Done deal: multiple press events scheduled in Europe for August 19th, 2010

nikon press event august 2010 Done deal: multiple press events scheduled in Europe for August 19th, 2010What I reported back in July, now has a probability of 99%: Nikon has scheduled multiple press events across Europe for August 19th, 2010.

I am still a bit puzzled about the Coolpix cameras announcement that is suppose to be on August 17th, 2010. In the past, Nikon aways announced the p&s line one week before or after the DSLR products. Maybe this time they are trying to combine both announcements in one press event.

The big question, to which I don't have an answer yet, is whether the Nikon D90 replacement will be announced on that date as well.

haha, thanks Jivee, your reply really made me laugh

my most wanted lens is 70-200 f4, but to be realistic, i dont think it will be released this year, hopefully next year.

two months ago, i was very determined that i will move on to FX as soon as D700 replacement comes out. But if Nikon can really significantly improve the ISO performance and dynamic rang in D95 or whatever name, i will probably stay in DX. As a hobbiest, i wanna balance the performance and weight. I currently own D90, I love it, so will not upgrade to the coming DX camera, but the new release will give me some indicator about the future potential of DX, and make decide whether i will need to upgrade to FX.

Not to burst your bubble, but eh 70-200/4 just ain’t happenin. I wouldn’t say never, but…don’t hold your breath either.

My guess is that we’ll see the D90 replacement at Photokina 2010 and no D700s before 2011. Hopefully there will also be a few new lenses …

I’ve done the D80 to D90 upgrade after owning a 2nd hand D80 for 6 months. The difference was MUCH appreciated! I sold the D80 for as much as paid, didn’t loose a cent, plus D90 price had dropped, so no brainer really.

But I did shoot with 2 bodies for 2 months, and it was a pleasure instead if swapping lenses. So, I’m hoping for a MUCH improved D95 (like D90 was to D80). Cleaner jpeg ISO800 – 1600 would do it for me. Just a stop better noise handling is all I ask, so my 12-24 f4 becomes more usable.

I have 10.5 f2.8 fisheye, and a sharp 28-75 f2.8 tamron, as wel as 35 f1.8 and 50 f1.4 afs primes, so although theres overlap, nothing there overlaps the 12-24, but its my slowest lens. And don’t suggest the 14-24 f2.8. Thats as much as a new body, and as stated, I prefer shooting with 2 bodies.

70-200mm f/4 is the lens I’m waiting for too. I will buy it the day it is released (if that ever happens.) I rented the 70-200mm f/2.8. Great lens, but it’s so heavy. I would use it for studio work, so I just don’t need the extra stop, for the the extra 1.5 to 2 pounds it adds. Also, the cost is sky high.

f4 on DX would be equiv f6.3 on FX.
What you really need is at least 70-200mm f/2.8 DX lens.

              Posted August 5, 2010 at 12:03 am | Permalink

Actually Jimmy, the effective aperture does. If you calculate the effective focal length over the aperture, a DX lens loses one stop on an FX lens, just like a teleconverter does.

Working with effective aperture would be a pain so we figure the adjustment factor into the ISO number instead.

But the troll has the figures back to front for making that argument. FX lenses have larger effective apertures than DX lenses as less of the light entering the front element is wasted.

            • Posted August 5, 2010 at 5:06 am | Permalink

beside the fact that you need to stay at bigger distance to frame same, so DOF decreases even more. On DX you need every stop you can make and for IQ alone, usually upgrade to FX makes MUCH bigger step then hunting for perfect lens for DX crops

              Posted August 5, 2010 at 6:56 am | Permalink

People are mixing DOF issues (which are real) with light thru lenses. f/4 is f/4, meaning ration between FL and diameter. That determines the amount of light that reaches the sensor per unit of area, which does not depend on size of sensor.

I don’t know. What is it with Nippon Kōgaku? I’d really appreciate it if they stopped announcing one DSLR after another and got their lens lineup right first! The cameras are all up to date already – there is nothing Nikon could do to make them better (except for the price).

What is it with people calling them Nippon Kōgaku? They’re Nikon, and have been since 1988. If you think it makes you sound like you’re older and more experienced, go ahead and think that. But to everyone else you’re just old, grump, refusing to change, and making things weird. Do you have a TV made by “Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K.” and use “BackRub” to do your searches?

    I’m hoping for a D3100 intro, D90 replacement and D700 replacement announcement.

My D80 is getting a little long in the tooth and hoping to get a deal on a low mileage D90 or a D300/D300s ( from people looking to finally jump to FX with either the 700 replacement or a used 700).

