Nikon announcement on Wednesday?

I still have not received a confirmation about the previously rumored Nikon announcement on April 27th, which is very unusual. One of the expected new products is the already leaked Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens. My theory is that Nikon did not plan this announcement, but after the lens was leaked they had to very quickly organize the official release. This explains why nobody knows what exactly is going on. In any case, I will stay late tomorrow night. If there is an announcement on April 27th, all Nikon websites should be updated tomorrow (April 26th) around midnight EST.

  • SWEET cant wait

    • sigh… now your comment will be deleted.

  • I feel sorry for recommending to D3100 and D5000 friends to get a 50/1.8, no AF for them.

Now I can do it guilt free!

  • Mahdi Gransberry

A Nikon announcement wednesday? Happy Birthday to me. I knew the 27th wasn’t a bad day to be born on.

  • now this lens is for me… 😀

  • Trevor

    I’d be thrilled with just the 50 f/1.8 being official, but I also hope for a 24mm f/2 or 85 f/1.8

I know they’re just patents, but here’s hoping 🙂 Thanks Nikon (and Admin)!

  • Thom Rockwell

    17mm PC-E
    50/1.8 AFS
    135/2 AF-S VR
    180 2.8 AF-S VR
    300/4 AF-S VR
    80-400 AF-S VR
    70-200/4 AF-S VR
    Do it Nikon!

    • R R

      nice list! only missing one:

      20mm f2.8 AFS

      • How about 20mm/f2 or faster? I’ve been enjoying my Sigma 20mm/1.8 for a long time, but I’d love to have something weather sealed. It’s quite sad and pathetic that there’s no equivalent lens in anybody’s line–C, N, P, or S.

        • Bigus Dickus

there is, 20 AF-D f2.8, focuses precisely and sigma need to be stopped down anyway to f2.8 to start yield anything usable.

          • Not true, although I can understand where that belief comes from.

My Sigma 20/1.8 is as good as any fast Nikon I’ve used wide open (save the 200/2 which is insanely wonderful). My Sigma broke several times under warranty and one of the times I received it back, it looked extremely soft. I sent it back and they were able to fix the new softness issue.

So, my theory is that the design is very easy to assemble misaligned and their QC isn’t good enough to assure proper assembly. But when it’s assembled properly, it’s a quite marvelous lens, not worthy of any negative comments about IQ wide open.

I’d wager it’s at least as sharp as the AF-D/2.8 at 2.8, if not sharper. And then there’s the option to open it up an additional stop and a third. 1/50th vs 1/20th is a very useful difference. And for what it’s worth, all the exif data insists the lens is f1.7. : D

If my FX body weren’t in El Segundo being fixed, I’d pop off a couple shots wide open as proof.

            • Dug up a couple example shots, but I don’t wanna host em on my server. Flickr doesn’t appear to want to allow me to share at full res. Any ideas?

Admin, would you wanna share a couple full res D700 shots from the Sigma 20/1.8 if I sent em to ya?

            • sure, send me the images

    • Beautiful wishes. I barely wait to see when. 😀

    • bobos

My ultimate wish now is a 8-18 AF-S that blows Sigma 8-16

    • Andrea Leganza

Please Santa, a new improved 80-400 VR, please, Santa!

      • SGN

        Pretty please?
        Sugar on top?

    • No 17 PC-E!!! Please 16 f/5.6 with 77mm filter. 🙂

      And please 70-200 Micro.

  • broxibear

Whatever these lenses are one things for sure…they’re not coming from the Tochigi plant.

  • pooparty

    24 1.8, 35 1.8, and 20 1.8… replace all the old d-series 2.8’s!

  • John

Technically, we’re in EDT, now. Thanks for staying up!

  • AndrewM

    Please… i need d300s repalcement……………………….. announce the d400 tomorrow

    • Same here except I want it, but not need it.

    • I need it too! I’m still using my D100 – and had intended on replacing it with the D300s. Then I found this site, and heard there’d be a D400 sometime this year. 🙂

  • Geebee

A Nikon press release on my birthday! Can I have a lens of choice for free?

    • SDiggity

      Happy Birthday GeeBee!

  • Mock Kenwell

Hmm. If you ask me, the 1.4 is in more dire need of a refresh than the 1.8, even without the AF-S.

    • Are you kidding me? The 50mm ƒ/1.4G came out two and a half years ago. What Nikon needs to do is come out with ƒ/1.2 like Canon has.

      • Agree. 😉

        • Joan

A pro 50mm f/1,4 would also be fine, like the sigma, but then with accurate AF.

