1That 85mm tat isn’t too bad, but the D3x tattoo is TERRIBLE! What a sap!

It is indeed so sad that tech companies such as Nikon are sitting on their butt. I wonder whether somebody gave them the right calendar….but as it appears Nikon does not care much that a huge segment is undersrved for this holiday season.

I like the shots from the 70-200 VRII. Theyre very well taken.

The chromatic aberration seems pretty minimal, too, at least when compared to other DX lenses.

The D3s as well as the 70-200/2.8 shots look really quite nice. Both seem to be an improvement. However, in one of the shots the background highlights with the 70-200 did only blur into circles in the middle of the frame, at the edge they blurred more into…. cutoff circles, like 3/4 of a full moon – is this just normal?

    • Posted October 26, 2009 at 12:17 pm | Permalink

The irregular bokeh circles occur when something in front of the lens is partially obstructing a light source in the background.

For illustration purposes, let’s assume those bright circles are out of focus reflections on water. There is probably a tree, branch, or some other obstruction very close to the camera which is blocking part of the small reflections, and hence only part of the reflection is visible to the front element. The irregular shape of the bokeh on the right side of the frame gives you an hint of what is blocking the view.

You can actually shape bokeh just this way. If you obstruct parts the front of the lens with a distinct shape, then that shape will project itself in your bokeh. Go here for an example of what I’m talking about:

What caught my eye is that the bokeh appears to be pretty neutral, even slightly poor (edges of out-of-focus features are brighter than centers…the ideal is the other way around so that edges fade gradually).

If the background is far enough away or low enough contrast, especially at F/2.8 all the blur will overlap so much you won’t notice it, but on a couple of the sample images the inverted airy discs are pretty clear, and not much if at all better than my 70-300.

From a couple samples I’ve found from the prior 70-200 VR, however, it doesn’t appear that the VRII version is notably worse.

NR Admin – do you have a larger version of the D3s cut in half to share? I’d love to see it.

I was there it was a good show and the D3s was the best in show in my opinion . The noise handling was insane even at 12,000 iso you couldn’t see any noise and don’t get me started on the AF . Before I even had an idea of what I wanted to focus on the D3s was already there. Now to be fair I went to the Canon booth and I can say that they had nothing close to the D3s . Hence why it was so crowed at the nikon booth ,there was so many people that you had to wait about 20 minutes to use the line of D3′s and D3s the same goes for the lenses .

Well, same here in Holland probably, if Nikon decides to keep the booth as small as last year. Lenses were put on a 1x2m big table in a corner, and three people made a crowd already :-P

It annoys me when they know that people are gonna want to try the lenses and yet they only have 1 model of each. They should have like 20 of each lens. It’s not like they can’t afford it, they MAKE the lenses….

I wonder when the rumors on the D90 successor are going to start, there wasn’t anything recently and not even in the (faked) roadmap (http://nikonrumors.com/2009/07/08/nikon-roadmap-leaked.aspx). Is the Dxx line dead?

    D70 Jan.04 D80 Aug.06, D90 Aug.08, ??? Aug.10

Well… probably they start after the D400 is out. And since the D300s just appeared, I guess that we will not see a D400 till well into the next year (probably summer?). Then, give another half a year or so, maybe more, for the D90 successor to appear. That would be end of 2010 / beginning of 2011. Sounds reasonable to me. So why would we have rumors on a camera more than one year before it appears?

no D800 – just had a chat with my camera dealer – he said he cannot sell any D700′s anymore, everyone wants to buy 5D Mk2. You can see the higher resolution very well, and not everyone is taking pictures at ISO 12,800. Nikon is losing lots of customers, upgraders from DX format, most important target group for FF semi-pro bodies like D700. Even D90 can compete with D700.