And so far the rumors on the 3100 make it look like a nice intro dSLR I can recommend to people so I have someone to pass my older gear along to.

once the d95 is released, I bet camera body envy will take over – and you’ll no longer want to upgrade to even a D300s. you’ll inevitably shell out $12000 and get the D95 due to the years of inadequacy you felt with each click of your D80. you’ll stand like a champion once more, your D95 held high. You’ll vow never to sink to such outdated technology again.

…then the D400 will be released. followed by the D4. Once again, you’ll hang your head in shame.

The problem is that besides a plastic crap D3100 we have clue about what is coming from Nikon. I think it will be iterations of the hard work of sony sensors. For sure, the last 2 yrs Nikon did not file any patents that covered sensor tech. So we know Nikon will add a 14MP D3100 and a 16MP D90s. And BTW it will be D90s.

    • Posted August 4, 2010 at 12:38 pm | Permalink

It’s called the Sigma 20/1.8 and no, unfortunately, nobody else is makin one. It’s the fastest and widest you get all at once. 2.8 is only a stop and a third away, so you probably won’t see anything as fast that wide anytime soon.

having a series of smaller f/4 zoom lenses that overlap is very convenient for us landscape shooters. Less weight and the overlap in range means I might be changing lenses less.

The 24-120 f/4 (or will it be a 24-105?) would be a great all-purpose walk-around lens, complimenting the 16-35 f/4. But I’m admittedly not very excited about a 70-200 f/4 as we already have the 70-300mm VR which is a pretty descent walkaround tele (at least for my uses).

      +1.

I understand weight and size is an issue for some. I know I’d happily carry less glass if I could get similar results.

But we just don’t need 4 similar versions of same focal length lenses like Canons 70-200 brigade (both IS & NON IS versions in f2.8 and f4). Just do one and get it right!

    • Roger

I dont understand why people say they want 24-120/4VR and 70-200/4VR because of their “smaller” size? Those lenses will be H U G E, just like 16-35VR.

That’s like saying “I want a smaller car” and then you go out and buy a SUV.

Nikon sure are running a tight ship. Few real leaks. And let’s face it, they have labour unrest in their Thai plant and some serious issues at their Chinese plant. It wouldn’t take a lot to get some real leaks coming out of those factories.

And when we do see leaks, they seem to be planted by the marketing department. More last year than this year. Although, I still remember that photo of the D4. Very convincing.

It’s an interesting approach when you compare it to the Blackberry Torch and BB OS6 release, which was full of “leaks” in the form of specs, pics and even videos in the months leading up to the release, which really built excitement amongst the early adopters. It’s not like Canon does not know what Nikon is up to. You would think they would have a planned “leak” schedule, staging incremental “leaks.”

To Zupl : I think the D90 is one of the best working cameras I ever bought. I love the 18-105VR…..but then over time started using the 18-200VR on mine. That freed my bigger Nikon DSLRs for bigger lenses. The D90 replacement is what MANY are waiting for and hoping that serves notice on higher level Nikon DSLRs!

Admin I have a question, last time you posted that the 4 lenses are what’s going to happen. Have you ever been wrong? I think the 35mm 1.4 is imminent. But you are absolutely sure that the 4 lenses you posted are going to be coming up?? Could one of the 4 be wrong and 1 of them be 35mm 1.4?

Most likely the D95 is going to be announced too.

Not so, the D700 was a big name change. It should have been called FX100, since it’s basically a digital F100. They have run out of names for the Dxx lines, now D3100? What about DXn00 for the D300 line and DXn0 for the lower ones?

        It’d make more sense.

I am looking forward to a 24-120 F4 for my D300s. I need a good walk around zoom better than my 18-200 and because my 70-200 is too heavy and lacks the near wide range. Also, I want the G12 Killer providing it shoots RAW – hope it includes GPS.

    • Posted August 5, 2010 at 3:44 am | Permalink

24-120mm better suits FF. Why don’t you try the 16-85mm?

      • CdSharp
        Posted August 5, 2010 at 6:45 am | Permalink

I am strongly considering the 24-120 F4 only because I expect to move to FF in years to come. I know good glass has a longer life that camera bodies so I am willing to pay extra $$$ for best glass. Of course my plan may change if the 24-120 is only an average performer. Is so, the a 24-70 will be the solution.

        • rhlpetrus
          Posted August 5, 2010 at 7:16 am | Permalink

It makes sense if you plan to move to FF later, but 24mm at low end is not wide enough for DX. I shoot WA most of the time, and plan to move up to FF later. Maybe I’ll also get the 24-120 f/4 when it comes, but I have the 12-24mm for my WA shooting, great lens.

