October CIPA numbers: the best months so far this year



CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their camera production data for October 2020 (orange: 2020, black: 2019, blue: 2018, click for larger view):







October 2020 CIPA numbers

DSLR units grew by almost 95,000 units as compared to September. Mirrorless units grew by almost 50,000 units. Best month of 2020 so far in every DSLR and Mirrorless category.

Cumulative Mirrorless shipped value is now 235% of DSLR shipped value.

At the current pace, the total ILC bodies in 2020 will be 4.84 to 4.94 million units. It was 8.46 million in 2019, 10.76 million in 2018, and 11.68 million in 2017.

DSLR Units : 1.9m -50% YTD

DSLR Shipped Value: ¥77 billion -48% YTD

Mirrorless Units: 2.2m -30% YTD

Mirrorless Shipped Value: ¥181 billion -21% YTD

Compact Units: 2.88m -50% YTD

Compact Shipped Value: ¥62 billion -44% YTD

Lenses for smaller than 35mm Units: 4.3 million -45% YTD

Lenses for smaller than 35mm Shipped Value: ¥60.9 billion -43% YTD

Lenses for 35mm and larger Units: 2.85 million -31% YTD

Lenses for 35mm and larger Shipped Value: ¥139 billion -31% YTD

Mirrorless unit share (of Mirrorless + DSLR): 53.9% (was 45.2% Jan-Oct 2019)

Mirrorless Shipped Value share: 70.2% (was 60.6% Jan-Oct 2019)

The ratio of lenses shipped to bodies shipped is 1.73 for Jan-Oct 2020. It was 1.70 Jan-Oct 2019
