CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their latest camera production data (orange: 2025, black: 2024, blue: 2023):
May 2025 CIPA numbers by ZoetMB
(All comparisons to YTD 2024)
Narrative: May 2025
CIPA has predicted 6.66m ILCs, 1.1.92m compacts and 10.56m lenses for calendar 2025, a modest increase over 2024. We’re currently projecting between 6.38m and 7.65m ILC units. That’s a substantial increase from last month’s prediction of between 5.9m and 7.5m ILC units
May was a great month with everything substantially up compared to earlier months except lenses for full frame sensors.
For the first five months of 2025, DSLR’s are down 17% in units and 20% in shipped value, Mirrorless units are up 22% in units and 13% in shipped value (with the shipped value percentage increase % less than January-April, which means lots of May shipment units were at lower prices), Compacts are up 17% in units and 38% in shipped value, lenses for smaller than 35mm sensors are up 10% in units and 12% in shipped value, and lenses for 35mm and larger sensors are down 2% in units and down 5% in shipped value. However, the lens to body sales ratio has dropped to 1.5.
