Weekly Nikon related news/links

  • The winners from the last giveaway: Jay A from the US won the Nikon D3s/x book and Bertrand from Belgium won the Nikon D700 book. Congratulations to the winners!
  • TIPA announcements: Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II is the best professional lens and the Nikon D3s is the best professional DSLR.
  • Nikon SB-600 is back in stock almost everywhere (AmazonAdorama at least). The rumor is that a whole container with nearly 24,000 SB-600 flashes got completely destroyed on a ship. Few weeks ago several stores in the US hinted that the SB-600 will be discontinued.

    24,000 SB-600 destroyed. Wow! that’s 1.2 million wattage lost.

    • This is the rumor I got, don’t know if it is true.

nikon rep last night told me “weve got lots of them, you should stop reading too much into nikon rumours” and that was with me not mentioning any rumours site lolz.

        • iamlucky13

The rep can spout whatever claims he wants, but the statement that the flash was out of stock at three of the biggest camera retailers in the US for nearly a month isn’t a rumor. It was pretty easy to verify.

Whether the destroyed container story is true or not is questionable, but it’s certainly not unfathomable. Mazda actually wrote off 5,000 brand new cars a couple years ago because the ship carrying them partially capsized. Most of them had no visible damage, but they chose the insurance payout over risking the liability of selling lemons. Nikon could easily elect the same with a dropped or leaky container.

I wonder what it would be like to trigger 24,000 SB-600’s with one SB-800 all at the same time. I wonder if it could actually blind someone.

    • Anonymous

yes it can I know someone who is blind because of that but with canon flashes ( they worked for canon in the shipping dept. )

  • Me

I wonder how many SB-600s fit into a 40-foot container? Does anyone know how many SB-600s are in a shipping unit?

About the Jalopink link: Its because the people over at Gizmodo and related pages are in love with Canon, and make love to they’re cameras regularly.

  • Nicola

Jalopnik…come on just admit that at the end of the day the D3s saved the job!!!

Can’t see the rumor likely to be anything more than a plausible guess.

Come to that, can’t see a D3x upgrade doing any more for video than the D3s. Those extra pixels are only going to make matters harder for video, not easier.

Would not expect the D3Xs to be called the ‘dee three excess’ either.

Likely this one is in the pipeline but contingent on what they decide to do with the D4. They probably have not fixed a decision on the sensor resolution this far out. If they are going to go for 24MP then I would expect no interim refresh of the D3x and no D700x. If on the other hand they plan the D4 to be an 18MP sensor there would be a continuing place for a D3x.

Nikon has not exactly got a history of big surprises in interim model refreshes. This time round the bodies all got a faster processor, better processing software that allowed the ISO bump out and video. The D300s got dual flash slots. I would not expect anything more of the D700s and D700x if it ever appears.

I can believe a production slot opening up for a new D3x run ready for a launch next month or so. They must have finished with their D3s run for a while. But whether that means a model update is another matter. The D3x likely already has a faster processor than the D3 due to the need to support all those pixels.

    waht is the measuring of a SB-600 packing ? – 24000 in a 40-foot container ? no way.

    • iamlucky13

Target says “Estimated ship dimensions: 6.9 inches length x 4.1 inches width x 3.8 inches height”

That’s 108 in^3. A 40′ container has a volume of about 4.4 million in^3, which leaves room for 40,000 of them if they stack them neatly enough.

      • so I guess it is possible

Ordered another SB600 from Amazon last Friday. It hasn’t shipped yet.

  • Jay

The D3 on the front of the BMW was for stills not video.
