Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 rumors will just never stop

This one is coming from Australia (this is an authorized Nikon dealer in Australia):

new nikon 70 200mm f2.8 lens coming Nikon 70 200mm f/2.8 rumors will just never stop

Note the question marks – I am not sure if they are asking us or telling us about this new lens. This could also be a cheap trick to attract attention to their site.

NikonRumors history shows that this same site was dead on with the Nikon D3x announcement last year. Around the same time they also hinted something about a new flash that never materialized.

Maybe they just get their news from NikonRumors :)

What kind of up grades do you want? The only Upgrade I would want is the 24mp sensor.

if they want a lens that complements the 10-24, I suspect the xx-135 VR DX to become 24-135…, but, they also had the 12-24 without a complementing DX lens for this long, though you could count the 24-120 VR as that lens

Silhouette only? Something Sigma-ish about the shape.

Isn’t that the silhouette of the current Nikkor 70-200 VR?

New 70-200 is coming. Most camera shops already know that and some actually confirm it. Just a matter of time.

This is a VERY reputable dealer here in Sydney. I find it hard to believe they would make it up.

ECS is a high end authorised Nikon dealer, there is no way they would make it up. of course its a silhouette of the current lens, they dont have the new one.

Hope this is for real. I really need a 70-200 for my D3. By the way, Australians don’t use the term “down under”. It bugs us. Just say Australia. It has the same number of syllables. :-)

to be fair, down.un.der (3 syls) is easier to say than aus.tra.li.a (4 syls), though most australians i know call it stray.yahr (2 syls) which is clearly the way forward.

Doesn’t bug me when someone calls Australia ‘down under’ lol.

Amusing (especially if it’s with an American accent) but not offensive :P

What about the song from Men At Work?? You can’t be offended by that can you?!?! :D (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew)

No not offensive. Just inane. Men at Work are Aussie’s sending ourselves up. It’s almost always US Media who use the term. We are neither down or under anything. :-)

Given the reputation of this dealer, you should probably put this rumour at about 80-95%. They are in close contact with Nikon Australia and they only really update their website when there is something really worthwhile.

I emailed them; here is what was said…

    Me:

    Hi there,

Your site mentions a new 70-200 possible coming to your site – when is that likely to be available? How much will it be? Can I pay for it now?

    Cheers,
    David.

Well, 2 weeks ago our Nikon rep brought in his father’s 70-200mm f2.8
for us to sell on consignment. What conclusion would you draw from
    this?

    Posted July 27, 2009 at 2:06 am | Permalink

I have bought quite a few cameras / lenses from ECS. They do have close contact with Nikon Australia but it is so typical of Bruce that he never leaks anything out. I noted a week ago they dropped the price of the existing 70-200mm f2.8 VR so they must be trying to clear their stock. Also they have just dropped the price for D300 as well so they must be preparing for the D300s.

It will be interesting to see if they drop the price of D700 in the next month or so. Which maybe a sign of D700s to come.

If you have met Bruce before (I have), you would know what a sly old bastard he is and that he often visits NikonRumors. Go into his store and ask him about the site, and other forums, etc. It’s a cheap tactic to draw attention to ECS.

I myself have been to ECS, & as above it’s a cheap tactic to draw attention to their fairly average prices. People should judge their reputation by their “sales tactics”, which as you can see are pretty much glorified bait & switch. Buyer beware is what I say.
