Additional information on the new lens:

Designed specifically for Nikon Z mount.

This lens features an optical system optimized for the image sensors of mirrorless cameras using the Nikon Z mount. It has a full-frame image circle and can be used with both full-frame (Nikon FX format) and APS-C size (Nikon DX format) mirrorless cameras.

Information communication with the body via electronic contacts

The lens mount is equipped with electronic contacts, enabling electrical communication between the lens and the camera body. The combination of an electrical communication-compatible body and the latest firmware *1 supports Exif information, in-body image stabilization (3-axis), and three types of focus support functions (focusing by changing the color of the focus point frame, focusing by peaking, and focusing by using the magnification button).

Manual focus allows for precise focusing.

The all-metal helicoid unit, machined and adjusted with high precision, and the use of high-quality grease that produces just the right amount of torque, enable smooth focusing operation and allow for precise focus adjustments.

Symmetrical lens configuration

By combining a traditional symmetrical lens configuration with the latest optical glass (ultra-high refractive index glass), a large aperture of F1.4 is achieved in a compact size.

Control the image rendering with the aperture value.

Reproducing the unique rendering of classic lenses, this lens produces a smooth, natural bokeh at wide apertures, creating a sense of depth. When stopped down, it delivers sharp images, allowing for a wide range of expression with just one lens.

Beautiful bokeh thanks to the 10 aperture blades.

A 10-blade aperture is used to create an aperture that is as close to a perfect circle as possible. This results in natural rendering of out-of-focus areas, and point light sources appear as soft, rounded bokeh rather than polygonal shapes.

Main features:

  • Background: Part of the Nokton Classic series sold since 2004; previously available in VM mount and Sony E mount. These are two new variants as reference exhibits.
  • Design and Optics: “Octolender” style (likely “Voigtlander” or classic rendering); intentionally leaves some aberrations for a “tasteful” soft depiction at full aperture (f/1.4), transitioning to a crisp, modern look when stopped down. Creates beautiful, unique images distinct from high-performance lenses.
  • Focusing: Minimum focusing distance of 0.27m (27cm); suitable for a wide range of uses.
  • Electronics: Equipped with electronic contacts for in-camera focus assist functions, including EXIF data recording (transcribed as “childcare recording,” likely a mistranslation of metadata or focus aids).
  • Recommended For: Photographers seeking lenses that produce distinctive, non-standard images.
  • Other Notes: Prototype exhibits; hands-on available at CP+2026. Emphasizes enjoyment of dual rendering characteristics (soft wide-open, sharp stopped down).

Lens specifications:

  • Full-frame image circle
  • Focal length: 35mm
  • Aperture ratio: 1:1.4
  • Minimum aperture: F16
  • Lens construction: 8 elements in 6 groups

Press release:

Cosina Co., Ltd. is releasing the Voigtländer-brand NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4, a full-frame compatible interchangeable lens available for Nikon Z-mount and Canon RF-mount systems.

“NOKTON” is the designation given to Voigtländer lenses with a maximum aperture brighter than F1.5. While large-aperture lenses were originally sought in the 1950s—when the first NOKTON appeared—to enable photography in low-light conditions, the trend today has shifted. With the advent of high-sensitivity image sensors, photographers now seek large-aperture lenses primarily to utilize the significant background blur (bokeh) created by wide apertures as a form of artistic expression.

The NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4 is a compact, large-aperture wide-angle lens that revives the character of classic lenses for the modern era through state-of-the-art optical design. Departing from modern lens concepts that prioritize raw performance metrics, this lens intentionally retains certain optical aberrations to achieve a unique character and beautiful rendering.

It features an 8-element, 6-group optical configuration based on the double-Gauss design—symmetrical around the aperture stop—to faithfully reproduce the distinctive rendering style of classic lenses. At wide-open apertures, the lens produces a natural, smooth bokeh that creates a sense of depth and a soft, delicate image quality; conversely, stopping down the aperture yields the high resolution typical of modern lenses, allowing the photographer to enjoy a variety of rendering characteristics depending on the aperture setting.

The NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4 is compatible with full-frame sensors and is optimized for the respective camera mounts. It offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.27m and is designed exclusively for manual focusing. The lens features an all-metal barrel, and the focus ring utilizes a high-precision helicoid mechanism—lubricated with specialized grease—to provide a silky-smooth operating feel that supports exacting focus adjustments.

Aperture control is mechanical and directly linked to the aperture ring, meaning adjustments are made on the lens itself rather than via the camera’s command dials. The lens features a 10-blade aperture, rendering out-of-focus point light sources with a pleasing, well-defined shape.

It comes with a dedicated metal screw-in lens hood. Equipped with electronic contacts that enable communication between the lens and the camera body, it supports Exif data recording, in-body image stabilization, and various focus-assist functions.