          • Your 50/1.4G doesn’t nail focus? Return it! Mine nails focus on every body I’ve put it on: D700, D3, D300, D90, D70, D80, D3x, D200…I haven’t even had to mess with micro adjustments. Can’t say the same for other lenses. Most bodies that aren’t “pro” or “semi” pro don’t like the screw drive lenses.

            And I’m talking wide open.

          • danpe

I have to agree with Micah, return it or send it to Sigma for fixing. Mine is spot on, on all the bodies I’ve tested it with (D50, D90 and D5000).

      • Hari

I read somewhere that 1.2 and autofocus is not possible in F mount.

        • Ronan

@Hari I remember reading something like that too.

          • Don’t believe everything you read.

        • How long will be this myth on air? Nikon HAD various versions of 1.2 (50 and 58 mm) in past.

        • danpe

I’ve seen it too. If you apply the same math on the 200/2 VR it’s also not possible.

      • Bigus Dickus

hm actual 50G f1.4 is POS. we need fast focusing one and wide open usable one.

DX and FX users would scream about it.

        • You’re absolutely right. This crop looks like crap:

…her eyes are about where the edge of an APS-C frame would end.

You’re right–it’s rubbish. Not sharp at all. Horribly unusable lens.

You should just send your 50/1.4G lens to me. I’ll be sure to dispose of it properly, so it won’t trouble you anymore.

          ; D

      • Mock Kenwell

I’ll take a 1.2, but in the meantime, I feel like the 1.4 is lackluster. Bokeh and sharpness at 1.4 are ordinary. The Sigma is a better buy. Nikon shouldn’t get beat at the 50mm focal length.

  • Jologs

I would wish for a nice W/A Prime with the same price/performance as the 35mm 1.8 AF-S DX. At the top would be a 16mm 2.0 AF-S DX.

  • melissa

I was planning on buying a new camera and lens on thursday, so if the 50mm f1.8 is officially announced the day before, i might have to hold off my purchasing until it’s available…

  • Looking forward to tomorrow!
I’m guessing perhaps they’ll announce at least one more thing.

  • broxibear

Canon released their annual figures today.
“Canon Inc slashed its annual outlook to below market expectations as it tries to deal with a quake-hit supply chain that it said was months away from being fixed.
The company said a recovery of the supply chain to levels before last month’s earthquake was not expected until June or July.
Canon slashed its sales target for digital compact cameras for this year to 20 million from 23 million, but kept its sales projections for single-lens reflex cameras — high-end models with interchangeable lenses — at 7 million.
Ricoh is slated to report earnings on Wednesday, while Sony and Nikon are scheduled to post results next month. ”
Canon being a far bigger company than Nikon can absorb a lot of the impact of the earthquake, Nikons’ figures are due on the 12th of May.

    • mikils

Ricoh… Nice memories from youth! What are they producing (and selling well) nowadays?

      • mikils

        I mean, beyond Photocopiers

        • broxibear

          Hi mikils,
Ricoh make the GR, GX and GXR range…up until a few months ago I used a GX200.
Check out Terry Richardson’s diary/blog he uses a GR III a lot aswell as a Panasonic GF1 and D3x.

    • broxibear

P.S. here’s an interesting quote from Canon that has Nikon relevance…
“Besides direct damage to buildings and inventory assets from the Great East Japan Earthquake, we have seen indirect impacts such as a power supply cut, parts shortage and lower personal consumption in Japan,” Canon said.
The company said its business outlook was “extremely uncertain,” noting that its earnings can be seriously affected by parts and electricity supplies.
“The latest consolidated earnings forecasts can fluctuate” heavily depending on future developments, it warned.”

  • The invisible man

We are proud to introduce the new Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8

It’s the same as the Nikkor AF-D 50mm f/1.8 but we sell it for much more $$$$

So we took away the motor, added a usefullness lens element, and put more plastic in the body.
I hope you will enjoy paying more for less, have a nice day.

    • Controversial humor, but it makes sense.

As far as I am not a fan of 50 mm (too tight for all-round and too wide for portraits), I contemplating two 50 mm combo: Zeiss Makro-Planar 50/2 and this newest AF-S 50/1.8 G. Can freely live without ultra-fast aperture (1.4 and even 1.2), but very crazy about IQ. It is cheap, has smooth silky bokeh (as judging on leaked samples), sharp, does focusing on cheapest Nikon cameras. If there will be needed to do portraits of children or women, I’d choose Nikkor. If there will be needed to pay high attention to bokeh, famous Zeiss’s 3-D feel and ultimate resolution, I’d take Makro-Planar. It’s just killer lens. Unfortunately, to this date I have no any. Near future, come close!
