Otoji - “bigger brother or the older/bigger uncle”

This is a comment to our BIG post from last week. Very cryptic, but again it talks about the first week of September (or maybe March, 2009):
“Under the development is that it is currently having the nick-name Otoji for reference and almost prepared for releasing it to the world for happy result! Wish to say more but the job loss threat is strong, better be the silent voice till 03/09. Sorry…
If you don’t comprehend.. Otoji is like bigger brother or the older/bigger uncle.
Key is bigger.”

It is hard for me to believe that Nikon will have two announcements one week apart.
I could not get any more info from that reader, but hopefully with this post we will light the fire.

It seems clear from the overall context that Sendai0289/4 is speaking about March of 2009 for the official announcement of this BIG thing from Nikon. My guess at this point in time would be that Nikon may be developing a medium format digital camera of some kind since it is clearly geared towards wedding & portrait photographers. Nikon does (did?) make some great lenses for medium format and large format and may want to help market such glass by providing a medium format digital camera body.

I think something will be announced Sept 3rd as well. If they figured out video for the mid range, they’ll put it in the big “uncle”. I could see Nikon releasing a new D3x with HD video, Canon is rumored to have video as well on the Mark II 5D which may come out soon. We’ll see next Wed at midnight eastern time.

I also think, that something is coming out on the 3rd of Sept. We know for a long that Nikon has scheduled a press conference that day. Probably it’s gonna be D3x with 24Mpx - at lease hope so, as this could bring the price of D3 below $4k.

I doubt that a D3x would bring the price of the D3 to such a low, as that would be seriously undercutting the D700 in terms of saleability (unless they drop the price of the D700, which would be great). If anything, if the D3x has a 24Mpx full-frame sensor as is rumored, then it would no doubt be geared more toward studio work, rather than sports/news like the D3. It would seem more logical that it would appeal to a completely different market.

I desperately want to tell you something, but I must not tell you anything. So, I tell you something you don’t understand. Hurray!

03/09 should be March 09. What could wedding photographers need which is out of interest for all other kind of photographers? With other words, why doesn’t launch Nikon the new stuff on PMA 09, one month earlier? Well, the product could not yet be ready at that time? On the other hand, D3 was launched in 08/07, while first customer shipment was in 12/07, four months after. Is it a six months ban? Does Nikon have to wait six months after Sony’s launch before they can use the 24 MP sensor. If so, the big brother could D3x/D4.

Meanwhile I am waiting for a statement on the future of D3. Nikon offered a hardware upgrade for already sold D3s: more memory, new firmware, but this offer is limited for a period of time. What will happen to newly manufactured D3s? Will they get this additional memory, too? Is D3 still in production? Will we see an upgrade, a mark II with more memory, maybe even with additional feature? Some more pixels?

Do you know of any new lenses to be released in 2008?

Dear Sensai-san, this hint is more helpful.

What do wedding photographers might need?
    - To optimize skin colour. Ok, that’s software.
    - To cover large dynamic. The bride wears white, the bridegroom wears black. Many other photographers need this as well, me too.
    - A waist-level finder which also works in portrait mode.

I do not believe the wedding photographers need the high resolution that only mid-range systems can provide (50+ MP). I imagine a cubic shape body with interchangeable viewfinders on the top and a rotating sensor (portrait mode/landscape mode), but still based on a 36 × 24 mm² sensor size and made for the usual Nikkor lenses.

    Cheers to viral marketing.

Older brother (or sister, all cameras are feminine to me)… is anything older than a Rangefinder?….

    Posted August 28, 2008 at 2:23 pm | Permalink

Oh yes. The first cameras were equipped with a focusing screen. Nowadays we call it LiveView.

What a about an electronically waist-level finder. A 3″ LCD display on top of the camera? There is already some gossip about a modular camera from Nikon. Think about it. Which modules might be possible? a finder? a display? a hand grip?

I’m Japanese. I speak Japanese. “Otoji” doesn’t mean anything in Japanese and if you click the link it leads to nothing in Wikipedia.

I suspect that the original “rumor” was made up by someone who might know a little Japanese, but doesn’t really have a firm command of it. IOW this whole rumor is probably a figment of someone’s imagination.

The big brother will be the D3x, with a bigger sensor AND video capability. Full frame SLR video, a Nikon first!

I assume you are right. Spreading rumors should help that “more people to be so curios and buy the Nikon so my job gets more longer”. I don’t think so, That’s why I still consider it as a piece of a viral marketing campaign. Now you say that Sendai isn’t even a Japanese native speaker.

Beside Sendai’s statements there is still the fact that WPPI and Nikon have pre-announced something “Big” six months in advance. This is quite unusual. It has to be a product as the ad says “what WPPI and Nikon have in store for Feb 09”. It could be a piece of software (Nikon Capture NX 2, special issue for wedding photographers) or a piece of hardware. If it will be hardware, it could be either the D3x/D4 or the modular cam. There has been gossip about both models.

Worst case: in February, WPPI and Nikon will not have anything else in store than the tickets for the March event.