          • Posted August 5, 2010 at 8:20 am | Permalink

Yes, 24-120 for a good all around lens but I may also buy a 17-35 F2.8 for wide. Still I also want a 300mm F4 VR. choices, choices and choices. So, what ever the best glass Nikon has at the end of the month, but good glass for walk around is a must have.

A Nikon EVIL with a FE/FM type body and build would be nice.

    • Zoetmb
      Posted August 5, 2010 at 12:39 am | Permalink

The whole point of an EVIL camera is to NOT be as large and bulky as an SLR. What you’re asking for makes no sense. It it doesn’t have a prism, it won’t look like an EM or whatever. And if it does, then it won’t be an EVIL.

And in the end, we don’t really want an EVIL. What we want is a smaller, lighter camera but with a large sensor. Back in the 1970s, Olympus did the equivalent of this with the OM-1. We need to see the same approach taken with a DSLR.

        Posted August 5, 2010 at 3:06 am | Permalink

MR. Ultimate warrior, please calm down. Nikon EM/FE/Fm are all small enough for me. If you need a smaller camera to fit your tiny hands, then I understand.

Since when did I say EVIL cam has a prism for the view finder? EVIL only means Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens. If the body has a bump on the top, does makes it un-EVIL? can’t you have a non-TTL OVF in place of a prism? why am I wasting my time replying to you?

I guess you’re disparaging people with small hands…? I actually need a smaller camera to fit into my hot air balloon for when I go on trips around the world with at least 3 swedish supermodels and the only thing we do is practice making babies. maybe you need a bigger camera, to have a bigger bag, so you can look important?

mmmmmm, just thinking out loud here, if Nikon comes out with a D95 with around 14 to 16 megapixels, and its price floats around 1,000 usd, I think it will eat some of the market of other Nikon cameras like the D300s and D700 , wont it? I know megapixels are not the ¨thing¨, but… some clients and some photographers do think they are and megapixels often become an important characteristic in buying a camera.

So it would make sense to have a new 16 meg D95 out, but also at the same time a D700x or D800 with also 16 or more megs, wont it? mmmm…

    just thinking out loud…

    • rhlpetrus
      Posted August 5, 2010 at 7:19 am | Permalink

Yes, me thinks same re D300s, not D700 though, very different market. That’s why a D400 is more likely than a D90+ (still think D95 name unlikely).

  45. Rafael
    Posted August 4, 2010 at 8:51 pm | Permalink

It may even me shocking to Nikon, if they release a D95 with 16 megs, to see how megapixels do determine peoples minds on selecting a camera, maybe thats what it takes, for Nikon to learn and produce a larger megapixel count FF camera that doesnt have an out of this world price.

mmmm.. I dont know , I have a D3x , yes I paid for it, but I would love to see a Nikon FF camera that is not so expensive. Maybe trade my D700 for the new one with 16 megs or more and video perhaps? man .. my fingers are crossed.. but in the mean while Im getting that new 85 f1.4 G AFS lens if it comes out .. oh yeah baby!

At our local Costco today, they had a huge stack of Nikon D90′s with 2 lens Kits. Our local stores usually only sell beginner level DSLR’s, so something is up.

Costco often buys out remaining warehouse inventory when a model changeover occurs. Unfortunately, they do not always have killer prices, I think the price was in the $1700 – $1800 range.

aside from the insanity that they’d be using canon’s sensor,

These new cameras have to compete with canon’s NEW generation of cameras – not their old ones. They’ll have to be significantly innovative by modern standards.

I can’t see a D400 at 16MP. I think it will be at least 18 and more likely be 24. And I think it will be quite considerably more expensive.

Looks to me that by adding the metal body, the D95 is Nikons first true ‘prosumer’ camera in that it is a professional style camera that is really targeted at consumers. The D300 and D700 are both designated ‘professional’ and there are rather more professionals carrying them than D3 series bodies.

The way we will find out is if there is a D700 replacement with an 18MP sensor. If that happens it will be a pretty sure tell that the D4/D400 generation are 24 MP.

The metal body on the D95 may be significant in itself. I continue to be skeptical of the viability of a plastic body FX camera. The cost of the plastic body is not really a major cost factor compared to the sensor. And looking at the weight of the lenses I would want to use to make use of FX, I don’t really want a D3000 sized body anyway.

The D3s sensor might make it into a D95 series body. The lower priced f/4 lenses makes that possible. But I still don’t think it be the time yet.
