The TTArtisan 50 mm f 1.4 lens is quite interesting and unique with its tilt capability available in a range of mounts. While it may not perform as well as conventional 50 mm lenses in terms of sharpness when used as a fixed focal length prime lens for everyday photography, its creative features make it stand out.
The ability of the 2023 updated version tested is now able to tilt by 8 degrees and rotate the lens assembly by 365 degrees (previous rotation was restricted to 90 degrees in one direction), this opens up possibilities for creative effects that are typically found in much more expensive tilt/shift lenses. Although the lens lacks the shift feature, the tilt functionality alone can produce some fascinating images.
One advantage of this lens is its affordability, priced around the $200 US dollar mark. Making it an excellent affordable option for photographers interested in exploring creative photography without breaking the bank. While it may not be the lightest lens weighing in at one pound, it seems to be well-built and capable of withstanding some rough handling.
Due to its unique performance, you might notice a minor loss of sharpness throughout your images, especially around the edges. However, this can actually complement the tilt feature by adding a slightly softer look. If you prioritize pin-sharp images, you may wish to consider higher-end lenses that do however come with a hefty price tag.
Using a tripod for still images is recommended to ensure precise control over the focal plane, especially when shooting handheld, as even the slightest movements can affect the outcome. However, one area where this lens particularly shines is when used for shooting short video with most modern mirror-less or DSLR cameras and a good gimbal. The tilt feature, combined with tripod mounting, allows for experimentation and the creation of unusual effects that can make your videos more visually interesting compared to the usual flat video output.
In summary, considering its price and performance, this TTArtisan lens offers acceptable value. This lens is likely to appeal to photographers interested in creativity, diversity, and unconventional photography and video techniques without the need to invest heavily in a lens that won’t be used every day.
In my opinion It would be great if TTArtisan considers releasing a 20 mm version of this lens in the future, expanding the creative possibilities for amateurs, enthusiasts, and professionals alike who want to explore unique perspectives without a substantial investment.
