The Nikon D7200 will be officially announced in the next few weeks, most likely before March 13, 2015. These are the only set of rumored specifications I received back in December:
- New 24MP APS-C sensor
- Nikon D750 styled body with a tilting screen
- Expeed 4 processor
- MultiCAM 3500DX2 autofocus system
- 51 AF points
- Built-in Wi-Fi
- 6fps
- Buffer: 16 RAW+JPG
- Video: 1080p @60 and 720p @120 (not sure about 4k)
- Video aperture will be adjustable during live view

The website mobile01 recently visited Nikon’s headquarter in Tokyo, Japan and asked about a new flagship DX or a professional level DX model. Nikon’s response was that they will release a competitor to the Canon 7D Mark II:
Q6: Currently Nikon DX series SLR cameras seem to focus on entry-level, I do not know there is no plan to launch Nikon’s flagship DX or professional-level models do?

The interview (summarized and excludes selected “no comments now” Q&A): Q: Introduction of touch-screen (in D5500) is much slower than competitors. A: We were evaluating it for D5300. However there was a bigger demand for WiFi and GPS at that time, so those made it in the D5300. Q: Then why was the GPS removed from D5500? (Good question, this) A: We tried to put it in, but the GPS module would make the body larger. The goal is to make the body even smaller and lighter, so we removed it. There were other changes that reduced weight and size. We had 3 separate motors to control aper ture, mirror and shutter. This was reduced to just one in the D5500. Motherboard was also changed. Q: The D5500 seemed to have better processing than it’s predecessor and has a touch-screen. How did you increase the battery stamina (D5500 CIPA is markedly improved with the same battery)? A: Actually the power-draw of the touch-screen is not as high as one would think. Improvements with the motherboard/circuit design contributed a lot to improving power efficiency. Q: Your DX-line appears to be targeted at entry-level users. Any chance of a DX-flagship? A: There will be something in the class of our competitor’s 7D2 in the future. Q: Any chance all your future DSLRs will get the flip screen since the D750 got it? A: This depends on market feedback. ATM the feedback is largely positive. Q: Why did you choose 300mm for the new PF design? Possibilities for it to be in all future telephoto Nikkors? A: The price would be much higher if it was in the 400-600mm range. 300mm gave a good price that is attractive to most people, and that is within a more often-used focal length among telephotos. We will evaluate responses to the 300mm and decide if PF will be included in longer telephotos. Q: Why did you not consider putting PF in the popular “big 3” lenses? A: We experimented with them, but the weight and size savings was not as large as we would like for a fixed aperture zoom. The size/weight savings in a prime such as the 300mm f/4 is significantly higher. Q: Why did you release the 300mm f/4 at this time? There was no significant FX camera announcement and it isn’t Olympics period. A: Well we just happened to finish the design of it! Anyway the previous 300mm f/4 is 14 years old, time for a refresh. Q: The Nikon 1 lens range isn’t complete yet and there is a lack of fast aperture choices. What are your plans to compete against other mirrorless bodies? A: ATM market feedback indicates a strong demand for telephoto lenses for the 1 series. So the Nikon 1 70-300mm was released to give users a reach near 800mm in a small package. ATM we have 3 goals: Make the telephotos even smaller, make the body smaller, increase focus speed. Q: Any new Coolpix A? Any plans to respond to Canon and Sony’s 1-inch sensor fixed-lens compact cameras? A: Sony’s 1-inch CSC is definitely very successful. We will have a competing product in the future. |
