    Hmmm…. the samples at f/1.8 show a somewhat busy bokeh, I can even see double lines. This lens will not earn any bokeh awards, that’s for sure, but it is definitively better than the 35 f/2.
    I am still buying one as soon as it is available in Portugal!
    With my D40, there simply is no other AF’ing low-light option at this price range.

    This looks like it is a very similar deal to the Dx 10.5 vs Fx 16mm. I will bet that the front end of this lens is practically identical to the 50mm f/1.4, only with a slightly smaller lens and the back end is tweaked to concentrate the light onto the DX sensor.

    Net result – two lenses for 1.4 times the design effort. They will sell vastly more copies of this than the 50mm, hence the lower price. Also they will have made this one lighter and so on.

    If you are shooting DX this lens makes perfect sense if you want a normal. I just picked up a 50mm because I was wanting something a little longer for portraits.

    Going forward I predict that we will see the same pattern repeat with the new prime range. The FX version comes out first, followed by a DX version that is a stop slower. Modern zooms are so good that any prime has to offer something a bit more,It has to be fast, offer macro or tilt/shift or be really long.

    If this is simply the 50 mm f/1.4 in drag then why not make it a f/1.4 to boot? I don’t think the cost would really increase from $200 to $900. More likely the issue is weight and wanting to distinguish the budget DX range 35mm prime from a future FX 35mm f/1.4 prime costing $900.

    My guess is that we will see a new 28mm fast prime and probably adding AFS to the 85mm f/1.4 first though. Nikon’s strategy has clearly been to dominate Canon in every part of their range. The lack of fast primes is the only significant place where Canon has a real advantage. A new 28mm f/1.4 would complete a magic three of 24, 50 and 85 mm.

    At that point we will doubtless be hearing that what every pro-shooter needs is a lightweight constant focus f/4 zoom. Somehow I don’t think we will see Nikon try to go there. A variable aperture design is lighter still. If they ever did a lightweight CA zoom it would be a pro-sumer lens for their DX range.

      The AF-S 12-24mm f/4 is the only one on that island, but it has been a while since it was released.

      I use to have it, but upgraded to the AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8 which is in total agreement with your comment regarding the quality of the newer zooms.

        I think the 12-24 is probably overdue a tweak. It is too narrow and too expensive for what it delivers compared to the 14-24.

        It needs to be a 10-18mm for $600 to be relevant to DX shooters. If they have to restrict the range, take it off the narrow end, not the wide.

        I would seriously consider buying a 10-18 DX f/4 if they did the same trick of downsizing the full frame lens. But I somehow suspect that it would still be somewhat pricey.

        Taking the FX lens designs and turning them into compact DX lenses where there is no custom designed DX equivalent makes great sense. The DX line then becomes the lightweight alternative to FX. But I really don’t see many cases where it would really add a great deal. There is no real millage in DX specific designs above 85mm.

        Nikon’s main problem in their lineup is the slow focusing speed of the 80-400 variable aperture and the lack of cheaper long lenses. Why not a 400mm f/4?

        After that it is the return of lenses that were introduced earlier and sold poorly like the 28mm f/1.4 or the zoom micro-nikor which were too expensive to produce in the past.

    I need a prime lens in my arsenal. But the 35mm on a DX doesn’t excite me AT ALL.

    From what we could see on those samples, this new glass is fantastic.
    The only problem with me, and quite a few others that have slightly higher ambitions in photography, is that normal lens do not excite us. First thing I have done when I was starting in photography is that, after a while, I sold my 50mm kit lens and never used something like that again. Normal was to boring for me. On DX I would prefer 16mm or 70mm macro primes, but I think that, for most of holiday shooters, this could be perfect and only lens they will ever really need.

    damn, give these things to people who can actually use them for something.

    • That would be low-light shooters like myself. The 50mm f/1.8 is great, except for the narrow field of view.

      I really do need to call one of the local shops and pre-order, but if Nikon wanted to toss me one to play with, I sure as heck wouldn’t complain.

    Every photo that I have seen taken with this lens has been with a higher end camera body. Robert Cristina said, “The main target is D40/D60/D90 owners.” So when can we expect to see sample photos from one or all of those camera bodies?

    I’m confident this lens is going to be great, but I can’t tell from these images!! I hate to say this, but these images are terrible!! I can’t tell anything from them. I guess I might have to gough up the $200 and use it myself!!

    When is this lens coming out??

    I’m looking forward to this lens, myself. I’m still shooting a crop D2X, as the crop factor lets me carry less glass into the high-impact motorsports events where I do much of my work, but the poor high-ISO performance begs for fast glass, and the 50mm has been slightly too tight for up-close trackside shots. I think this 35 will be perfect for some of the tasks I’m asking out of my gear.
