Nikon announces the closure of its activities in Brazil

Last year Nikon Brazil issued a press release announcing that they will no longer sale Nikon equipment in Brazil (Nikon do Brasil Ltda. was established in 2011).

A few days ago Nikon Brazil issued a press release confirming the closure of its activities in Brazil. Nikon will continue to repair photographic products with valid warranties. Out of warranty products will be handled by Nikon USA. If you have any questions, you can send an email to: comunicacao.br@nikon.com.

Here is how a PetaPixel reader describes the situations in Brazil:

“Not only [is the] Brazilian bureaucracy […] extremely horrible for foreign companies, […] but also there’s a huge grey market of not only cameras but all sorts of electronics and other types of products to contend with.

“[T]ax on electronics are around 60% of anything that’s over $50. But the rule is extremely confusing. […] In the end, any end consumer buying imported products in Brazil might have to pay over double the price and wait an extremely long time to actually get what they want.

“The situation is so ridiculous that it’s often cheaper to fly to Miami, purchase a bunch of electronics there, spend the weekend, and fly back… and still pay less than if you bought those products in Brazil. Particularly for expensive gear like cameras.”

Nikon is now shifting focus to Indonesia:

“Nikon is restructuring its sales networks for digital cameras in overseas markets, taking steps including withdrawing from Brazil and shifting focus to factory equipment in Indonesia.

Nikon is also changing tack in Indonesia. When the company set up a sales company there in 2013, the main focus was on digital cameras. But it ended direct sales of cameras this past spring and now just provides support for sales agents. The emphasis is now on is industrial equipment like x-ray inspection systems and contactless 3D measurement systems to meet growing demand in the auto sector.” (Nikkei)
