Nikon released firmware update version 1.02 for the Nikkor AF-S 180-400mm f/4 ED TC VR lens that fixes this autofocus issue:

Fixed an issue that in rare cases slowed autofocus tracking or prevented the camera focusing.

This is the second firmware update for the 180-400mm lens (version 1.01 can be found here).
