August 2025 CIPA numbers: shipments are mostly down (except for compacts)

CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their latest camera production data (orange: 2025, black: 2024, blue: 2023):

August 2025 CIPA numbers by ZoetMB
(All comparisons to YTD 2024)
Narrative: August 2025

CIPA has predicted 6.66m ILCs, 1.1.92m compacts and 10.56m lenses for calendar 2025, a modest increase over 2024. We’re currently projecting between 6.6m and 7.2m ILC units. That’s down from last month’s prediction.

August 2025 shipments are mostly down (except for compacts) both compared to July and compared to August 2024.

For the first seven months of 2025, DSLR’s are down 25% in units and 30% in shipped value, Mirrorless units are up 14% in units and 4% in shipped value. Compacts are up 23% in units and 46% in shipped value, lenses for smaller than 35mm sensors are up 9% in units and 15% in shipped value, and lenses for 35mm and larger sensors are down 5% in units and down 8% in shipped value. The lens to body sales ratio has dropped to 1.5 compared to 1.59 a year ago.
