Update: see also this Nikon 20mm f/1.8 lens review.
With all of the Photokina stress, I forgot to post this quick hands-on review of the Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G lens sent by a reader:
As I read the first rumors of the 20mm f/1.8 lens I got excited – a new wide angel prime for landscape and long time exposures photography (something that is a problem with the 14-24mm f/2.8 lens because it’s difficult to use the lens with filters). My first 20mm f/1.8 shots were of Fireworks at night – the output from my D800 was fantastic – really sharp and clear. The angle of view is just perfect for this type of photography:
Few days later I went to the local fair for some longtime exposure with a ND64 filter. The 20mm f/1.8 lens is better than the 24-70mm f/2.8 or the 28mm f/1.8 in that regard and it works great with ND filters because it’s possible to get more “movement” in the pictures:
After the first night tests, it was time for some daylight pictures. For that I took the 20mm f/1.8 lens to the mountains:
The trip started at the Langbathseen where I tried some close-ups. I really loved the wide angle aspect in combination with the soft bokeh in the pictures of the leave or the mushrooms. It’s great that you can go so near with this lens.
Shooting against the sun or other light will result in some halos but I like the way the pictures came out:
After the lakes I started to climb up to Brunnkogel and realized that the lens weight is a really big plus when going uphill.
After one weak testing the new lens, I can say that I love using it in almost every situation. More pictures can be found on Facebook at TS Photografie.
