image quality.
              Lens manufacturers have to deal with optic physics laws.
              It’s already great to have autofocus, internal focusing, aspherical lens, constant aperture and VR available.

              For that matter physics is not really the problem. One would just have to take in account that the physical length of the lens would increase to achieve internal focus.

              I agree with you. Would love to see an AF-S Nikon with internal zoom & focus and VR II at f2.8 and 77mm filter thread if possible.
              Hopefully a tad better concerning the optics as we have to deal with up to 36 MP soon.

              Agreed, a 35-105mm F/2.8 FX lens (or a 50-135mm F/2.8 FX) would be a perfect complement to the 16-35 VR, while giving the user extend reach the 24-70mm F/2.8 doesn’t have.

              Yes, there is a 24-120m mF/4 FX lens, but it’s F/4 instead of F/2.8, and performance at the tele end is reduced because of the rather ambitious zoom range.

              While a 5x zoom is not ambitious for an amateur-enthusiast product, it is ambitious for an expert-pro zoom. Most pro zoom don’t go far beyond the 3x ratio: 12-24mm F/4 DX, 14-24mm F/2.8, 16-35mm F/4, 17-35mm F/2.8, 17-55mm F/2.8 DX, 24-40mm F/2.8, 70-200mm F/2.8, 80-200mm, and F/2.8, 200-400mm F/4. All these zooms aren’t much more than 3x. The wider the zoom ratio gets pushed, the more image quality gets compromised.

              And as such, a 35-105mm F/2.8 FX would still be a 3x zoom, with less IQ compromises.

              I’d rather do a 50-135mm F/2.8 FX lens, though. The added reach would be welcome (without the bulk of a 70-200mm F/2.8), and the gap between 16-35 and 50-135 can be taken care by making one step foward or one step back.

              Just my two cents.

            • TIM: the problem is that new lenses are not robust enough. One beat on the ground or wall when trying to catch moment and the zooming mechanism was broken.
              Also the hood is too big and screw on hood wont help when it is not internally zooming.

      Not necessarily. Tamron, canon and sigma, all have 17-55 ish f/2.8 lenses with VR for years but still there is no Nikon equivalent lens with VR.
      I am sure that even if Nikon produces 24-70 VR, it will be so big and pricy that still many photographers prefer to have/keep the older version.

          It all depends on what you want to do. For example, I would love to have a 24-70 with VR for photography in cathedrals in Europe where it is relatively dark and tripods are not allowed.

            I agree. There are plenty of situations where VR would be helpful with my 24-70. I’ve seen over and over again how much stabilization helps with my compact cameras, even at short focal lengths.

              Yes, that’s why there is VR in the 16-35, even though this ultrawide to wide zoom is far from being close to the standard to short tele focal lengths, were VR starts to be “more useful”.

              Coming from a Pentax DSLR with built-in SR (Shake Reduction), I can confirm image stabilization can make the difference between success and failure in low light with short focal lengths (even though image stabilization is slightly less efficient with wide angle FL than with telephoto FL). The 1 to 1.5 F-stop advantage I’d get with wide angle was better than nothing, even if it wasn’t as good as the 2.5 to 3 F-stops advantage I would get in telephoto).

              Saying that VR isn’t useful on a 24-70mm because it doesn’t has long enough telephoto reach is like saying VR isn’t useful on a 400mm+ lens because you should use a tripod with such long tele lenses anyways.

              Even a fisheye lens could benefit from VR. It’s just that the benefits of VR would be so marginal on such a lens, it wouldn’t justify the higher price tag.

              So yes, VR can be useful at any focal length, including wide and ultrawide ones. The real issue is in fact is VR useful to you or not and is the higher price okay to you or not.

      Yeah Sigma and Zeiss just don’t get it. For quite a few lenses the killer is having to buy several hundred dollars of their goofy filter sizes. That’s cost them quite a bit from this guy. If it’s not 77 forget it.

      given how Tamron has destroyed it’s 17-50 f2.8 when they added VC, I don’t expect this new lens to be of any interest to those, who consider buying the original nikon/canon version.

          I heard the Nikon 24-70 will use their new SP technology, where the lens comes with its own Shinto priest who calls upon the gods to remove any camera shake, as well as increase the effective existing light by one stop over existing conditions.

    I would be interested in taking a punt at this if they’d only designed it with the hood attachment on the body itself (like Nikon’s 24-70, 17-55).

    OK, so the hood has to be bigger to accommodate the extension of the lens, but it is less susceptible to dust ingress, accidental knocks etc.

    Tamron has been doing very good lenses lately.
    I have a 17-50F2.8 dx, a 90F2.8 Macro (BEST LENS EVER!), and a 70-300F4-5.6VC. All of them gives nikon a run for their money, specially the 17-50.
    I will wait for the tests of this lens (lenstips, photozone, fm, etc), but if i ever switch to fx… this will be my main lens.

    The Nikkor worth every cent …

    Today I would prefer a nikkor 50mm 1.8G than a Tamron or Sigma 24-70 …

    On the other hand, I’m very interested in Tokina’s 70-200 f4. Now there’s a quality lens maker.

    I have the old Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, and it performs magnificently, sharp with creamy smooth bokeh. It’s a little difficult with AF in low-light conditions than an equivalent Nikkor lens but at less than 1/2 the price, you can’t really complain, and with the AF beam from the SB-910 on top of the camera it focuses fine in low light.

    If this 24-70mm f/2.8 VC can deliver similar optical performance with added VC then I may consider getting this!

    I don’t understand this format anyway…. I have the 14-24, 17-35, 50 (1.4), 70-200, 105 Micro, 35 and 24 prime….

