The current Nikon Coolpix P600 model
In addition to the Coolpix P8000, Nikon is also rumored to announce a new Coolpix P700 compact ultra zoom camera with 1″ Aptina made sensor. Here are the rumored specifications:
The current Nikon Coolpix P600 camera ($446.95) has a 1/2.3″ sensor and 24-1440mm lens equivalent, I am not sure how Nikon will be able to squeeze 24-2000mm lens for a much bigger (1″) sensor. Sony’s RX10 camera ($1,298.00) has 1″ 20.2MP sensor and 24-200mm equivalent f/2.8 Carl Zeiss lens.
If this rumor is true, Nikon is definitely trying to shift to more advanced compact cameras. On several occasions in the past Nikon’s reps mentioned that they are still committed to advanced compact cameras.
