Lion behavior for photographers

LION BEHAVIOR FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

 by Christiaan Winterbach May 2020

I am a wildlife biologist that has worked for 25 years in northern Botswana, mostly in and around the Okavango Delta. My focus has been on counting large carnivores, especially lions. Sharing a passion for carnivores and photography, I have spent more time with lions than most people.

Introduction

Going on a once in a lifetime safari, you don’t want to lose key photographic opportunities. The advantages that professional wildlife photographers have over a first-time visitor, are local knowledge and an understanding of the animals. Knowing where to find animals and when they are going to do something improves your chances to get that special photo. A good guide will go a long way in providing local knowledge. I hope this will help you with some basic understanding of lions and not to miss the shot! Leopard tail

People associate lions with the African savannah, but they use from the deserts to the edge of tropical forests, and everything in between. Lions are social cats, living in prides consisting of related females and their offspring. Prides frequently spend time apart in sub-groups.

New males will take over as pride males from time to time. The coalition of pride males mostly consists of 1 to 3 males. The males are dominant over the females and aggression is a normal part of lion social interaction.

New Nikon interview: “we plan to move faster on our lens roadmap for Nikon Z”

Phototrend published a new interview with Nikon – here are the highlights:

  • Nikon will continue to promote both F-mount and Z-mount systems.
  • DSLRs still have the upper hand over hybrid cameras in sports and press photography.
  • Nikon plans to expand our entire Z-mount system, including the lens range.
  • Nikon will meet the needs of hybrid photographers who take not only still images, but also video.
  • DX-format (APS-C) hybrid cameras are an important category for providing a portal for amateur photographers.
  • Nikon plans to move faster on the scheduled Z mount lenses.
  • The demand for a faster release of the f/2.8 trinity is particularly strong.
  • A lot of demand for pancake type lenses for Z-mount.
  • Nikon will continue to make improvements to the Z system through firmware updates.
  • D6 was developed primarily for sports and press photographers.

Capture One rumored to release a new dedicated version for Nikon users

I received a tip that Capture One is rumored to release a new dedicated version for Nikon users (similar to what they have done for Sony and Fuji users):

The new Capture One for Nikon will bring all the power of Capture One to dedicated Nikon users at a reduced price point, including tailored profiles for supported Nikon cameras. Unlike other RAW processors, Capture One’s camera profiles are uniquely developed for each specific camera model, a process that requires the use of the camera in and out of a controlled lab in Copenhagen, where a team of specialists engage each new model in various scenarios. They then evaluate all the performance parameters such as color, sharpness, and noise across hundreds of images and uses that data to deliver a truly tailored profile, which ultimately provides the best post-processing experience. Capture One for Nikon, like the Pro version, brings this level of support for Nikon cameras, including their latest cameras like the Z6, Z7, and D6.

What do you think? Is it time to drop Adobe? Capture One still provides standalone versions of their products.
