Will there be a Nikon D850 replacement?

Nikon D850 with the Irix 15mm lens

Up until approximately two years ago, I was getting a consistent stream of rumors about a D850 replacement and then everything stopped when Nikon decided to concentrate on mirrorless (or the Z9 to be exact). This year the Nikon D850 will be almost 5 years old (the D850 was announced back in July 2017) and I do not have any reliable rumors to report about a potential replacement.

I guess everything will depend on how quickly Nikon shooters will switch from DSLR to mirrorless – if Nikon is happy with the numbers, you can forget any future DSLR cameras and lenses to be released. Other issues that are also part of the equation are production limitation and the current part shortages.

My personal opinion, after seeing the record Z9 sales, is that Nikon is done with the DSLR cameras. I do believe we may see one last commemorative DSLR model (maybe in retro design?), but again – those are just my personal guesses. Obviously, the situation with other DSLR cameras and F-mount lenses is very similar.

In the past few months, the D850 has been hard to find in stock. We already had a few temporary Nikon D850 price drops in the past and we may get another one for Presidents Day:

I hope this post will trigger some more tips from sources and a response from Nikon – hopefully outside of their regular “we are monitoring the current market situation and the demand of our customers…