    Unless I am a wedding photog, which I am not, why does one even need this ranger.. I’d rather work with a 50 or one of my other lenses… I would never use it, myself, but I know pros who love their 24-70. Different strokes for different folks….

      Simple, you can go from 24mm to 70mm without changing a lens. And the current 24-70/2.8 from Nikon is excellent on those two ranges. If you do arts, you can go with primes. If you do events or journalistic photos, zooming is a must (unless you like changing lens constantly and want to expose your camera to dust and moisture often).

      Something like 75% of my pictures are taken either at 24mm or 70mm. The rest 25% of the pics are taken with 70-200 and ranges vary more. I mainly shoot events.

      So instead of carrying 5 or so lenses, I carry one or two.. and 2.8 is fast enough 99% of the time, if you do not mind using ISO6400 or if you are not bokeh junkie.

    External zoom/focus and 82mm filter size aside, these specs could make this lens best in class.

    Remember, at the end of the day its all about Image Quality. And the extra effort to make a nearly round aperture at 2 stops down from wide open are nice touches to that end. Nice engineering thought leadership.

    Had a 17-50 bim too, and loved the IQ , the lightweight and small size (67mm filter). Construction was very good, even if plasticky.

    Now have a 28-70 2.8 afs which is very good but definitely not lightweight. I would have considered a lighter Tamron alternative.

    But with VC and 82mm filters, this Tamron is almost as heavy and probably just as large…

    Hopefully the price will be nice. I’m thinking to buy a d700 and a 24-70 nikon is too expensive for me. I’m just a hobby photographer and there are not much normal price lenses like this one. Now I have a 17-50 tamron and like it a lot. It’s verry sharp. The only problem is that it’s noisy.

  • Two questions, how good is it optically, and how much does it cost? I presently shoot with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 BIM. If this lens is anywhere near as sharp and around $800 street price, I just might buy one.

    Since Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a steal for the money I believe that the new 24-70/2.8 with stabilization must be definitely a step forward. I see Tamron is improving the quality of its products despite the plasticky look and feel. Also the huge front element requiring a 82mm filter is a clear sign of a superior light transmission quality of this new lens. I am very impatient to test it.

    I love it – not sure about image quality or anything from Tamron, but i like that they offer a fast normal-angle zoom with image stabilization. If Nikon is going for megapixels then image stabilization will be a must to actually use the added resolution .. their existing 24-70mm won’t cut it any longer without VR.

    First Tokina announces a 70-200 f/4 VR, and now Tamron pulls out a 24-70 f/2.8 VC? I’ll definitely wait on reviews but this might finally be a midrange zoom for me to get. (Currently have the Tokina 28-80 f/2.8 but just use primes instead due to its terrible IQ)

  • Two things:
    1) My opinion is mostly positive although I don’t like that much such focal lenght range. I’d have preferred a 28-90 F/2.8 (with the pretence to do later a 90 F/2 lol) or a 28-135 F/4 – 70 is SO short for portraiture !

    2) My copy of 28-75 is very very good. It’s now 6 yrs old and asks to be replaced but it worked a lot and I hope my next standard zoom is at least as good as it was. Actually, I had a 90 macro (replaced with a 100 Zeiss given a little fortune) and I do have ALSO the 70-200 and couldn’t be happier of the three lenses I got from Tamron. Nikon? My only Nikon lens is the 50 F/1.4 actually, plus a 200 F/4 AIS

      a 28-85/90/135 would also avoid such a large filter size….. Actually, it’s the only real “cons” of the lens.

  • Canon 5Dx will be announced February 28, at a price of $2700. Any chance Nikon will take their price down to match or come close? Although, there have been quite a few rumors of them staying below $3k..

    As for the Tamron lens, damn. I JUST got the Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 IF EX DG HSM II. It’s a spectacular lens. If this one performs just as well, I may have to jump ship to have the VC for events.

    Most likely this will be a sharp lens with semidecent build quality and bad AF problems.

    Old screw type 3rd party lenses focused great. These with ultrasonic motors seem to be more or less trial-and-error -type. Eventually, they’ll drive you crazy. I’ll stick with lenses from Nikon.

    VR is a nice addition to the 24-70/2.8, but not really compulsory (what it is in 70-200). Just more moving parts that can go wrong. I can shoot 1/10 handheld at 24mm without major problems, if the ground is steady. So VR is beneficial, but not necessary. If Nikon releases 24-70/2.8 with VR some day, I might consider upgrading, if the price does not go much higher.

    Does the 82mm filter size give any indication of the actual size of the lens elements – also would a larger diameter lens produce better IQ at the edges of the picture as compared to a lens which has a 77mm filter size?

      Using 82mm should allow thicker filters/produce less vignetting at wide end. 77mm @ 24mm adds vignetting quite easily. Should not affect on any other way to the IQ.

  • I really love my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, so I bought the 17-50 f/2.8 with VC and I am disappointed. The VC actually works really well, although its quite different from the Nikon one, but the lack of sharpness at 50mm f2.8 just does not do it for me, so I am thinking to move to the non VC version. Hopefully Tamron did not repeat the mistake, I am looking forward to try out this lens.

  • I like it. This should make it possible for people to upgrade to make the move from DX to FX with a smaller initial investment, as compared to buying a comparable Nikon FX lens such as the Nikkor 24-70 2.8.

  • With the way HD Video is becoming incorporated in new cameras, VR makes very good sense even on wide-angle lenses. A Nikon Rep told me that’s why the new 16-35 has it. So I suspect the next iteration of the 24-70 will too. I for one am all for it!!!

    Hopefully this is just as resistant to axial chromatic aberration as their SP 70-300 – the lack of fringes and purity of color on that lens surprised me (compared to the Nikon equivalent). Look forward to reading tests on this.
