Correction: the EU common charger directive will not impact Nikon DSLR cameras in 2025
Correction to my previous post: the EU common charger directive will not impact Nikon DSLR cameras in 2025.
You can read all the comments posted by readers for the details.
This is what happens when you blindly trust a clickbait title and repost a topic from another website without doing your own research. I am sorry, I should have known better. On the other side, this is a rumor site and nothing should be taken seriously – everything that you read here on NR could be wrong.
Update – here is some commentary from a reader:
- What the EU really wants to achieve: get rid of the millions of proprietory chargers, all 5/12V, which differ only in the proprietory design of the plugs/connections and which (given the often quite short periods of usage) create huge amounts of electronical waste. The EU announced that directive to come already years ago, much longer than the usual model cycle for cameras. With the new directive in force, you could charge your phone/pad/camera/toy/torch/GPS-device/baby-phone and whatsoever with ONE charger and ONE cable.
- No EU directive demands that batteries MUST be charged IN CAMERA (with a USB cable). In fact most photographers I know don‘t. And external chargers with simple mains cables like the ones supplied by Nikon with the D850 are not affected at all.
- Anyway: there are thousands of phone/pad/camera-chargers with USB cables cheaply available on the market. As Nikon do not produce their chargers by themselves, it would be the easiest move just to include a Nikon-branded USB charger instead of a proprietory one.
- Apple also has officially wailed about the evil-minded EU forcing them to equip iphones with USB connections. „Huh huh, the poor iPhone users are used to and have so many lightning cables which they can‘t use anymore, what an environmental disaster, huh huh“. These considerations didn‘t prevent Apple from switching their iPads to USB a few years ago … without huh huh and without being forced by EU.
- If the D850 will be discontinued by Nikon, it will be Nikon‘s marketing decision and nothing else.
- Why am I so angry? Because posts like that (though, in your case, unintended, at least I guess) just add to the thousands of fake news trying to fuel mistrust towards institutions and to destabilize, in this case the EU.
